The Verge: Sony wants 60fps PS5 Pro ‘Enhanced’ games, but it’s happy to settle for less

Sources familiar with Sony’s plans tell The Verge that Sony is asking developers to create a new PS5 Pro-exclusive graphics mode in games that combines Sony’s new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling to 4K resolution with a 60fps frame rate and ray-tracing effects. Insider Gaming first reported on some of these Enhanced PS5 Pro game details last month.

While Sony wants this new mode in games, the PS5 Pro “Enhanced” label will still be available for a variety of other scenarios that include 30fps games. Developers have the option of increasing the target resolution for PS5 Pro games that run at a fixed resolution on PS5 or even increasing the target maximum resolution for games that run at a variable resolution on PS5.

A standard for electronics should maintain as many minimum required specifications as possible to maintain consistency, continuity, and performance. A premium branded standard like PS5 Pro Enhanced should keep those minimum requirements as high as reasonably possible. Introducing more wiggle room to get more titles under this brand only serves to dilute the brand's quality and meaning. This is the same shit that makes HDMI and USB and HDR standards less helpful than they should be.

If this is true than the system has no reason to exist unless it’s replacing the existing model. A pro system that offers nothing but improved RT isn’t needed IMHO. You got AAA games stuck at 30fps. I understand marketing but games need better frames not graphics IMHO.

Clickbait/misleading article title.

What Sony is doing is preventing a situation like Baldur's Gate 3 on XSS.

If you say every game has to be 60fps to have a PS5 Pro Enhanced label, why would Larian go out of its way to put in enhancements that will be difficult to market because it's not included in filters? It can still have other enhancements that aren't framerate or specifically 60 fps.

You have to be smart when you put down mandates. Otherwise, you lose support.

"Sony is also working on an ultra-boost mode for older games to make them run better on the PS5 Pro."

Not sure how that will work if the games in question are cpu limited. 10% boost mode isn’t going to gain much. Dragon Dogma for example with NPCs tied to the cpu.

The title isn't misleading. What you said is exactly what the title says. They are encouraging 60 fps but only a moron would promise it for all past and future games.

Didn't everyone trash Greenberg for 4 years for saying that?

All these xbox-centric sites and influencers have been trying to control the PS5 Pro narrative since it's inception.
And Sony let them do it since they know that they got is good(hopefully). Engagement is high and this is for leaks. Sony will have to talk about it soon.

The problem with greenberg is that he was suggesting 60fps was the standard this gen when his own internal studios/developers were doing 30fps games. Not mandating third parties to do a specific framerate is different. At least practice what you preach even if you don't force the practice on others.

Butt-hurt much, Tom Warren?
Seems like the whole article is another hit piece against PS5 Pro. Like DF, Tom Warren has gotten Microsoft's script: "It will still play 30fps games". The propaganda is in full effect.
EDIT: and it seems the narrative is working as intended, at least partially, based on some people's feedback on the purple thread.

That could mean we see PS5 Pro Enhanced games that run at between 1080p and 1440p resolution at 30fps on the base PS5
What games are they talking about? recent 30fps games like... Starfield? Hellblade 2? Do they think their readers are that stupid? AfAIK the last true 30fps capped game released on PS5 was years ago. They are completely delusional.

This is the same thing we saw with PS4 Pro. Sometimes the enhancement is frame rate, other times it's resolution. They can't force developers to make a game 60fps, so they're setting a preference. It seems like most players would prefer a higher frame rate than a higher native resolution, so this makes perfect sense.

Someone explain this to me like I'm 5. Isn't the Pro supposed to have a DLSS-like solution for FPS? Is it really that outlandish to expect 60 fps for lots of titles? I'm out of my depth here.

As per the article, it's the same as the PS4 Pro Boost mode. It just uses the extra power for games with variable framerates and dynamic resolution. It'll just run closet to the max on those cases.

So no, no Bloodborne at 60fps yet.
