Question fellas. What is the difference between trance, house, and electronic stuff?

I have a lot of artists on my Pandora, but I don't know what genres they fall into. Armin, Tiesto, OceanLab, Madeon, etc.

Well trance, house, dubstep, etc fall into Electronic, aka EDM.

It's hard to describe the differences between all of the different genres. For me, trance is very melody focused, and it just sounds...beautiful.

House is party focused, fast beats, "fun" sounds like beeps and buzzers I guess, and is generally more chaotic sounding.

All of what you listed is pretty much trance, at least if it's old Tiesto. A general example of house is LMFAO songs like Party Rock, or Gangnam Style to an extent if you want pop examples. Notice the difference between those and something like Oceanlab?

Believe me. Trance music was my world. It still is. I have just moved on to other music now that still gives me that feeling I had with the old Trance music. I used to stay at home for A State of Trance back in the day, went to parties where Armin would spin solo, before the big crowd even knew who he was. I breathe Trance music. Still think about it all day, everyday, when I wake up. I make music myself, Trance is still important to me. Me and a friend would go the vinyl shop every week, and hunt down the new tunes that were not ID'ed yet, or just the new tracks that were pure bliss. Music is still important to me. It has given me so much. So much. But not today's music what is being called 'Trance', while it really has nothing to do with Trance in any way. I'm sorry. So yes, for me the new Armin does suck.

I came in late to this convo so maybe I missed some of it. However, do you have an explicit example of the old, "good" Armin compared to the newer mainstream stuff today? Or is simply listening to an older set above compared to a new episode of ASOT today good enough?

I was actually having a conversation with a coworker friend today and she told me she doesn't really care for Armin anymore because the music isn't as good. He's become too mainstream, she said. I like the sets I've heard, so I'm pretty oblivious to the shift he's made.

Yes, listening to some old sets alone would be sufficient, DJ wise that is. If you listen to old tracks that were produced by him, you should hear the difference between old producer Armin/new producer Armin. Stuff like 'Sunburn' or his 'Seven Cities' remix, stuff like that.

I recorded this on a tape while listening to a local trance radio show.Loved this for years and get to know the name\artist only in 2005 (5 years later).
It still is quite often in my playlists. Great,great masterpiece.

A good friend of mine surprised me by gifting me VIP tickets to Armin for my birthday. Needless to say, I'm stoked, but I haven't been the biggest fan of Armin's recent output. I've been listening to him for over a decade and he's by far my favorite DJ, so I'm holding onto hope that several of his classic tracks will make it into his set.

P.S. Who's going to the very first American Sensation White this month? I was thinking about making an OT if there's enough interest.

When that beat kicks back in at 3:20, it pulls out some deep feelings from me. Almost a sad haunting kind of melody, but I love it. All of the Gouryella tracks are amazing. I wish Ferry and Tiesto could reunite and make some new sounds together, I doubt it would be anything as special as the classic ones though.

That looks like an amazing set, will have to download and have a listen when I've got a lot of time, I did have the privilidge of seeing Armin do an 8 hour set around this time, bloody brilliant he was

Wait..what? It's the same thing as calling rap, hip hop. It's not JUST EDM, it's a part of EDM. I dont see anything wrong with it. It's not like people say, "no that's not trance, that's EDM!" At least nobody that I've heard.

In the process of listening to Universal Religion Chapter 6. I see what you're saying about the changes in trance, but you know, you cant help it. They want to make money and stay relevant with the big crowds.

Now saying that, Armin does a fantastic job of trying to keep it alive in the mainstream. There are hints of trance bliss in practically every one of these songs I've listened to so far. Amazing set, that crowd he recorded this for is extremely lucky.

Ok I'm almost at the end of Disc 1, and all I have to say is that this is the best set I have ever heard. Each song is an absolute monster with amazing trance (well, trance to me) beats.

Have you heard it tr4nce? I'm curious to what you think of it. If it's far off from what you call trance.

I still enjoy a lot of his newer stuff. Maybe more than his older stuff. His set from Ibiza recently was great.

Am I the only trancehead on GAF going to Sensation White New York this month? C'mon, it's the first North American Sensation White! Sure, it won't compare to Dutch SW's of past (2000-2005 was a magical time), but I have to experience it for myself.

Yeah, why isn't this in LA? :/ I'm itching to go to another good show. I missed Aly & Fila and Escape from Wonderland is out for me this year, so I'm not sure what I'm going to next. Maybe Markus Schulz at Avalon.

God I hate club shows. Did you miss Armin at the Palladium? Myon & Shane are at Exchange in November, other than that I don't think there are any shows worth going to.

I saw Armin. He was great. Admittedly I was all over the club with friends so I didn't dance that much (too hot on the dance floor!). It was fun though.

No, I haven't heard this. To be honest I just listened to a very small preview, but it didn't do anything for me. Ofcourse, if I were to give my opinion, I would need to listen to the whole thing so I can give an honest and fair opinion. But I can't be bothered right now :)

As a long time fan from the US, I much prefer EDM (or electronic dance music) to the alternatives "electronica" or ignorant people just grouping everything in to "techno". Easier to tell people I like EDM than run off "house", "techno", "progressive", "nu-disco", "trance", "garage", "drum & bass", "downtempo", "electro", "breaks", "dubstep", "minimal", "2-step", etc.

Lineup doesn't really seem very trancy at all! (based on what I've seen... unless you've heard different... the page is blocked at work so I'm relying on google). That said I like Joris Voorn and would be curious to hear a Dennis Ferrer set... but am VERY short on funds at the moment. Washing machine, dryer, garage door opener and car decided to break on me in a single week :p
