New Max Payne 3 Trailer & Screen Shots - 02/16

Will be very interesting to see what the press says about how it plays. Hope it feels as good as it looks.

What makes you say that?

Surely people aren't forgetting that deliciously cheesy dialogue is a quintessential part of Max Payne.

Nice. The music so far is fantastic.

I wonder if it's all him, or if he's working with someone. Third straight R* soundtrack for Woody Jackson perhaps?

because it's a game and I haven't played any game with a consistently interesting story but i don't care about that since I don't play games for their story.

I'd say the last game Dan Houser wrote on, Red Dead Redemption had a fantastic story, my favourite of this gen so far. So I think he'll create an amazing story, or if not at least it will have interesting characters like GTA 4.

it had potential in the beginning, but mexico kinda fucked it up.

if i was going to pick someone other than Sam Lake, i think i'd probably go with Dan Houser.

the problems with GTA4 was that his writing didn't fit a character who the player could control the morality of. the writing was pretty good. Max is going to be killing a lot of people no matter what, and i'm sure Dan will craft the storyline accordingly.

this kind of game shouldn't cause the problems that something like GTA4 or RDR pose. he can do it. Bully worked out pretty well and that was a game with less choice for the player to control the morality of their character.

that's kind of surprising that they are demoing the pc version, don't most people show 360? Hopefully that means it performs well unlike GTAIV.

Yeah and I believe they had a demo on all 3 platforms for each respective outlet at their NY and London HQs yesterday. First batch of previews should be going online March 1st at 12pm EST and I can't wait!

It'll be nice to hear some impressions from others that have actually got to grips with the game because that's my only fear is that while everything looks and sounds great, I just hope it plays as good too.

March 1st, damn I came in hoping for new impressions today. Why the extended embargo?

Exactly. Without being tied to the mission-based open world design of their other games, people will hopefully not run into any sort of cognitive dissonance between Max's personality and his actions like they did with Niko.

But beyond that, I've always felt that Dan Houser does great with characters and dialogue. It's why I've never really minded a bit of that dissonance in GTA since everything else is really good. He also knows how to capture an atmosphere quite well.

Right now I'm dying to know what they're going to be doing with fake TV shows. The answer they gave in the Asked & Answered article is practically a guarantee that they're in. Okay, maybe not a guarantee, but I can't think of why they wouldn't just say no if they weren't going to have any. And R* is pretty well-versed when it comes to fake entertainment at this point.

Unfortunately, it just seems like standard practice these days. I was excited about that Xbox 360 spring showcase because Halo 4 is going to be there, but it's embargoed until like March 8th =(

Hmm, I really disliked a lot of things about MP3 when it was first announced, but with each trailer Rockstar has worn me down to the point of just not caring about those original dislikes and has me embracing the excitement.

I'm always down for a tight third person shooter anyways and this looks like it's really gonna deliver on that front.

Not sure without asking a journo but this is common practice and I'd imagine the NDA is part of Rockstar's marketing schedule and the fact that those who played it work for magazine outlets, whose impressions will be in May prints that are usually sent to subscribers the end of Feb-early March and on stands late March.

Another potential mind-blowing but hilarious twist would be
Max running across Jim Bravura who mistakenly retired to South America. The trash talk would presumably be amazing.

Haha that would be awesome! So when is the GAF replay of Max Payne 1 & 2? I just managed to get my copy of Max Payne 1 working for Mac so I'm eager to jump in!

Also the new trailer is already airing on TV here as a commercial. Seeing it makes me think May is closer than it is.

I have yet to download MP1 and MP2 off XBL, but I'll grab it same time as American Nightmare. So I'm in for a Replay. Everyone can bask in the awesomeness of Max Payne once again. If I remember right, it still holds up really well.

I'm totally down for a replay of the first two. I think we should wait till late next month, though. It's a sad thought, but we still have over two whole months until 3 =[

Yeah, I'd say the beginning of April so then that way it's a month before release. Congrats on getting Rockstar to do that contest! Awesome stuff!

Is there any word on Dead Man Walking returning?

It would be epic in co-op

There's a variation of it as an online co-op mode called "Payne Killer". Essentially you and another player, or buddy, play as Max and his partner Passos while the rest of the game lobby take on the roles as gang members with the objective of taking either you as Max out or your partner. Whoever kills Max or Passos then takes on that role.

Yeah I know, but that doesn't really sound anything like Dead Man Walking.

i've been replaying 2 to force myself to spread out Alan Wake PC so i didn't beat it super early before American Nightmare came out. it's been a bit of a PAYNE HAH HAH reminding myself to quicksave (eurgh... so dumb) after every set of enemies.

we really used to like that crap? whatever.

game runs pretty damn nice with a daft level of SSAA now adays. just a shame you can't force the stupid thing to run in widescreen with the right aspect ratio.

Haha, I think there are still some people who are not happy with what Rockstar is doing, they just aren't posting in these recent threads.

Which is fine. Some people are more resistant to change than others.

They really started the hype early for this, had a commercial Friday night on ESPN during the NBA game, telling people to go pre order now.

Not often you see that two and half months early.

Edit- I guess it's 3 months early now that I look at the date.

Yeah even when Rockstar are trying to get all the bases covered for the fans and you've got Remedy giving their input and playing the various builds of the game, people are still going to hate regardless. I mean someone bitched here that the New York level shown in MP3 was too "bright"...

I can only take this as a sign that Rockstar will not delay it again then!

Nice! Lots of good clips there and I just got done watching all the Die Hard movies too. Actually I just got done with Man On Fire last night in preparation for MP3 and I've got to go through my Mann collection too.

Imagine if they got Mann to do a MP3 short like John Hillcoat did for Red Dead..

Some great choices in there. Definitely going to have put on some John Woo soon. Or maybe Elite Squad.

Yeah, I just saw a minute long spot right in the middle of the Lakers game.

R* does not fuck around when it comes to marketing :lol

So, before a game/movie was released, is that the biggest crow-eating fest ever on GAF?
Probably. I remember laughing at the game when they released the first screens of bald Max. And now, I probably wouldn't be half as interested in the game if it weren't for those design change.

I pretty much get anything made by R*. So I'm definitely getting this. Have my special edition already preordered.

Those are some damn great shoot outs they recommend. I hope this game comes close to them. Most shooters aren't nearly as "explosive" as the devs think they are in terms of sound design, environmental effects, particle effects, bullet hit reactions, etc. etc. Maybe this game can show other shooters what they've been missing.

Another new Rockstar article on the high life of Sao Paulo:

Rockstar Research: The Rarefied High Life in Max Payne 3's São Paulo Metropolis

Along with a new image. And other research images on the article.

Fabiana Branco and her sister Giovanna skip the line and arrive in style via helicopter to the exclusive Club Moderno for a night of drinking and dancing, escorted by Max and Passos.

Man, I really love the look of the city. I've never been to São Paulo so I don't know how accurate they're being, but it sure as hell looks believable.

With the research trips that the article talks about, didn't R* have problems getting all of their equipment through customs? I don't know why this came to mind, but I remember reading that somewhere like a year ago.

Can't imagine how many cameras and just general tech that these teams carry around with them when they go out for research. Must be crazy.

Man, I love the 3D renders and how they actually have modeled all the working parts to the weapons and it shows.

So there's like just over 2 months until MP3 hits....

Yeah they hit a snag when trying to get their 3D scanning equipment through customs and spoke about it in Game Informer back in 2009, and I was hoping they'd show the various research after talking about it back then!

Some interesting details there too like Giovanna being Fabiana's sister. Giovanna was mentioned as being Passos' girlfriend and who you escort during the bus depot level, you can also see her and Fabiana being kidnapped and forced into the helicopter. I guess the bus depot won't be the only "rails shooter" moment going by the screenshot of Max in the chopper.

G4TV posted a good interview with Rob Nelson for commentary on the new trailer. A few good bits of information regarding the story:
http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/721115/max-payne-3-trailer-qa-with-rockstar-games-rob-nelson/
What can you tell us about what’s being shown off in the new story trailer? What’s the setup?

This trailer focuses on Max’s personal motivations, while revealing a bit more about the events that trigger the story of Max Payne 3. The bulk of the game takes place in São Paulo where Max is working executive security for Rodrigo Branco, a successful businessman, and his two brothers, Marcelo and Victor - all members of São Paulo's wealthy upper class. When Rodrigo’s beautiful trophy wife, Fabiana is kidnapped while under Max's protection, Max fights to find out who’s behind the kidnapping and in the process, becomes involved in something much larger. São Paulo is a dangerous city and with Favela gangs, paramilitary outfits, and corrupt police forces as potential suspects, it quickly becomes clear that things are much more complicated than they seem, and Max can't be sure who to trust.

On hidden details or things to look for...
On the technical side, viewers may also notice some stylized post-processing effects, both during the in-game footage and the title slides. These effects are carried over into the game itself, and are present in certain moments both in real-time during gameplay and cut-scenes - and in both single and multiplayer.

Who are some of the new characters we’re being introduced to in the new trailer, and what are their connections to Max?

RN: We’re introducing some of the main supporting characters in Max Payne 3 that viewers may have only caught a glimpse of in our previous trailers. The Branco family is comprised of three brothers. Rodrigo, the eldest, is a powerful businessman and real estate mogul. The middle brother, Victor, is a local politician, and the youngest, Marcelo, is a party-loving, euro trash playboy. Rodrigo’s trophy wife, Fabiana Branco, is obviously stunning, and her lavish lifestyle makes it easy for trouble to find her. Max gets connected to the Brancos by Raul Passos, a long forgotten colleague from the NYPD. Passos has convinced Max to leave New York and work as a private security guard for the family, which is an opportunity for Max, who's spent years trying to drown his own memories with booze and painkillers, to try and leave a lot of his problems behind. Since Fabiana is kidnapped on Max’s watch, Max is suddenly forced to re-live the events of his tragic past and so sets about trying to make things right for the Brancos in a way he never could for his own family.

From what we’ve seen so far, MP3 is set over a good chunk of Max’s life. How much, if any, of the events of Max Payne and Max Payne 2 will find their way into MP3? And do any of those events influence Max’s exploits this time around?

RN: Without giving away too much, the game mostly takes place in São Paulo, with events taking place outside the city revealed as Max's memories of the events that got him there. Leaving New York is a great opportunity to leave those things behind, but the same problems he faced in New York quickly find him in São Paulo. Max's past is a shadow that constantly haunts him, wherever he goes.

Hmmm the last part is interesting. I remember the preview in EDGE back last May mentioned that some of the old story threads from the first 2 games would find their way in MP3 but nothing has really been mentioned...until now.

Some great info there. Thanks Simo.

I don't think Max is banging her, I think it's just like Nelson said. Almost a do-over for what happened to his family.

With the mention of flashbacks and the situation being similar to what happened to Max in the first game, I'm betting we'll get some interesting nightmare/hallucination sequences.

Just a reminder, and will probably warrant a new thread, but next Thursday on March 1st at Noon EST is when the hands-on previews will be dropping online from various sites like thesixthaxis.com etc and Rockstar confirmed as much.

Next week is going to be good! Hopefully they'll be some solid, and favorable, impressions.
