:( Oh God, grandjedi was right. They really have turned Nami into pure fanservice. :(

I just can't accept it.

my explanation is that since the storyline progressed, nami matured physically but yea, the bust is quite exagerrated if you make the comparisons.

damn another week til the anime resumes its canon plot

Obviously manga readers have known about 405's events for a long time, but it's what finally cemented Oda as the best manga writer to have ever graced Shounen Jump by far.

Unlike all the other "popular character" driven shounen's, Oda actually dared to split Luffy off from every single member of the main cast and still has for over a year, because the story demanded it. And thats the difference. One Piece actually is a story, it has events that link in to previous ones and there is an ultmate goal. All the other manga just feel like randomly stitched together fights with the explanation for the conflicts often a complete afterthought.

I wish Japan would somehow revolutionise it's anime production and switch to seasons instead of weekly episodes. When its firing on all cylinders (like the last 2 eps) the OP anime is utterly fantastic, but when it drags and its the bottom tier animation it's just not even worth watching.

It's been a year?!!! Holy crap that went by really fast. That can't be true

"WHAAAAT? Toei phoned in this episode's animation!?" ::feigns shock::

Hopefully they'll put more effort in when SHE appears. On that note, it seems that SHE is being voiced by Sailor Moon.

Half those girls look like they came out of an episode of Shin-chan.

What episode kicks off Thriller Bark? I was a little bit into that when I stopped watching sometime last year and am not sure where to begin again.

Also, getting my roommate into the series, started up at the start, and man, what a ways the show has come since inception (mostly, if not entirely, for the better). Fun to rewatch certainly, but I feel like I have to keep assuring him that there's less characters like Coby and more badass stuff down the line. I think the goal is to make it through Arlong Park to see if he really likes it... that seems like a fair litmus test for the series.

What in the hell?

I popped in my funi season 1 One Piece boxset in today, and watched the first four eps of One Piece and I was being weirded out CONSTANTLY.

Am I the only one, when reading One Piece manga, or comics in general, I pull all the images together in my mind, and animate the pages with visually, inside my head? So I'll see, like say, 5 panels, and I'll animate it inside my head.

It's something I have learned to do, especially since it's a part of my job as an animator.

But anyways, the animated visions that have been framed into my head after reading One Piece manga so much (especially volume 1) where the Luffy flashback takes place were WAY better than what you see in the anime, and I was expecting each scene to look just like the way I pictured it in my head. I saw this shit years ago, but for some reason I was expecting it to look totally different.

Like, you know the part where Shanks' first mate, in the manga, grabs the end of his gun, and then whacks those bandits, and it switches over to him aiming his gun at the bandit leader and finally, lighting his cigarette? I was watching this part and I was expecting it to look how it did in the manga, but instead it was awful.

For reference, this is the scene I'm talking about, followed by the next page:

http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/1/35/

Here's how the anime does it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5qcE8BR0HA

Am I the only person who does this when reading comics?

Either way, watching One Piece anime, or at least EARLY One Piece episodes after reading the manga for so long, clearly exposes the manga's superiority. In the manga's first chapter you have so much humor and crap going on: Luffy stabbing himself in the cheek which gives him the scar on his face, "If you guys want him to go one of you's gonna have to stay behinid!" "Sorry laddy! You've been beached!", and more which is completely absent in the anime's rendition.

I know what you mean, but in a way this is good because it means I can justify reading the manga AND watching the anime, something I do for no other story.

the manga is awesome for cool dramatic poses and it has loads of 'shots' which make me go 'fuuuuuck' and when they get translated to the anime they're never as cool.

i.e. leaving Alabasta, the manga was cool was fuck, the anime not so much.

But then some bits in the anime work better than the manga. the action scenes can be awesome, a lot of jokes work better and the voice acting is perfect. seeing guys like Franky or Luffy in action is better than a still shot. One of my fave bits ever was when Luffy destroyed Arlong's base and shouted to Nami that she was his nakama. It was delivered really well and had much more impact than a text bubble. that whole arc was just superior in anime form.

I love both, I use the manga to keep up to date and watch the anime a long time after. Currently watching ep 287!

the latest chapter of one piece, holy shit!!

Ace and Luffy are not blood related, Ace is Gold Roger's son!! I always knew they looked too different. So Luffy > Dragon and Garp, Ace > Gold Roger, what a lineage!

Quick question...

I caught up to the anime (410 right?).

I want to watch some of the movies, which ones are the best? Just want to see the best =P

Two, four, six and nine are musts. Seven if you want a heap of ridiculous fat titty fan-service with a reasonably tolerable plot and decent animation.

Dead End Adventure (4) and Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura (9) are both good movies for fans of One Piece.

Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island (6) is the only true "must watch" of the One Piece films. Its even good enough to entertain people who aren't even One Piece fans. Not only does the film have its own unique art style that fits and is well animated, but the story actually beat the manga to the punch. Of course this is entirely due to the talented director, Mamoru Hosoda (of "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" fame).

So yeah, definitely watch the 6th movie. And if you are still feeling bored after that you can partake in the 4th and 9th movies if you want. Stop after that though as the rest are boring, embarrassing and, in one case, vastly inferior to the anime version.

Just watched 404 and 405, and HOLY EPIC SHIT, I was literally at the edge of my seat the whole time, 404 had hands down the best animation on the entire series and 405 a pretty awesome cliffhanger, watching luffy deal with frustration and hopelessness was something we've never seen before, I really though they were going to get away from there somehow. And the real Bartholomew Kuma is one cool son of a bitch

<3 One piece, it never fails to deliver

Oh shit.

I was perfectly content to never watch any of the movies but now I guess I will.

I've been re-reading from from the end of Shabondy Archipelago, and this arc (like every other arc basically) is so much better when read in succession. This whole thing, Shabondy/Impel Down/Marineford arc, is probably gonna end up better than Water 7. The only thing thats missing is that emotional touch you with when the Strawhats are together.

I really fucking miss the Strawhats. It's gonna be so awesome when they all get together again.

I'm on 147 now, I freaking loooooove this anime. I didn't have high hopes for it, 'cause the only episode I had ever seen before was some random 4Kids version and it seemed pretty lame. I started watching the subbed ones from the beginning and I can't believe how awesome it is.

what do you guys feel about not seeing the other straw hats for so long?

I'm kind of missing them now, after being with them every step of the way and learning about their pasts (and with brooke just joining) its really odd to suddenly miss a huge chunk of their adventure.

Do you think after we see what happens with Luffy we'll see each character's individual journeys during this phase? That would take years right?? But then again I'd HATE to never know what happened to them, at least in some detail. I don't want them to just turn up if you know what I mean.

they're all obviously going through a crisis of strength as individuals and as a crew, especially after we've just seen the marine hq and white beards team being so damn strong, and after being crushed by kuma and kizaru.

How will sanji and zoro keep up with monster strength? what more can Luffy possibly do?

damn OP is too damn good.

One Piece is a pretty good series.

Probably the only series to seriously make me tear up.

I need to buy that movie 8 poster with them pumping their fists. T_T

I do kinda miss the Straw Hats. Can't wait to see them reunited.

I think someone else said earlier in the thread that Other Straw Hats' adventures would be detailed more in the anime, filler-style?

That's just a rumor as nothing has been confirmed, but it is a good idea.

Also, new movie 10 trailer came out, One Piece: Strong World. No subtitles for it yet but it looks pretty good.

Am I the only person who still hasn't gotten used to Sunny? I just can't. I still see Merry as the strawhats ship, and I hate the overall design of Sunny. While Merry's goat face was cute, Sunny just looks kiddy. I also hate the lion paw anchor.

I never quite accepted it in the manga but once I saw it in the anime I was sold. The head is crap but everything else about it is awesome. The aquarium, the lookout post, the lawn deck, the specialised rooms like kitchen etc.

I do wonder if this is it for the ship now, will it ever evolve again? Iceberg said its the best ship he's ever seen? So it must already be good enough to top the likes of the moby dick and the top navy ships, I don't know how that works though.

But it definitely feels more like a tool or object than Merry did. Merry sinking was one of the saddest moments I've seen in any story,
I cried - twice (manga and anime)!!

I really need to start back up again.

I stopped at the end of the arc with the water city, water 7 I think it was called.

Not sure if I want to continue with the manga or anime, or wait and figure this out later as more chapters/episodes come out and I forget more of One Piece. :lol

Yeah, jsut saw it now.

Animation was really fucking good this epi. Especially when Luffy punched the crap outta the panther.

So guys, which punch had more impact to you. The panther one or the royals one at the auction :D
If I had to pick one, I'd take the auction house blast on Chalros. It's the most important punch in the manga, and the anime did it even more justice than it did the Bellamy KO.

I am impressed that the animators put that much effort into the panther punch. I can only hope it means they intend to step up the quality for big fights in the coming arcs. There are some tremendous moments ahead. :D

The pacing is much better in this Shabondy->Amazon Lily arc than the Water7->Enies Lobby one. However, if it continues like this, then I hope they inject some filler soon. The events to come are huge, so I think they'll have to inject that filler soon, if they don't want to disrupt the flow of the story. PEACE.

God, Moria's voice in the anime is awful. I always gave him a deep voice when reading the manga since he's a fucking goth, but he has like..the most squeaky voice in the show next to Chopper.
nah, Moria is a freak, totally suits him

kaizoku

I'm not as deluded as I make myself out to be
I loved how many of the characters on thriller bark had funny voices which kept going squeaky intermittently. gave it a nice unique touch.

Think I'll be going on a One Piece marathon tonight.

whats this panther punch everyone talks about? I dont remember him in the manga.

I don't really remember the bellamy punch as one of the standout moments in the series either! the arlong punch was more significant to me.

Himuro said:
Breaking Arlong's nose > Arlong punch > Lucci punch > punching Crocodile > Bellamy punch

You must be kidding.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4zR6jcflfg

Another great punch is the Lucchi punch. Gear 3rd baby.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaJ6HQvtT04

the bellamy punch was cool, but I never saw bellamy as a threat, as far as I was concerned luffy won that fight in the bar, and bellamy's crushing of dreams etc revealed he wasn't a pirate of any significance, they were just like school bullies.
