Sonic Forces - Casino Forest gameplay

Visually they need to make things pop more and more distinctive more vibrant and less bland, also level designs needs some extra work they should maybe hire some of the Sonic Mania team to help them out

Here’s lost world in comparison

I think it may reuse some assets like the squares on the pillars, but it’s not very flattering in Forces.
Colores are really drab. Just kind of ugly. LW was a 60fps Wii U game too.

There's been this weird fan-gamey quality of the 2D footage of Sonic Forces, which could just be the necessary "evil" of pulling the camera way back and perhaps the music. It just gives off that vibe...

Man the classic Sonic gameplay seems eerily soulless. It's got no personality or charm. Shit just does not seem fun to play. At this point, I'm hoping I can mildly enjoy 25-30% of Forces.

More gifs. Wow, I was one of the first ones saying the 2D gameplay looked rough back when we only had a couple of seconds of Green Hill footage.

Now that we have plenty of uninterrupted footage the game looks even worse. What the fuck happened? 6 years and we get this? Did half of the current Neo Sonic Team get fired? Did Sega replace them with cheap college graduates?

What the fuck happened, man? Lol

What's funny is all I've wanted after Generations was another game like Generations, and it's already been six years without a follow-up.

Finally something new. It's still doing nothing for me though. I had it preordered but I'm gonna cancel it and wait on reviews and impressions. I haven't liked anything I've seen beyond the villain team up. Gameplay and stage design have looked just awful so far and the avatar is such a dumb idea that has the bonus of having super shitty boring looking gameplay.

I feel like they had to have been working on a more ambitious game that didn't work out so they slapped this thing together in a year or so. It just looks so poor and lazy. :(

Also stop making the 3D Sonic games like 50-70% 2D gameplay.

This looks like a level made by an in-game level creator. Floating, bland blocks dotted with preset interactables drifting by a background that doesn’t quite mesh with the levels art style.

Complete with ‘just spam rings all over’ section.

100%, this looks shockingly terrible. or like, this looks like the shorter gimmick levels from Sonic Colors. Which was fine except that that game was also 50% bespoke fancy levels as well, and so far this game is...not

Oh wow, I hadn't seen that Forces gif. Sonic dropping like a rock.

What's really irritating is that, even if it launched poorly, they could conceivably rework and fix Classic Sonic stages and gameplay in patches. Like Naughty Dog does. But they won't.

Funny enough when Dimps did Sonic Generations 3DS and remade this zone, they actually did a better job at hitting that classic gameplay compared to what Sonic Team did in the HD game. It wasn't perfect but it was closer.

Strange isn't it?

Yeah, it was a weird side-effect of them outright lifting stage layouts from prior games. The layouts didn't work right if the physics didn't. Unfortunately from Emerald Coast on, the layouts become clunky messes filled with Homing Attack spots, even for Classic Sonic.

No clue why Classic sonic is even in here

Cheaper to shit out 2.5D levels than create more 3D stages.

Aka, the same old shit that this series has been going through since 1998. Sega knows they can't sell a 90-minute game and doesn't want to spend money to make a decent amount of 3D levels, so we get gimmicks and filler.

There's something amazing about Classic Sonic being the "shitty friend" though hahaha

This looks terrible. Its weird because this game had the longest development time than any previous 3D Sonic game yet they cant make it any better? One day they will maybe make a decent 3D Sonic game but this is certainly not it. It barely looks better than Unleashed a game that released in 2008.

Sonic just looks better in 2D. His character animations in 3D just don't look right and the levels look bland.

Sega need to use Sonic Mania as a template for the series now. I don't know why they bother making games like Generations/Colours/Forces.

I would have thought they would jump at the chance to make them in 2D as it would cut down development costs.
Because Generations and Colors were legit fun

I was considering giving this a chance. But yeesh. When Mario is coming out and every trailer drips with genius, why would I ever buy this? Fool me thrice...

I really enjoyed Colors and Generations, but I can't say any footage of this game has made me excited. It looks like it's lacking care and polish. I think I'm gonna pass.

I'm just really curious why this looks so damn bad? Like, if they had a new art team, or if the developers were just pressed on budget it would make sense. But the Green Hill level that they showed looks perfectly fine, which is why this level feels so jarring.

That does not inspire confidence, to say the least.

I kinda liked the music at first, but then I heard it 3 more times and I was over it. The instrumentation used in a lot of Forces tracks really bugs me. I do not like the electronic elements of most songs so far, but this one was okay because it had less of that. On the other hand, it still sounds like an improved Sonic 4 song, which is not a high bar, so...

The level itself looks very dull gameplay-wise, there's really nothing to it other than bumpers, rings, slots, and more rings. Visually it gives me war flashbacks to two unpleasant Lost World levels at the same time. The concept is neat on paper, but the execution is very basic. I wonder if the Modern/Avatar stages in this area will play with it a bit more to make it interesting.

Even if the classic physics were borked Generations had much more interesting levels. Seeing the Death Egg setpiece gorgeously re-enacted in Sky Sanctuary, avoiding the truck in a different perspective in City Escape, chasing the signpost in Crisis City, taking down the airship in Rooftop Run, etc.

What’s the throughline with Casino Forest? What’s the memorable setpiece? Why does the ending come out of nowhere with no buildup? Where’s the scenario design? Even the more fundamentals-focused levels in Generations like Speed Highway were well rounded in length.
Fuckin' thisssss. There's nothing thematically interesting about this level's design. It's just casino pieces, but in a forest now.

This is enough for me not to buy this game. They just don't get it why physics matters in Sonic gameplay.
I tolerated it in Generations (but it was already awful for sure) but this time I am getting seriously annoyed by how bad these physics are.

Especially when we got Mania recently, that did it right.

I agree. Sonic Generations on 3DS was, somehow, pretty fine even it was not a 1/1 with the original physics (and they also put the homing attack I think lol). But overall, the stages were fun and played fine.

This should of been the first post, I don't know how people hate Forces, and talk about Mania as if it's the best thing ever.

I've nearly finished Mania and it's ok. I definitely don't understand how people are naming it GOTY and giving it 8s and 9s.

Still, I'd take it over this shit any day.

Yup. After Generations all I wanted was for Sonic Team to just latch onto that formula and throw out another one or two. It was the best 3D Sonic game and the 2D stuff felt good (not Mega Drive perfect, but it was enjoyable). Now we are getting another Generations style game and it just seems to lack everything that made that game so good.

Damn they are trying really hard to make me delete my preorder :(

I was really pumped after Sonic Mania, but this looks terrible everytime they show it.

6 years? Sonic Team put out LW in 2013.
Weird that it and Odyssey took the same amount of time

The platform is 3D, but the terrible lighting is hiding the top side.

It was moreso the fact he was running, then immediately stopped to start "falling" on the lip.

What is with the constant hidden springs? These are never fun and make absolutely no sense to be invisible here.

Edit: Damn, I see it was already posted.

Those classic Sonic physics don't look right. I don't remember those problems in Generations, at least not as common as to show up in a couple minute video.

The level design is so boring as well. No enemies, just random Casino Night props poorly blended into a generic forest. Like something from a level editor, just random floating bits around a vague theme, but not really.

The music is awful, Sonic 4 tier off brand Genesis sounds.

I thought this game might be "alright" in the same way Sonic Adventure 1, 2 and Heroes are alright, but this looks not really great at all.

60fps and having to develop the game for multiple platforms. The game does not look that bad graphically gameplay wise, but it's not amazing either. I also think sega's trying to aim for 1080p 60fps for both the xbox one and ps4 versions of the game. It clearly looks better then ps3/360 unleashed and ps3/360 generations even though some of the cutscenes we seen so far are kinda lacking.IGN's clip of the level is higher quality.

Unleashed is one of the best looking 3D sonic games, it's hard to match.

The is that Unleashed was also multiplatform as well. Granted it was only between two consoles instead of four platforms, but the PS3 did reach 60fps for Unleashed in some areas. If they can't surpass Unleashed in terms of graphics it's because they purposely opt for the lower art style. Maybe because of budget or workload. Who knows

Why does sonic not drop rings?

Maybe it was a sacrifice they made to make the game run smoothly. Having dozens of rings bouncing all over the place probably won't do much good for the framerate, especially on the Switch, which apparently doesn't perform well as it is.

This isn't just bad, it's grotesque. If you can't get the physics right in a Sonic game you aren't going to get anything right.

The last time Sonic Team got the physics right on a Sonic game they actually developed was in 1994.

Not a new thing for sure but Mania releasing so recently has certainly made this more noticeable

Changing an established, core game mechanic to "make a game run smothly" is a terrible design decision if true. I mean, christ, you don't take the coins out of Mario, or the nuts/bolts out of Ratchet and Clank.

And since when has Sonic Team been concerned about locked framerates and performance? Sonic Unleashed on the PS3 says hello.

I am a massive Sonic fan, and a fan of both Sega and Sonic Team, but this just feels like yet another rushed, incomplete, and almost incompetent title with a team that doesn't really have a grasp on the franchise, formula, or main mechanics that make Sonic games have that magical touch. The fact that there was so much control and safeguarding with Sonic Mania, and not this (an """official""" game) is very telling.

Since Sonic Lost World. But while I didn't really like that game's art, they at least made a simplified art style that looked visually appealing. Three zones that were in all games -

This game doesn't seem to be compensating for its lack of detail with anything, and is just content in looking like a worse Generations.

Corrected.
Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were developed by Sega Technical Institute. I doubt many members originally from Sonic Team that moved there are with Sonic Team today outside of Iizuka and a few key members maybe (educated guess).
