Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

Sorry everybody.

Now that I got my Platinum, you don't have to worry about me ruining anything else lol.

But I apologize for my ignorance. I will keep this in mind when posting screencaps going forward.

Wow, you got a little triggered there, didn't you buddy?

Are you seriously supporting something that mechanically makes no sense? That's a matter of trying everything possible randomly? Let me tell you something, even adventure games have moved from the "try every item on everything interactable" trope.

And Banjo Tooie is my favorite game ever and it did have some puzzles that eventually would just randomly get solved, but it wasn't a matter of trying every single mechanic possible.

On YL's case not only you have to turn invisible but you also have to stand on the light and CROUCH. Most arbitrarily random mechanic ever.

I'm telling you I don't deserve this artificial type of difficulty that relies on something as illogical as that. If you think you do, to each its own I guess.

Yeah, nothing triggers me like a lazy retort saying something 'makes literally no sense at all' I guess, like I had been writing in an indecipherable alien language. Then I read it again and realized you meant the puzzle. Sorry man ;)

Maybe I do have a non-sensical mind though, cause reflecting the laser with my suspiciously reflective looking camo cloak was one of the first things I tried. Come on, it's not a gigantic leap of logic. Kazooie had way, waaay worse.

I find it very cool that little puzzles like that exist in the game and not all of them are spelled out for you by a nearby npc. Sue me.

I just got the game!! Will start it tomorrow, any advice or something i should know about?

Take care around would 4, and backup your save before playing it if possible - there's currently a bug whereby the Pagie count ends up lower than it should be, preventing 100%ing the game. Playtonic are aware and it'll be fixed in the next patch, but we don't yet know when that will be or whether its'll have retrospective effect.

Reflecting using the cloak makes sense but the fact you have to crouch to do it while cloaked it rather obtuse.

yeah, i puzzled out the cloak on my own but figured out the crouch half on pure accident. it didnt feel like an aha moment so much as a "oh, i guess this is it". if there was more visual feedback when you were cloaked and standing in a laser, like if yooka started shimmering or something, i think thatd be clue enough youre on the right track and to start experimenting without outright telling you what to do.

Whoever thought on world 3 it would be fun to basically turn into a dung beetle and have to roll shit through a maze with 100% unresponsive controls and a too short timer, you need to find another career. Game design isnt for you. Seriously want to put this game away for a long time because of this. You dont do shit like this if your controls are unresponsive total shit for that section. Seriously you need a new career.

EDIT-- Wow....just figured out on accident that if you have the tongue stick move, you can grab the shitballs with O and then just drag them to the holes with plenty of time to spare. Hope this tip saves someone the aggravation ive been going through.

Cool but aggravating that they didnt tell you how to do this which makes this a piece of cake.

Drag them around with Yooka's tongue.

If you're talking about the seeds in the mushroom patch...

Use Lizard Lash.

Edit: Beaten.

If it's the section I'm thinking of you can use your tongue to drag the seeds with a lot more precision.

So I have a question that I could probably google but I'm scared of giving too much away. Slight spoilers, I guess.

I have unlocked the first 4 worlds (Tribalstack, Glacier, Swamp and Casino). My understanding is there is a fifth world, but the only bit of the map I've found so far that I haven't traversed is the big door which you need 100 pagies to enter. Is that for world five or am I right in suspecting that is the final boss and World 5 is somewhere else?

Whats throwing me is I think Trowzer said the flight move is my last one, so maybe it is the final world? Help?

EDIT: Oh, jeez, its right there. I'm an idiot. Never mind.

That's the final boss.

If you want tips on how to get to world 5,
you have to use flight ability to get there
, if you want more specifics on how to get there
you must traverse the poison filled tunnel right before the door to the world 4 area, I'm pretty sure Trowser's there?

Cheers. I managed to find the really obvious opening to where it was straight after posting that, I must've just missed it my first time through.

Just beat the final boss (took four tries).
It's so awful.

I don't mind losing, but a lot of the damage I took was to dumb stuff, and that ain't right.

(SPOILERS FOR THE FIGHT)
-Sometimes if Yooka lands in the wrong spot after delivering a hit, he'll get hurt during a phase transition. This usually happens during phases 3-6.
-Sometimes he's pushed into the ooze after a successful hit.
-Sometimes he gets caught under the boss's flailing arms while trying to deliver a hit.

The second phase could stand to be a little shorter or simply dropped entirely.
Phases 3-6 would benefit from being somewhat condensed as well.
Phase 7 is mostly just annoying. YK will run out of energy at least 2-3 times.

Compared to the rest of the game, the final boss is a massive uptick in difficulty. Granted, it's not near as bad as...say...Wily in Megaman 7, but it's still a headscratcher.

^^ oh that's just great, I'm about to do the last boss =/

On a similar note, just to confirm, is the only thing that you get for obtaining all pagies
a costume for yooka
? There is no extra story content beyond the minimum 100 pagies?

in world 2 is an abomination. Like not far from did you guys even playtest this territory. Obviously that's hyperbole but I can't remember the last time I encountered something in a game that controlled this poorly.

World 5 is such a drag. I was enjoying them all pretty whole-heartedly, but
flight
just feels like it breaks the game and world 5 feels entirely disconnected because it was designed around it.

Approaching the end at this point and I'd say World 3 was my favorite content-wise, and world 2 was my favorite visually.

I found 102 pagies and went to Capital B. Had two attempts before ditching the game
(got to the second section where you have to try and hit him with ice berries (which are timed), while he's floating (so you have to try and aim and him while in the air, and while infinitely respawning enemies swarm you on the ground, while avoiding his attacks. fuck this shit and the several more stages of the shit with no butterflies.
. It is rare for me to swear so much at a single player game so I'm done.

So here are my final thoughts on this game:

Liked:
-The characters where mostly fun. Yooka and Laylee where nice enough but lacking in personality. I think Trowzer had the most personality in the whole game. And the shopping carts and the guys in the casino.
-The music is just great. Even if it isn't a live orchestra and in some levels sounds like a demo compared to what most synth orchestras sound like today (you won't even know its all samples in most games with orchestral scores). Its so refreshing to have a game like this with an unashamedly melodic score.
-General look of the game is one of its strengths. It's a low budget game that seems to be mostly punching above its weight.
-When you can ignore the way its delivered, some of the dialogue is really well done.

Hated:
Bosses start off as cunt-like (Rampo the Cunt) and by the end, I was actively skipping them (never did the boss for Cashino and game up on the Galleon boss and Capital B).
Tasks that involve juggling 4 or 5 things at once that are so inflexible that you'll end up with a cheap death
-general jank. The camera, and controls in some situations, no lock on
-bad design designs: timing of the berries was terrible. I know they built a lot of gameplay around that but in fact it makes the game so much less fun to play. a lock on targeting system should be useful for combat situations
-miserly checkpoints, stingey health in some situations like later bosses
-when one of more of these hated elements add up to make a compound of misery (gloomy Grotto, most of the bosses)
- the voices. just ugh. One or two grunts per sentence should do, not every fucking word.
-the UI. Having to dismiss text with the same button as accepting something was a pain.

Basically the jank and the slavish devotion to recreating warts and all versions of Banjo Kazooie, Tooir, DK64 era platformers conspire to make a game tha can be summed up with one word: unforgiving

So that's it for me. I'm glad I backed this but I can't see me replaying this or necessarily chipping in for a crowdfunded sequel. But I would play one if it addresses a lot of what I disliked about this.

Just started, got 7 pagies so far and I'm really enjoying the game. The controls are a bit rough in the arcade game I played but I got two pagies from it on my first shot each time so I guess I can't complain too much.

Voices are very annoying though. I do wish there was a way to make them optional.

This is basically my feeling on the game. Even with the janky controls (something about the interactions and movement in the game just feels "cheap" to me, like the physics were just some generic asset pulled off the Unity store and not custom built for the game), I really liked the intro level, but the two levels I have played since then have been real trash.

My son likes the look of the characters, so I'm continuing to play for him, but the whole thing is just kind of aggravating to play after a certain point.

And, yeah, those voices are just irritating. It honestly sounds broken.

Oh, and fuck the quizzes. Seriously, who thought that nonsense, with the crawling text that can't be skipped and annoying voice work, would be fun for anyone?

Alll the hate for Cashino is weird. I get thinking its silly to have to exchange stuff for pagies but the overall aesthetic, music, layout, is awesome. I guess it helps I love Vegas and casino stuff in general.

I've been reading about this game but I can't really get a handle on whether it is worth buying.

The things I love about these sorts of games seem to be shortcomings.

Should I get it?

Speaking as someone who loved Kazooie and Tooie, I still really enjoyed the game. I'd say it's worth it if you like collectathons like those.

Just ordered this!
Despite the criticisms I'm still really looking forward to it, I've loved everything I've seen of the game so far in videos. I replayed both BK games a year or so ago and still really enjoyed them so I feel pretty prepared to face the jank and crappy camera

Finally taken down Capital B! He's certainly a challenge, though I found perhaps not to the same extent that I've seen mentioned at times. Much of the fight comes down to using the right moves, plus the fast power recharge tonic

Phase 1 is trivial with Sonar 'Splosion to take out the bees.
Phase 2 is just fairly long, but so long as you keep gliding there's not much risk of taking damage while attacking.
Phase 3 (or 3-6, if splitting out the four similar parts) is fairly trivial with Sonar Shield, plus Sonar 'Splosion to take out the bees.
Phase 4 (or 7) is the only one that I found myself struggling with a bit, once having to deal with more that one missile at once - I still can't quite get to a place where the flight controls are completely intuitive..

So, that's 144/145 Pagies (the Cashino glitch got me, so I'm waiting for a - hopefully retrospective - patch there) and 1,010/1,010 quills... now I just need to go and find the Pirate Treasure that I've read about and I'm done (is this referenced anywhere in game if you don't know that it's there?). Overall I've enjoyed my time with the game, even if it's not quite all that it could have been. I'd certainly look forward to a sequel if Playtonic go in that direction.

The camera really can be a pain at times, but it's not been a big deal for me. The minigames so far have been the only thing to frustrate me.

Yeah, camera is mostly ok, except in some instances. If your used to the old games, it shouldn't be a major issue.
