The Punk Thread

I find it strange we have a punk thread, yet there is no mention of 'The Clash'.

The OP says it can't really be defined, and to a degree that is true, but I would say the first album The Clash made is also the most Punk album they did.

Of course I also love 'London Calling'. It's the sort of album that you don't take to straight away, but it just grows on you.

The Clash got me into punk. But not a song anyone would expect. Death or Glory.

Yeeaah.

Call me crazy but the Clash just never did it for me. Nor did the Sex Pistols really, save for one or two songs.

Well, as I said, London Calling didn't at first, but it grows on you after repeat listening. And their first album is pure punk.

There are some Clash albums I don't like. The first two are great though.

That's the thing, not even those albums really did anything for me.

This here is a great band, the Big Boys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLH0gZy6Ugc&feature=related

This disc is more funk than punk, unlike their Fat Elvis comp. But it's still damn good funky punk rawk.

Yeah, well, you always wonder why people don't like what you do, even though you know really that everyone just has different tastes.

I like for instance the way Strummer sounds absolutely smashed in 'Right Profile'. I have always found the second set of lyrics after the chorus really interesting. He's telling the story of Montgomery Clift. How he smashed his face in, in a car accident. I love the way the story spills into the 2nd chorus.

I agree. I wasn't trying to make it sound like my tastes were better than anyone else's. Sorry if it came off that way.

Gloom (Japan)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGJ9pMSARu8

Yacopsae (Germany)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRuHYh-ynas

Wolfpack/Wolfbrigade (Sweden)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0DU7vzs6W4

I hope nobody confuses the latter with the Swedish Nazi organization "Wolfpack". They changed their name to Wolfbrigade to avoid that, in fact.

Gloom and Yacøpsæ are both killer!
Wolfpack are good too, although I'm not a big fan of later Wolfbrigade.

Heh, I've always loved both. This song in particular, you could demolish entire cities with those guitars. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_32k_kgCcw&feature=related

Also, Tragedy here is the hardcore band to end all hardcore bands.

I'll stop there for now. Really hard to choose with this band.

Acursed are good too if you like the melodic stuff.

Track 2
Track 8
Livet Är Den Längsta Vägen Till Helvetet

I prefer their less melodic earlier material but the more melodic stuff on the albums is good too.

Americanized
Krossad Dröm
To Kill The Pain

Crazy Spirit is fucking AWESOME. Have you heard of there other project Dawn of Humans. FUCKING SWEET as well. Both playing Chaos as well.

If you dig Annihilation Time, you may like RATFACE (members of AT). Just pure fucking RAW punk rock. One of my favorite bands.

Now theres something I can agree to.Dawn Of Humans tape is awesome, immetiately bougth both 7"'s after hearing it and they rule too. Dig CS and Ratface too.

Yeah, punk music (non-mainstream variety) is somewhat overlooked around here. But like Sonki said earlier, the elitism it affords you is kind of fun. :p

Elitism? Haha, I guess.

Cock Sparrer, GBH and Wasted Youth are all favorites in different ways. I almost swallowed my pride and bought expensive tickets to see the old version of Cock Sparrer at Punk Rock Bowling in Vegas last year. Not surprised that show sold out. The love and unity that band evokes is unlike any other.

You should definitely check out the links too. ADS is an early 80's Danish post punk almost deathrock (I hate the term "goth") band. Their stuff is pretty awesome and worth a listen...

I checked them out just now. ADS didn't do much for me, I'm afraid.

Cress was kinda cool... Haven't heard their name in a few years. But yeah, I guess ADS isn't for everyone. I'm probably partial to them cause I tend to lean toward Deathrock.

So I totally just remembered this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07-ctQEqHAI

It is fucking amazing, in the most cringeworthy way.

SNAKEBiTE are great though, you can get their stuff for free off the Don Giovanni website I think.

So... this by the way, was awesome... Super rad. I'm honestly jealous I never pulled anything like this off...

oh, GAF has a punk thread? cool. i just bought tickets today to go see Leatherface which i'm really psyched about, fucking love their newest album to bits. so good.

i haven't really been following punk/hc these past few years though.. so i'm wondering if anyone could recommend similar newer bands to Leatherface and Hot Water Music etc? punk that has some melancholy to it. not too wussified but still, there's gotta be an element of sadness in there or else i will most likely not like it.

i'm just super picky when it comes to punk, i dislike something like 99% of the bands i check out. i don't know why that is, lol.

oh and to contribute to the thread, this band is great too (i wonder if they still exist):

I Excuse - Respective Battlefield
I Excuse - Sex And Demonstration
I Excuse - What We Want Is Free

The best I can offer are His Hero Is Gone, From Ashes Rise, and Tragedy, if you haven't heard them already. You might also want to try some of the 80's DC emo. It's still very punkish, but with a tinge of sadness to it.

ohh yeah good stuff, definitely. i love Tragedy especially, and the early DC bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace. exactly my thing!

but thinking about much newer stuff from say 2006-2008 onwards, i have probably missed a TON of good hc/punk because i haven't been paying attention at all :( i just don't know where to look. and i feel old.

That Japanese band was pretty neat...

yep, they're fun. saw them live half a decade ago and they were really really really nice even though there was a serious language barrier.
