Sonic Forces - Casino Forest gameplay

the lighting isn't even good. I noticed that the recorder player is trying to get passed the slot machines because of how much time they take. Lives aren't even as valuable in a game with a save menu and stage select and with no special stages (requirements).

Two boostpads right next to eachother. Why? They aren't cumulative... And they don't even send into a speed section. They just throw you into this pit:

Holy shit...

This should of been the first post, I don't know how people hate Forces, and talk about Mania as if it's the best thing ever.

Mania's great and Forces looks like a cash in. Mania looks like they used every penny and working hour to squeeze as much into it as they could. The visuals are amazing and the physics are spot on and the level design is good so you have plenty of room to fuck around and have fun with the mechanics. (Most people don't realise that new players should pick Tails, because he can help when you're having problems with the platforming until you're more used to it. Sonic is more of a harder difficulty by comparison.)

Because it's possible for two games in the same series to have widely different quality?

You're really asking how people can love Mania, but hate the way Forces looks?

Why the Sonic CD jump sound

why

Also, the gameplay doesn't even look that bad. Y'all are overreacting.
Yea like... it doesn't look amazing by any means but some are talking like this looks like dog shit. I don't think I'm buying this but it looks much better than most of the previous videos

Look at all the tape holding this playthrough together, though. That'll all fall apart when you aren't a SEGA representative playing this game for advertising purposes.

You can still see other cracks in the video, too, like Sonic stopping on a ledge that has sloped to the point of almost being vertical. Plus, compared to the level design of any previous Sonic game, even Generations (Which this engine is copied from), this is just... bland.

Sonic Mania is one of the best games of 2017 and arguably the strongest title in the entire franchise. It's the whole package. Great presentation, gameplay, level design, and music.

Meh. Not the most visually striking level, and such an odd combination to put casino elements in a night forest. Doesnt mesh well.
A crazy combination like that could work well; look at Press Garden from Mania.

It doesn't because the art design is just not up to par.

Yup. It's essentially just 2 different sets of Lost World assets combined haphazardly.

Meanwhile, as someone else pointed, the series has meshed up similar concepts before, right down the original Casino Night Zone being planned as an example of this until they cut time travel out from Sonic 2's plot.

It's because Mania has fantastic gameplay and art design while this has bland art design and the 2D gameplay looks boring.

It's really not hard.

Because people buy Sonic games no matter what. 06 was a million seller. Boom managed to sell roughly half a million physical copies despite its... everything being known well in-advance & heavily ridiculed upon launch, & despite being a Wii U game. That means at least 1/27 Wii U owners bought that mess on-disc (As usual, no figures on digital sales).

This game also has a character creator & an edgy plot. The game seems generally reviled, but the same people who always buy Sonic games are hyped for it.

So it seems the Cycle has been reborn anew.

As a fan of the series I think I still get a bit of residual cringe every time I see the picture since it wasn't applicable at all to any game post-Unleashed, but I'm not even ashamed to admit I got Cycle'd hard as fuck with this one and I'm honestly still kind of shocked that it happened.

Silly, Young, Naive 2015 Sami: "Bro they've been working on this next game for THREE YEARS ALREADY, it's gonna be absolutely amazing when they finally show it"

Silly, Less Young, Still Naive 2016 Sami: "uh that reveal trailer wasn't very good and it's weird they don't have a name yet BUT I'm sure it'll be amazing I mean these are the Unleashed and Generations guys, they wouldn't take so long if it wasn't amazing"

Disappointed Sami, 2017, Who Will Most Certainly Be Fooled Again: "this looks like shit, they'll never fool me again"

Lol what.

People don't even hate Forces. People want it to be good. But Sonic Team isn't really helping people out at this point. It's really not that difficult to look at this and then look at something like Studiopolis and wonder which one has that true Sonic feeling to it. I'd love for Forces to have that, but it simply does not. Not for me anyway. And this is coming from someone who loved Generations and was okay with its level design.

I'm not sure how someone can see this gameplay video and then see Mania's beautiful sprite artwork, and think that Sonic Team should get the benefit of the doubt.

The contrast between the dull colors of the forest and the bright neonish colors of the casino do not show well at all. It doesn’t help that the lighting makes the casino props look dull and colorless as well. Should’ve rethought what kind of environments would contrast well with a casino(maybe like a space station casino would be amazing)

I refuse to believe this game has been in development for four years.

Ditto. Unless Sonic Team went on another "trip" for "inspiration" like they did for Adventure (They just went on an expensive South American vacation under the guise it was to design the Mystic Ruins).

The founder of the site Hogfather writes for actually addressed that:

Also lol this too
Dreadknux I trust, Hogfather I don't.

....

A guy who writes for a Sonic site has a bias AGAINST a Sonic game?

Are you for real?
Yeah I am for real. Do you honestly think writers for fansites of long running are going to automatically love every upcoming thing they see by default? Or that they're not going to hate something because it goes against their expectations? You've never been involved in a community that fucking hates upcoming game X for whatever reason? the man already wrote an article filled with petty nitpicking. Of course fan communities are capable of bias in both directions.

I also 100% think this game is going to be boring, but I wanted to hear it from someone else, lol.

Everytime i saw new footage of forces or heard a new song i was enjoying it on repeat until the game came out and i double dipped on it.

I watch a trailer for Forces and i liked that Supporting Me is a song maybe the city level i guess? I feel so indifferent.

I would hope they wouldn't since otherwise their opinion would mean nothing. I would expect that they would be more willing to give it a chance though since I wouldn't see the point of writing for a fansite about a character or franchise you were predisposed to hating. Also, that article is a pretty poor example of petty nitpicking seeing as he pretty thoroughly explains his points throughout it.

It's not unlikely that some Sonic fanatics are masochists.

You'd probably have to have at least been one at some point to still have hope for the franchise

The music is horrible. I have always expressed my disdain for Sonic games, but I do like some of the music in the games.

What would Hogfather have to gain from spreading misinformation about the game? If Dreadknux hired him as a writer (even as a volunteer the "staff" label makes him a representative of the site) then one would assume that he trusts him to have at least a modicum of objectivity as a journalist for the site. I'm just curious what would make you come to the conclusion that he's "hugely biased" against this particular game, especially since from my recollection that particular guy was a fan of Generations. I might be remembered wrong though.

The physics are definitely borked somewhat. Look at 0:25-0:27, where Sonic hits a wall after bouncing off a flipper, lands at the ground below it, and somehow has instant momentum going forward despite falling straight down onto a flat surface.

I mean, I know that it will be like Generations's Classic Sonic physics, but I don't remember it being inconsistent like this. It's like Sonic Heroes all over again, which also rocketed you forward after landing even if you just fall straight down.

Sonic just looks better in 2D. His character animations in 3D just don't look right and the levels look bland.

Sega need to use Sonic Mania as a template for the series now. I don't know why they bother making games like Generations/Colours/Forces.

I would have thought they would jump at the chance to make them in 2D as it would cut down development costs.

You mean the one where he points out stuff like the way too often occuring speed boosters? If that's nitpicking to you then go ahead.

Coming from Sonic Generations, this looks so ugly graphically.

A few games like Generations, Lost World, or Colors look better by only raising their native res. Though Unleashed seems to be the last game they went full budget on.

Don't believe that this iteration of Forces had been worked on 4 years. Lots scrapped stuff had to happen.

I'm really disappointed by how this looks. That is truly awful level design. And why even include Classic Sonic if you're just going to try to make him play like Modern with boost pads, linear 2D levels and other garbage?

Not only that, but think about how Studiopolis included the casino theme, but spun it their own way with unique gimmicks, references, et cetera, all tied to the film/tv theme. Now here's... a lame Casino Night Zone pasted over the Sonic Lost World "night forest" background, conceptually. The ruins or forest themes, at least in the video, don't seem to interact or play with the Casino Night elements in any way.

It seriously looks like the lost world forest stage with an owl with assets from a casino level.

Visuals clash and the gameplay doesn’t look very good.
No clue why Classic sonic is even in here
