The loss of Obamacare would be like a death sentence but they’d vote for Trump again

I think so, I just can't fathom the lengths what I would do to keep my family alive if they were sick and in the example I posted they just had to keep what was already in place.

It's crazy

On the one hand, your husband might die, but sometimes God causes miracles to happen.

On the other hand, the country might be destroyed by gay trans communists who want to ruin the manufacturing and coal industries because they believe in a Chinese hoax and who want to give all the other jobs to Mexicans because they want to commit White Genocide. They also run a child prostitution ring out of a pizza shop and intend on taking over the world and wiping out Christianity through Muslim immigration and a one world government begun with the United Nations. And they hate cops!

Choose wisely.

It's more and more obvious to me every day that the reason Tump is president is because voters really don't even know anything at all.

It's kind of nice though, because honestly, before Trump started his yuuuuge rise, I didn't know much about politics. I just hated him because he seemed like an asshole, and now I've gotten super into politics and try to become more educated about it every day.

It's blatantly obvious to me that most republicans live in a different world than everyone else, so I can understand where they're coming from kind of (not to say it's right, they can all go fuck themselves imo). The problem is that most people know fuck all about politics, and they just vote for whoever they like more based on the 30 seconds of soundbites they hear a couple of times a week.

I'm drunk and rambling, but basically I'm not teling GAF anything it doesn't already know, I just started a new job though and overheard :

Guy 1: you think trump will get impeached?
Guy 2: well what the hell would he get impeached for?
Me: I mean no, even if he murdered a toddler in front of a bunch of cameras they would spin it that the toddler was a terrorist and he was really saving the country and all of our jobs or something. All the Russia shit is pretty damning though.
Guy 1: well sure he might be bought out by Russia, but if we had Hillary instead it'd be the same thing, except instead of Russia the Towel Heads would be writing the checks.

I just decided to not talk about politics at work anymore.

i dont see where it says they would vote for him again. Am i missing it?

edit: i mean theres something in the opening but its not a quote. i was curious as to whether that was an opinion from before or after but cant find them saying that. No transcript comes up on ctrl-f and no video is popping up.

"Tickled plum to death," said Robin Taylor, who — like so many in fiercely Republican Kentucky — voted for Trump in November and would vote for him again.

My title was condensing the actual title of the article though as I as only allowed limited characters

Or maybe Nixon. I think Nixon was the first "modern" Republican presidency with all the stupidity that entailed.

All of this shit goes back to Goldwater.

As for the original question: A lot of Trump voters voted on the basis of wanting to hurt their political opponents so they actually support policies that will hurt them as long as it hurts someone they don't like or view as undeserving (liberals, LBBTQ, minorities) more. A literal race to the bottom where they will cheer the fire that is about to burn down their house as long as it burns down the house of someone they hate first.

I know some want us to be nice and reach out to them, but... I don't think I would know how to have even a basic conversation with someone like this, much less talk them into making a rational decision.

I'm pretty convinced many people are in fact not rational actors that work towards their own gain. Which hurts a lot of theories about how society is supposed to work.

A lot of economic research is based on this assumption, and yeah you're spot on about it being fundamentally flawed.

Even if this was actual facts I would still go with the option that keeps my spouse alive...maybe I am the bad one?

Nothing on you and i didnt mean to come across like that if thats how it appeared. i just couldnt find anything in the article and was expecting a video of the "Tickled plum to death" interview. Was expecting another "i voted under the influence"

Saw a good documentary that essentially criticised that main point. They tied the reoccurring financial crises like the Great Depression and the Housing Crisis to that troubled assumption.

The masses pretty clearly cannot be relied on to stop going in particular economic direction before things go bad. We've failed too many times.

Is there explanation to this phenomenon?

I feel the biggest answer to this is the brainwashing power of Fox News, pundits and the echo chamber people put themselves in once indoctrined to these outlets. People are going to jump immediately to racism and I wouldn't argue against that but I feel theres an even bigger picture that needs to be looked at. Racism may be a catalyst for this for some or a lot of these people. It's absolutely scary though how people listen to these pundits and Fox News and just mindlessly regurgitate the rhetoric they hear. I'm sure there are people that hate Obama because he was black, absolutely no question. Fox and the pundits have created a hatred of all things liberal though, look at the hatred for Hillary and Clintons. It could have been Clintoncare and Fox news still would have had the masses frothing with mindless hatred for it for no reason other than it was a liberal Dem policy. The ground work for fascism was right here in America all along and working its magic but it was ignored for too long. I honestly don't even know how you begin to fight against it, not seeing the stranglehold and insane hold it has over a large group of the population.

Article in OP said:
Few regard Obamacare as perfect, but many emphasize that when Republicans next consider a health-care makeover, it's critical they listen to those throughout the state and country — including countless fellow Republicans — who would not be able to afford coverage without it.

...

For many in Whitesburg, the hope now is that when health-care reform is debated next time, the voices of those who need what Obamacare offers will be listened to. If it's to be improved, they say, that's fine. Just don't toss out its benefits.

Yeah. And maybe next time the Republicans will consider giving you a pony and a blowjob every Thursday as well. Idiots.

Personally, I'm rooting for the Republicans to introduce something better. Premiums in my state have risen by over 60%. No one can afford it, so providers have slowly been dropping out. First it was BCBS followed by Cigna. All that's left is Humana, who already gave a deadline for when they are out. That leaves us with nothing. We are not the only state with this issue, no matter how many times you turn your cheek. The ACA will implode. Something has to change.

Mankind in general is not rational (a minority are) so the sooner we stop pretending that we are the better.

You're "rooting" for them to introduce something better? Have you been living under a rock the last week? Republicans have had 7 years to offer a better replacement, they now control the Senate, Congress and the Presidency and they still couldn't offer anything better.

You saw the Republican alternative. Cuts in healthcare, cuts in health research and millions losing health insurance coverage.

And the sole reason the latter did not go trough was that didn't go far enough for the Freedom Caucus.

The Republicans don't have anything better. They just want the ACA to implode to stick it to Obama and the Democrats.

If Republicans had something better, we'd have seen it by now.

Everything you are describing is happening because of healthcare being treated like a commodity and market greed being encouraged. You really think the GOP, the party of the 1%, gives two fucks about improving that?

"Tickled plum to death," said Robin Taylor, who — like so many in fiercely Republican Kentucky — voted for Trump in November and would vote for him again.

But she'd been desperately worried the president was actually set to keep his pledge to repeal and replace Obamacare. It's a system she and her husband Mike rely upon to survive.

Robin has hereditary diabetes and a heart condition. Mike has coal worker's pneumoconiosis, also known as black lung disease, an often fatal disease he developed while spending years working as a trucker in the coal industry. Mike, who's 56, has a tumour in his chest the size of a lemon and can't walk more than about 50 metres without needing help from an oxygen tank to breathe.

Shaking my head.

Dumbfucks lucked out to even get healthcare because other people actually think about others.

This shit isn't even dumb, some hindsight bullshit, or anything. This is some serious imbecilic moron village idiot shit.

Paul Ryan has been talking shit for ages. I'm not surprised they have nothing, but that doesn't mean I want them to fail so the ACA can implode and screw a lot of people over, like my state. There is nothing wrong with me hoping it happens.

These people are unable to separate their personal identity from their political identity. For them, it's like they're literally betraying themselves by voting for anything other than their party of choice, regardless of what their party will do.

That kind of loyalty is really impressive when you think about it.

but that doesn't mean I want them to fail so the ACA can implode and screw a lot of people over, like my state. There is nothing wrong with me hoping it happens.

I'm aware of that, but I'm not going to stop hoping for the best outcome. That would be a terrible way to live.

That is why that "reach out and maybe you can change their mind" bullshit is bullshit. Folks are willing to die for a man and party that is looking for ways to kill them. Even Jonestown had a few people that realized shit was bad.

7 years of opposing ACA and than have nothing to show for it, while the only plan would have ended with premiums skyrocketing and millions losing health insurance coverage. And again, the sole reason that did not go trough was that didn't go far enough for the Freedom Caucus.

And you are trying to pin that only on Paul Ryan? Are you okay?

I'm aware of that, but I'm not going to stop hoping for the best outcome. That would be a terrible way to live.

They voted to lose their Obamacare by voting for a man who specifically told them he would take it away, and evidently they would vote for him again. These people aren't idiots who were conned - they knew that losing their Obamacare meant that they and the people around them would suffer. They just didn't care that much. Their hatred of others and their apathy towards even close family and friends outweighs their desire to live.

At this point, the only thing that can be done for them is to protect the healthcare systems that keep them alive, because if those systems fail even the people who don't vote to kill themselves and everyone around them will suffer, too.

They hate black/brown people and foreigners more than they love living. It's pretty damn pathetic.

People don't know shit, and for this reason, they believe any person in ascribed authority is an expert. Triply so if they're rich, hence the rise of alternative facts. "If he's smart, he knows what he's doing" is an answer I consistently hear, and of course it matches the ideals and memes of the culture: if you're poor, you're just dumb and undeserving, after all. A Law of Attraction on delusions.

What's most unfortunate is the GOP depends and literally preys on the precarity and intellectual ineptitude of others. This is a party of sociopaths.

As a Canadian with universal healthcare, this particular issue is not really relevant to me. But over the decades of voting I constantly look at each party platform and make my decision based on what is best for my family (as an example income splitting when my wife was at home with the kids).

I can't fathom how you would vote for the party that would be responsible for the death of yourself or your loved ones.

Is there explanation to this phenomenon?

Yes. Racism. Joy Reid said it best.

The Rustbelt voted for Trump because they hated Obama but liked the Care. They voted to take away Medicaid from illegals and brown people but thought they'd keep theirs.

So these are the noble, salt of the Earth white working class that we should be striving to reach across the aisle for right?

Yes. It's really, really, really, really important.

And don't call them racist, or they'll be even more likely to vote for the party who wants to take away their health care and sentence their loved ones to death.

-----

I'm just imagining how the last scene in this movie plays out: An older man, denied of the health care he needs by Republican politicians is on his death bed, his family surrounding him in tears. They all hold hands and listen carefully for his final words in his last moments.

Weakly, he croaks out the following:

"At least i didn't die a socialist. Also, I hate brown people. TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRU--"
