It looks really middling, especially for a ps3 game.

well, personally, I think it looks on par with GRAW, which not long ago peolple are heaping praise on.

And its an online only title. You can't expect it to be so jampacked with technology and details such that the file size is 4 gigs or something. I'd imagine the sweet spot for downloadable PSN games is less than 1.5 gigs

For all of the people downplaying the graphics: It's a PSN game.

:lol The haters do not even irritate me anymore, it is always so pathetic that it has moved into the realm of amusing now.

I think it looks pretty damn good for a PSN downloadable, people bitching should go back and play the original S1 and watch your eyes bleed

Socom needs to hurry because true PS3 online gaming does not truly begin for me until Socom is out, Everything else before is just a warmer.

OH shit higher quality screens fucking yeah this game keeps looking better and better hopefully that can be said for the gameplay.

I'm definitely going to pick this up as I don't care too much about a single player mode.

Hope it's not above $30 but I'll buy it anyway.

Amazon has it at $59. Sheesh. I assume that is a bluray release with a wireless headset included for that price.

If this turns out well I'll be I'll be playing this for the whole generation. I thought COD4 and Warhawk would have the same faith, but NOTHING has ever come close to the addiction that is socom for me personally. Can't effin wait :D.

Yes, but they are not going to allow 15GB games. It has to be convenient to download and not space consuming.

I can imagine PSN games are going to be 5 GB, probably the same size as some Xbox 360 retail games.

PSN games looking better than GRAW? Can't fucking wait for this game... never played SOCOM before though!

It's also nice to see a richer colour palette than in the screens that were released last year at the Sony Gamers Day - the game previously had a quite sterile appearance. There's something that reminds me of Resistance in the bombed out building below (maybe you can only do so many things with a ruined brick building, huh?)

SOCOM is a massive "casual" franchise. I use "casual" in the way it was used last-gen; Madden, Gran Turismo, and other franchises that made people who didn't normally play video games play video games.

I think pretty much every SOCOM game except the PSP ones has broke a million, and even those have done in the upper six figures.

Recently a lot of the diehard Sony fans on the forum (Kittonwy especially) have been complaining about the fact that a lot of Sony's awesome IP isn't going to be landing on the console until 2009/2010. I don't necessarily agree, but I do think that it was a massive mistake that the only casual-friendly old IPs hitting the console near launch were sports games. SOCOM should have been there day one.

On the other hand, the game has clearly improved significantly since its initial reveal.

I've realized this since S2. It's SO TRUE; as funny as it may sound to say it. It breaks all the rules of what is considered a "casual game;" and, to be honest, I don't know how it gets away with it! It's just that Socom magic/fairy dust/demonry, I guess. I've met guy who are in their 50's on S2 who ONLY play that game. They run in clans and everything. But, I tell you, what is even more puzzling (and I've been thinking to myself, trying to figure this out over the past day or two) is the number of girls/women who play Socom; AND, THEY'RE USUALLY BADASS AT IT!!!! :lol You find young women and older women playing; all hardcore. What's the draw? I mean, Socom isn't some noobfest.

I bet all those old dudes are still exclusively playing S2 (some on S3 aswell) TO THIS DAY; just waiting for Socom: Confrontation to come out so they can buy a PS3 and that game alone. Oh, and as an added bonus, they get a Blu-Ray porn-box for high-def, next-generation masturbation.

Screens look badass. I cannot believe how many good games are coming out. My wallet is going to be anorexic this year for sure.

It's because, at the beginning of every round, there's like 10 or 15 seconds of safety. For like 10 seconds, any player, no matter how noobish, feels like they might be able to do something...

I'm telling you dude, there's something about the start of each round that keeps you coming back... like if you would've just done that instead, you'd still be alive. So you die, and wait for your next turn. Again and again. Hours pass. Work and wives get put off... more hours pass.

Before you know it... you know all the maps (because you spend so much time dead and watching the good players play them) and you start getting good because you pick up the strategy. Add in the mics (people forget Socom was one of the first console shooters to have mics) and its something totally new and fun for the non hardcore crowd.

It takes total noobs and whips them into shape. I've seen that shit happen man. Like you said... my buddies wife hated games. But she watched him play so much that she eventually picked it up and I swear she got better than he was. She was like a death angel in The Ruins. (Great map btw)

Hilarious.

I might catch some flak for this, but I never liked the way SOCOM controlled. I found the movements stiff. It looks nice but will it play like PS2 SOCOM? :D

Yea, that's true. That time gives them a chance to decide who the want to follow and maybe ask the leaders of the team what the plan is. They have time to grasp the situation. I'm sure that is a big part of it. So, I agree. There is no other multiplayer game that I'M aware of that has such an opening (well, atleast not any other realistic ones). I think that's just great. Love that about Socom.

As for the way women get into Socom; I was thinking along those same lines. Because, usually, when I played with a girl/woman they were playing in a clan with their boyfriend/husband. In most cases, they usually knew some of the other guys on the team in their actual social lives.

And, yes, The Ruins is OSSUM. :D

Would like to know this as well. Does it play like GRAW?

No, GRAW tries to play like SOCOM. And SOCOM plays light-years better than GRAW.

Sorry, this series just isn't "another military shooter", this series is "Thee Military Shooter". GRAW was Ubisofts "wow, let's cash in on that" counter to this, and it no where near played as good.

SOCOM is one the most intense and competitive shooters I've ever played. It's no Respawn-o-rama, but it's not much of a campfest either (unless of course the mode calls for it). And it's as close to realistic behaving as any console shooter ever has been. It also has some of the most fun "game modes" out there like extraction, VIP's, demolition, and they feel done right, not just extras thrown in on top of deathmatch. And the SOCOM community feel-feature sets are absolutely 2nd to none.

Even though this isn't the full-fledged Zipper title, and just a PSN hold over, S6 seems to have taken great care to listen to the fans of the series, trying to bring it back to it's S1/S2 glory, along with maybe taking some of the weapon mods and clan match features of S3 (the main good things about that one).

I can't wait to have a SOCOM that runs and plays as solid and sure like R:FoM and Warhawk with it's dedicated servers... oh man, I just wet myself. And if ANY title screams HOME functionality, like say Warhawks proposed set up, this game is it.

Need info
I'm still curious about these gameplay adjustments...Gameplay was great in the first one, then just started in a downwards spiral of ****ness. and expanding the levels to 32 has me worried since Socom sucks so far at 32.

Man... how do I answer this.

GRAW is more like Socom than the classic Ghost Recon games. What Red Storm Entertainment did with GRAW was try to make Socom. Unfortunately, they never really figured out what was so good about Socom and in the process they ruined everything that was great about Ghost Recon.

GRAW is a fucking abortion.

Geeze... I don't think I answered your question. Oh yeah... comparing GRAW's horribly crippled "I-love-to-wait-15mins-for-a-match-just-to-be-booted-at-the-round-start" online interface to Socom's nearly-perfect lobby system is another example of epic Ubisoft failure.

Hey, but that's just one guy's opinion.

I, for one, will happily buy both games. Because, at the very least, ONE of them is bound to be perfect. But, most likely, they will each tailor to our different desires for a Socom game. Maybe Zipper will keep going in the direction of S3 for people who may have enjoyed it but felt they could have done a better job of tightening/focusing the combat. Slant 6 is obviously creating Confrontation for us hardcore S2 players. It's a WIN/WIN, man! :D

S&D in CoD4 feels so much like good old fashioned SOCOM it's crazy. The only thing that keeps S2 ahead of it imho are the maps. S2 had so many incredible maps. Mixer, Foxhunt, Desert Glory, Abandoned, Blizzard, Frostfire, Crossroads, Vigilance, Chain Reaction, Sujo, and of course NIGHT STALKER. You could play them all again and again.

Look at it this way, since you don't understand: We already know the gameplay of Socom is better than GRAW; so, the fact that Confrontation looks as good as it's looking now + classic Socom gameplay = HEAVEN.

We've never had a Socom with smooth graphics; YET, we were always willing to forgive it for it's gameplay. Now, we don't have to settle for less in the graphics department, either!

That's nuts man... I haven't really jumped into COD4 online... but I was playing it the other day when my cousin brought it over.

I remember saying to him how much S&D felt like classic Socom. It's not quite there... but it was damn close. Far closer than that GRAW nonsense.

Funny how I was glued to the television for about 5 hours straight even though I had shit to do. :D

Depends...I would say Graw is between Socom 2-3. In terms of how good. They thing about Socom is also...They have become progressing worse each installment. 1 I will still say is my favorite online game todate. 2 was good. 3 was absolute ****. CA...Well...That doesn't exist >_>.
Every installment they go with more is better, bigger is better. Yet all that does is fuck up Socom even more.
So I would say take caution on anything with Socom anymore. Unless that is your type of thing
