They don't need to buy them if they keep paying for their game development. Nintendo doesn't "own" Game Freak, Alpha Dream, HAL Laboratory, Intelligent Systems, Next Level Games, Good Feel and so on, but most if not all of those teams' software is published by Nintendo.
