And that might be the problem - I'm approaching this game as a rebadged ST6, and we know how dead that series is :|
I'm not.

This game looks far more developed in the right parts and not as strong in the parts that made Sakura Taisen. The ARMS system was basic essentially because it was an aside for the theatrical story and ADV plotline. That looks to be the total opposite in Valkyrie of the Battlefield's case.

Same with the characterizations, I expect them to be fully developed as much as a JRPG would, but not to the ADV-style extent in ST.

I expect the game to draw influences from the ST games in terms of execution and thematic design, but the actual game and system to be much more Sega JRPG-like.

Is the bottom-left movie on the website new? It has the voice acting and sets up the story a little bit.

This looks so great and it's a srpg and sofar no plans to put it outside japan... I got to admit Sega... You are good at failing in new and special ways...

The 'H' stands for hentai.

Well, Sega has a more westernized focus nowadays.

Maybe this game is too Japanese for them?

Updated OP with images and box arts.

The box art isn't too great, but I know they will find a way to screw up the USA release (if there ever was one).

I bet it would be a big black cover that says "Gallian Chronicles" with some stupid lens flare and maybe a generic tank.

Graphic style makes me a bit keen to unearth my Derwents box from school and shade something.

What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that this game is too charming for this world.

I like it, good change in color. They could have made it more striking but it seems to fit.

I'm pretty sure this game won't play like Sakura Taisen in the least bit. I believe this game will end up playing somewhat a mix between Ring of Red and Front Mission Alternative (both of which ended up mediocre due to poor execution of great ideas). In fact, I'm almost willing to bet on it based on the screen shots of the troop training/equipments/R&D screens.

While I absolute love the art direction of this game, and most of the character designs... I just don't see this game having as much appeal in terms of characterization and story, at least not to the level of Sakura Taisen.

I really hope they pull it off, as I have fairly immense expectations for the direction this game is going towards. If only there was a SRPG that required the intense planning of FFT and the tactical aspect of Jagged Alliance or Fallout Tactics, with a dose of interesting Steampunk backstory, this is the game that can potentially fulfill all of them.

Please transelate this game. But going by Sakura Taisen, I guess it will not be transelated.
Didn't EGM have the game listed for fall?

yes, as a rumor

Fall 08:

FFXIII
The Agency
Socom: Confrontation
inFamous
Afrika
Killzone 2
Yakuza Kenzan
White Knight Chronicles
Valkyrie on the Battlefield

eh... I don't believe all of them.

There are a few games lately that I am afraid we'll not see outside of japan:
EO2
Soma Bringer
newest Tales game for DS
Valkyrie of the Battlefield
Ryu Ga gotoku Kenzan

... I thought the horrible days of Sega Saturn were over :-( (Horrible yet awesome, but Shining Force III chapter 2&3, Grandia, Dragon Force 2, ect. where are you?)

Don't go by that. Go by something like Shining Force EXA.

In other words... SoA: what's this moon language? Gah, just give it to some cheap anime dubbers and call it a day.

On a totally different note, I believe I have a good idea of how the story of this game will go, after reading the world backgrounds on the website.

So you're giving me hope? checking wikipedia, that game was released outside japan. Not in Europe though. But if the same things happens to Valkyrie, then atleast the ps3 is region free.

Stop getting me excited!

Hopefully they will. There is almost no competition in this genre on next gen HD in the US. The only thing I can think of is Disgaeia (sp?).

On the flip side US ps3 owners haven't really been supporting anything that is not a shooter.

This gen Sony has more shooters than ever before though. RFoM, UT3, CoD4, Orange Box, Turok, Time Shift, and Haze is still to come out. I know that's not all that's out there, but it seems to be the majority right now. I think the other games take a advertizing back seat in the US.

Folklore for example, is an amazing game, but no advertizing to speak of for it, not even in magazines. The lack of rpg's sucks too.

Yeah, but those games take time. The XBOX 360 didn't get its first good JRPG until Blue Dragon came out 2 years after launch.

The PS3 should be getting a bunch of good RPGs by the 2 year mark, like this one and White Knight Chronicles.

Finally had a chance to watch the video and here's more or less some more info on the game system itself.

The 7th platoon consists of 2 tanks (named Edelweiss and Shamrock) and 10 soldiers at the core. 50 characters to include into the platoon, so essentially 40 reserve soldiers as well. It appears that you can add atleast 22 members total in certain battle scenarios (1 tank + 3 members on the platoon list with a central box indicating 18 more soldiers can be added to the platoon list).

Points are earned post-battle and can be distributed to your platoon in any manner you see fit. Points are distributed to unit type (sniper unit, anti-tank unit, etc) so theoretically you can level up the bejeesus out of one particular unit type and have the remaining units be very weak.

All characters have personality traits, as well as "potentials" which are activated when certain conditions are met on the battlefield. I believe these are revealed as the character's respective units level up.

Character traits include: Sandstorm allergies, physically weak, hatred towards imperial citizens, etc.

Potentials include: Double damage to tanks, leadership, hymn/song of peace, etc

Breakdown of known trait/potentials by character

Alicia:
田舎育ち - raised in the countryside (while standing on dirt, concentration increases and shooting ability goes up)
世話好き - enjoys taking care of people
不可避射撃 - non-dodgeable shot

Largo
自然児 - somewhat uncivilized (when standing on pavement, becomes emotionally stressed and defense goes down)
救急アップ - improved first aid
仲間思い - group/companion affection
戦車の天敵 - tank predator/natural enemy of tank
戦車二重ダメージ - double damage to tanks

Rosie
砂塵アレルギー - sandstorm allergies (will gradually lose HP while fighting during sandstorms)
遮蔽射撃 - hidden assault
姉御肌- bossy disposition
地雷不発 - misfiring mine
不可避射撃 - non-dodgeable shot
平和の歌 - Sony/Hymn of Peace

Yeady(sp?)
リーダーシップ - leadership

Taris
女好き - likes women/womanizer/lesbian (I think this is a female character but it's hard to tell)

Karos
金属好き - metal fetish
寂しがり屋 - lonely/isolated

Homer
潔癖病 - fanatical
貧弱な体 - physically weak
寂しがり屋 - lonely/isolated

Oscar
草原育ち - raised in the plains
帝国人きらい - hatred towards Imperial citizen
夜目 - night vision

Unknown
気分屋 - acts on emotions

And finally, tanks can be upgraded with an emphasis on offense or defense (or a balance of both probably) and the design of the tanks will change according to the upgrades completed on them.

Some translations are awkward, and I apologize. I didn't want to spend all night finding the best translations, but I think these will convey the meanings relatively well.

Cheers.
