There are other words too!
For me one of the strongest arguments in favour of 'Skell' is that it doesn't evoke anybody else's mech. It evokes Xenoblade. As of today, it's unmistakable. And the only reason the word might seem arbitrary now is that we have yet to play the bloody game. (And yes, by the way, this was also the argument for Doll. What kind of mechs did 'Doll' evoke? Only Xenoblade's. But Skell is less conspicuously translated from Japanese, and its lesser-known double meanings fit the scenario of the game.)
I don't see the point of framing expectations based on genre conventions of what everyone else is doing. It pays to stand apart and claim new territory. That's what writers are for.
I will take my ideas to the Treehouse.I want to fly my T.I.T.S. all over Mira while I battle enemy B.R.A.s
What? How dare you rip off gundam!?Also that breakdown sounds really stupid stupid. Which series was that one from?
Wow, talk about a localization failThere are other words too!
Gundam Seed Destiny. They cheated a lot with their acronyms.
Wow, talk about a localization fail
In that case, assumption fail on my part! That wasn't a localization
Oh. No wonder I don't remember, I wiped that garbage from memory. That series cheated with a lot more than acronyms, like, death, who the main character is, super powers, magic, beam spam that somehow hits more things than there are beams, etc.

Skell is simple and strong. Easy to say, and easy to remember. And it's iconic.
Not seeing the problem, but I guess this was the only new news they gave us today, so discuss it we will.
I will take my ideas to the Treehouse.

OKIt's not iconic to me at all. It's a word I will never, ever use while talking about Xenoblade except to say that I dislike it. I will just call them Mechs and everyone will still know what I'm talking about and I won't be saying an awful word.
Ha, happy to hear it :-DLMFAO! Damn near woke my cousin up after reading this!
I wonder how people felt about the Monado the first time they heard it.
In an alternate reality where these games were revealed in reverse order, I'm sure people on GAF are bitching about it being called "the Monado," with some saying "It doesn't evoke a badass blade," and others saying it should be called the "lightsaber" or "Master Sword"I wonder how people felt about the Monado the first time they heard it.

What was the Japanese name?

It's like the classic Dr. Seuss book, "The Sneetches and Skell-Bellied Sneetches"Huh. There are people flipping over to a word on a videogame.

And Nintendo's bizarre refusal to release anything during summer continues. The lack of a release date announcement pretty much confirms that it will be a holiday title.

Man... I just don't know about Xenoblade Chronicles X yet. I used to be excited for it, and I still want to be, but the more I learn and think about it the less happy I am with the direction they're taking this game in compared to the original.
The "create-an-avatar" main character, the lack of focus on the narrative and characters (compared to the original XC), being based in reality, the so-edgy-I-could-cut-myself rap theme for normal battles... more and more, I'm thinking this game might just not be for me.
Any other fans of the original game possibly finding themselves in this camp? Note that I'm not trying to say "this game looks crappy" or that I don't understand why others are still hyped for it. It looks fantastic, it's just that it looks fantastic in several ways that don't appeal to me personally, especially coming from the previous game. It seems to be even more rooted in WRPG design philosophy than the original game was, but the original still had that all-important JRPG focus on a strong, linear story and characters.
Of course it's too early to say for sure, but I don't think my feeling this way is a coincidence. Even MonolithSoft has said they're intentionally focusing less on story and characters in XCX compared to XC.
I'm hoping I'm wrong and that I end up loving this game to death, but I don't know. It's not looking likely right now.
Thoughts?
I brought up these same concerns on the previous page. Did you not see the story trailer released couple days ago???
Seems very narrative to me

So I'm more confident in the characters, although like you, I would personally prefer a defined lead like Shulk, over the create-a-character lead we're getting.
Still not sure what to think of the overall premise, or whether there will be a strong enough plot structure to maintain a sense of momentum. The world sure looks incredible, though.
Hey man, Sawano's gotta eat. You expect him to NOT recycle his music from project to project? Asking for a lot aren't we?
Like one day a month, I think like you do. Here's what I think it is. Everything that we're seeing on the game is pure gameplay. We're not seeing the story or the whole picture. You get a 25 minute gameplay explanation, systems upon systems and it's easy to focus on that stuff.
But then you hear from the reviews that there are a ton of cutscenes and that what they've shown looks like something straight out of Xenogears/saga. It seems like they're really holding back and trying to push the gameplay pieces of it. Am I going in a little bit nervous? Yeah I am, but I also think that everything will probably turn out pretty all right.

Hmm, that's good to hear (I think). On the Treehouse Live stream, they were skipping a lot of cutscenes, as well. They said they wanted to avoid story spoilers. Two of famitsu's reviewers actually said the game has too many of long cutscenes. Combine that with the existing story trailers and I'm pretty sure the game has a heavy narrative focus like the original, even if it's presented in a different context. I'm pretty sure Monolith is just keeping most of the story details to themselves because they don't want to spoil the plot in their trailers.
This reminds me of when Nintendo announced the name "Wii". A bunch of people were claiming they would never call it by such an awful name and would continue to refer to it as the "Revolution". That didn't last too long...

OK now settle downTotally different situation. Mechs are the common, generic name for them regardless. In any game/series they're all still mechs, no matter what someone comes up with. A Gundam/Mobile Suit is still a Mech, a Gear is still a mech, AWGS are still Mechs, a Metal Gear is still a Mech. A Skell is still a Mech and many people will call them mechs, hell even their own team couldn't get used to calling them Skells and still called them Mechs and corrected themselves over and over. You'll have plenty of people here calling them Mechs.
You should read the Japanese reviews, Dengeki is the more through since the reviewer actually played the whole game.Thoughts?
What kind of name is CAAAAAAAAAAAW anyways? You guys have watched the Japanese translated videos right? I mean I seriously don't get how you guys expect to get a sense of the character's personalities if you can't even understand what they're saying. Every single video has been translated by two very dedicated individuals, those being Gessenkou (or CAAAAAAAAAAAW as he's known here)
