Wii - European launch

Denmark also faces supply problems. I preordered in a local EB a little more than two weeks ago (the 9th), and yet I'm only number 23 on the list - and this is a fairly small store. So, it looks like my girlfriend and I will be going out early on the 8th to search for one at toys'r'us etc. instead...

Denmark is pretty much SONY-land, and the GameCube was quickly phased out in most retail chains here. I did not expect this - I thought I was more than safe placing a pre-order a month in advance, but apparently not.

I totally understand how poor people are feeling right now. I am a big spender. Everything I buy is expensive. I have realised how wasteful of resources and money I am, and have been trying to spend very little money. But just can't do it. The more I try, the more mistakes I make. I get parking fines, speeding ticket, crashed my car a little, Bought 4 tubs of Haagen Dazs as it was on offer. I then had 2 people come to my house for dinner, so I bought some wine. They decided not to have wine. And I took the seal of them both. So can't even give it back. And because I just moved, I didn't have glasses, so I bought 4 of them too. Its like I keep making silly mistakes. I still eat good food, and buy quality products, but I try to think a little bit about it. Like I could do with M&S or GAP rather than Giorgio Armani. The quality is the same, its just cheaper. But people in Uni don't even buy that, they buy Topman and stuff. And during the summer I bought 50 games, and a GBM, I haven't even completed 1. So as much as I am a Nintendo supporter, no wii for mii, until at least I am not in the red, and I actually get a job, and complete 30 or so games. Although I'll prolly get zelda GC.

I saw a Wii remote advert last week on Kerrang, a Zelda one last night on Paramount Comedy 2 and another Zelda one this morning on Channel 4, plus you could win a Wii on Popworld. They seem to be covering all the bases, the Zelda ads I saw were both different, and both contained item spoilers, so you've been warned.

ToysRus in Sweden doesnt do preorders, so thats a hot tip for lining up. Dont expect too many hardcore gamers to think of that place.

Btw, how many Wii for Sweden??

7-8000 and one toys 'r' us store will get 3-4 consoles and the others will probably not get that many more so line up early if you want one. :lol

Yeah I'm ****ed up here in Norway. Final exam the day it's released, no chance at lining up - very limited supplies. I just hope and pray the second shipment comes soon enough.

Toys'R'Us wouldn't let me line up either. Perhaps later - otherwise I'll just line up early in front of it the 8th. (Denmark).

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
I think its more a problem in which City you are living.
Everybody is complaining about this and I am just thinking and remembering the DS-Lite launch, where I was going to a local store with a friend and bought my DSL on launch day as the first buying one. Oh and they dont even sell another DSL's the next 3 or 4 days.
Here are living approximately 260.000 people so its big enough that we get everything but so small that not enough people care about this ;)
I think I am going to the store on december 7th (they might have it earlier) or then on the 8th and just buy it.

Where abouts you live?

Ireland. I'm gonna try the shops as soon as it comes out - Toys R Us, Virgin, HMV, maybe some of the GAME's will have it. Ireland doesnt usually sell out like this, not for consoles anyway.

Err.. I'm pretty sure they will have Wiis for sale in Austria?

No problem in Poland. I preordered mine just yesterday, gonna go to the shop at 8am on Friday and get my lovely Wii.

But the shop manager told me many people are interested in a Wii, so it's not so obvious they'll last.

Still, even if I won't buy it there, there's always MediaMarkt. Wii, second controler and Zelda, here I come, babies!

Is it absolute insanity to believe that one will be able to just walk into a store (in the UK) around Xmas and buy a Wii?

Stealth Edit: Xmax... :lol

Volmer, I'm not sure I want my Wii anyway. I was the 2nd to preorder so I'm guaranteed a console. PM me if you live in Copenhagen.

Watching TMF or JIMtv late at night is fanastic. All commercials are about consoles or games. A lot of singstar and eyetoy for PS2, some for X360 and it's games, some for pc-games, gta for PSP, DSlite touch generations commercial, and a Wii commercial (the same as the Japanese "what's this? It's the Wii controller" commercial).

The fact that there is a Wii commercial on Belgian tv blows my mind. Nintendo was virtually dead here just one year ago. (Although, the consistent commercials for the DSlite were an indication that Nintendo Belgium would spend some money on advertising their new product.)

I preordered mid september in gamestation in glasgow, scotland and they say Im guaranteed a wii now, despite being number 32 in the queue, and a week ago when I asked they had started taking preorders again. Doesn't seem ot be a supply problem
here.
hmm i stay near glasgow and im wondering if I should I use my first ever paypacket to buy a Wii? I think I will!

Movies & Games (small Belgian shop) is expecting 25-30 Wii's at launch, at least. No major supply problems here, so I should receive my Wii at December 8th (or Wednesday o/). :)

Anyone have any ideas how hard will it be to get on in Switzerland on launch day?

My mother works in an ExLibris Store. She says they let you preorder a Wii now. They will only get 3 Systems at launch, but nobody preordered so far.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to buy one there, since they give you a two years warranty too.

Does anyone know how many units Gamestation will be getting?

I asked in the GAME in the Gafton shopping centre (Cambridge) regarding software (Zelda in particular)/accessories and they said they'd have a healthy supply with more than enough to go around, compared to the less than satisfactory supply in America.

Some lucky chap who missed out on an Amazon UK pre-order is hopefully going to get his Wii ordered in a few mins, let me know if it's you :)

Heads up - there's a rumour in Poland (I have no idea where did it come from, so treat it just as that - a rumour), that MediaMarkt will be selling Wiis for 799 PLN (the normal price is 1099 PLN), that's exactly $100 less than the normal price.

:( I feel for you. Hopefully they'll have some more available for the holidays.

When I pre-ordered mine (with Zelda) there was just me and another guy on the list. Updated my order to include an RGB cable yesterday, and it's now over 30 names there. I always assumed it was going to be a surplus available at launch here, but now it looks like absolute mayhem. The irony is that the biggest retailer (with the lowest prices) are doing no pre-orders whatsoever, forcing people to line up. Personally I'm content with paying a little more to avoid standing in line for hours.

(You know, this is not exactly the best country in the world for outdoors camping in December. :lol)

you got any numbers to go along with that? Are there issued enough to fill pre-orders?

Assuming you can read Norwegian: http://www.itavisen.no/php/art.php?id=358652 (definetly not the best place to get Nintendo news, but when the news they bring are bad, you know it's true :lol )

In the event that you can't: Demand far higher than supply. A major retailer recieves only 100 units to divide among their 19 outlets.

Where I pre-ordered, they could only guarantee that the top X people on the list (how many is unknown as of yet) would get one on launch day. People are actually preordering just to get one before the holidays now, by the look of things.

Itavisen has a very bad track-record when it comes to video-games news, and their 'interpretation' of them...

For instance they reported that half of the playstation library couldn't be played on ps3.

But shit me. 100 for Platekompaniet nationally? Platekompaniet in Stavanger doesn't even carry games though, so that doesn't concern me too much. I'm more worried about Spiderman/GAME, although they have gone seriously down hill after GAME bought them out. No imports :(

I don't know if it is already said in this thread.. but I saw for the first time a Wii commercial on Dutch tv yesterday at night. It's the one where the wii-mote is used to perform all kind of music instruments. And then a women would say something like this in Dutch "what is this for remote control? [pause] It's the new remote control for Wii!" :lol
Pretty dumb voice over, and I'm not sure if someone who doesn't know about Wii will know that you can do that stuff as if it whas real (playing tennis and such), by seeing that commercial. But hey, it was pretty cool to see an ad about 2.5 weeks before release in the Netherlands.

Here in Bergen they (Spiderman/GAME) have been selling "pre-order boxes" (that basically puts you on the pre-order list in exchange for a fee which is refunded when you buy the console) since September IIRC, so I would expect that the chances of successfully placing a pre-order there at this point in time are extremely slim.

Although the game and online stores will be swamped with pre-orders at this point, you might have better luck at toy stores (like Toys'r'us) or electronics stores that don't specialise in games (such as Expert).

As a last resort you could try lining up at Elkjøp or Lefdal (expect a huge line though, with campers and all). Alternately, ask around for pre-orders that haven't been picked up. Someone's probably pre-ordered in more than one place to be guaranteed a console, you never know.

I'll just try the supermarket across the street, last year I couldn't pre-order my X360 and it was sold out in most places... but supermarkets, they stock 5-10 units max per system and don't take pre-orders so... I'll just walk in and get mine along with Zelda some tasty ice-cream for the week-end.

I'm going to line up at Elkjøp in Molde about two hours before opening. Doing it with a friend and my cousin. Last year when we lined up for X360, they had over 40 units so everyone in line (~30) got one. Btw, any Norwegians know what the price is? I've heard 2300 which is a bit of a scandal really as you can get the X360 tard for 1899 now. :lol

Thanks to god i've preordered my Wii, there is nearly no chance to get one without a preorder here in Germany. Amazon was sold out in just a few mins...

Haha, not a bad plan. Kinda like Japanese convenience stores I guess...

But no regular game store loyalty (read: f**k me in the rear) points to spend, and not much chance of decent deals/bundles = crying in a heap next to the cereal aisle.

360 tard under 2k?

But if all pre-orders are filled in Spiderman/GAME, I'm just gonna leech on my friend who pre-ordered early. Is it gonna cost 2300 though? That seems wrong. :\

Right does anyone know if it's true there's gonna be a midnight launch at Oxford Sts (London) HMV? I've heard rumours, but nothing totally concrete.

According to my Gamestation, Nintendo have promised them as many units as they get preorders. I'm #73 in there last I checked and they were still confident I'd get one.

Hello Adam! It's Max, fancy seeing you here.

:lol

HMV staff have said the planned event is now in doubt, as police have advised against it, saying they're worried about the security of sending hundreds in to the streets of London after midnight with expensive hardware and no tubes running.

But HMV hasn't decided if they're gonna go ahead anyway yet.

With that avatar, I knew it was someone I probably knew. :lol I finally decided to join here after finding an e-mail address that'd actually work.

Hmm shame about the launch, since I don't wanna pre-order so late as I don't trust it, and well, I'm an impatient git and wanted to try and get hold of one as soon as possible... Plus, it means going to bed late instead of getting up early!

Is it worth getting a SCART cable for the Wii? I've never bothered with cables before, I've not had a problem with how GC games look on composite or anything, but if it does make enough difference then why not? Worth the £18?

Anyone have comparison shots of GC games or anything on composite and SCART?

yeah, always get the scart cable. I never play without one! You brits get the cable cheap too! I'm considering importing mine from either Germany or Britain as the cable is £32 in Denmark.

Cool, thanks. Are SCART cables standard or will I have to get the official one? I suspect the latter, but I'm sure I could steal one off a DVD player or something if not.

If you mean RGB cable then you'll have to buy one separately, the Wii comes equipped with just a composite cable. There is quite a difference, close to composite compared to component, it's especially noticeable on text.
