Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim PC |OT| - Re-Release of the Far West Ocean

Finally playing the game. Some thoughts:

Started on Nightmare/Catastrophe. At first I kinda regretted because enemies where killing me in two hits (and that plant already start with a multiple hit attack that poisons), but after getting a few levels I was fine with it.

Relatively early on, but by far my most loved thing is the Wind Sword. I don't think I ever liked a weapon in a Falcom game as much as I like this sword. The fact that you get rewarded with massive DPS potential if you don't mash is fantastic, I love it. The timing is also easy enough to learn and still keep me paying attention to my attacks.

Also, the first boss was too hyped up in this thread for me =P, I ended up dying two or three times until I learned how to dodge his fire, and then it was a piece of cake.

I also hope I can't win against Geis the first time, because I ate shit.

Lastly, some things I didn't quite enjoy were some enemies (those scarab spider crab whatever things in the first dungeon were pretty annoying =X, although I just blaze through them now). Also the giant version of that enemy at the end of the dungeon was a little unnecessary imo =X (had to redo the entire dungeon because I thought I could kill it).

And some of the backtracking is a little annoying. But I actually don't mind that as much thanks to the colored enemies, wind sword and knowing that I'll eventually get a fast travel.

Also, I enjoy how often NPC dialogue changes, and I'm a little mixed on how little the game gives you to move on. Right now I'm not even sure where I'm supposed to go lol. Maybe just a little more of an indication, and I would enjoy it way more.

And beaten. 15 hours.

Ernst I got lucky with rather than beat clean, as it was still a complete bullethell mess I got some good looks in on him dashing with rather than mastering the fight. The end end boss went down much smoother the "correct" way by being the decisive flow of thought into action the boss fight required.

I really didn't like that escort mission, as their AI lead them to push right into you, which meant right into a charging soldier for comparibly huge chain damage. "You're a priestess, why can't you heal!?!!?" :p

Music was some real 100% Falcom goodness, complementing the red-haired, red-ass beatdowns of the gameplay splendidly.

Mighty Obstacle

Windslash Steps

Mountain Zone

Black Ark Unveiled

I especially liked the last one as it's so unlike the rest of the music, selling the alien hyper-technology of the last area like a champ.

First Ys game beaten, felt good. 8.0

You know, having played quite a while I have a question about the bosses:

Are they supposed to hit hard?

The last two (
wall/arm thing and the giant frog
) deal a ton of damage. This is despite having what I assume is the highest gear at the time and having a decent level. I don't remember bosses in Felghana or Origin being like this (might be memory issues, tho :p).

Also, about the boss I mentioned above...
is the giant frog supposed to be weak against the lightning attack? I actually had to google for that one as my attacks barely dealt any damage.

I figure it was to counteract the 9 of an item you could have plus the general HOLY BALLS THIS IS IKARUGA SHIT WTF often going on if you ain't got a proper battleplan going and executing upon it.

And yes, Felghana has lower damage pound for pound really.

Yeah, if you're playing on Catastrophe I think it's more apparent since you can't heal.

I've been dying more than I was in Felghana during bosses.

Then forget to upgrade your armor while also not using healing items :p That was my first playthrough of Napishtim. IIRC Orjugan killed me in 3-4 hits.

Soo, kinda late but I finally found out what caused my sound bugs in Ys VI games:

evilqes0w.jpg

I was starting Ys Origin for the first time since I got that sound card today and got the same sound bugs as in Ys VI. In Ys Origin I could reproduce them far better though (sound would cut out after each Arena round), so I decided to record my gameplay via NVIDIA ShadowPlay and share it here in case any Xseed devs still read the thread. After recording I noticed that my recording completely missed any sound. I googled around a bit and found an old thread on some NVIDIA forum where lots of people with my sound card complained about recordings missing sound. One poster recommended disabling the circled feature to fix this. I did that and started the game to rerecord the (100% reproducable!) bug. Except it wasn't there anymore <3

tl;dr: If you have sound bugs in Ys VI engine games and an ASUS Xonar (DGX) Sound Card, disable "GX" in the menu of your sound card.

Getting to the final stretch. The first boss in the Ark has a pretty hype battle theme. Too bad I'm pretty certain I'm underleveled or should power up a sword. Thank Alma I chose to make a 2nd save at the end of Kishgal.

FINISHED!

Now that was a great game. I actually enjoyed the simpler mechanics compared to Felghana and Origin, or maybe I just ended up becoming used to them. I tried launching the two afterwards and they felt so different...

The game is a bit rough in terms of pacing (did anyone else feel it wrapped up too quickly?), but really, Ys games are just so much fun it's easy to forgive. Glad to finally have played this. One can wish Seven or Celceta eventually receives official PC ports in the future.

Two things, though...

1.
Did anyone else find the final boss easy? Perhaps my maxed out gear and being lv 50 ensured that.

2.
What the heck was the eyeball thing in the glass tube in Ruins of Lost Time? It even showed up in the intro, yet played no part!

The game definitely goes by quicker when you have the Wings of Alma to teleport to save points. Probably cuts the overall length in half.

Started earlier and I'm through the ruins now.

One thing that is a bit weird is that with the Wings of Alma, you can see where future teleport locations will be because they are selectable even when you haven't visited them, and there is no marker on the map yet.

Didn't it?

Eh, maybe the game was rushed and they actually intended to use it for something but ran out of time/changed their minds.
o_o

I never drew that connection. In fact, I now decided to read up on the lore and it's all really... amazingly well-connected throughout all the games. Can't really speak for Celceta or Seven, though, as I haven't played them. At least the former seems to be connected?

Jeez, so Napishtim seems to be the game that helps bind them all together. But it does so in a very subtle way, too. Such a smart move.

I thought this was the case at first, but on Nightmare difficulty you have to grind a bit now and then anyway, so it seems to work out to about the same honestly. On lower difficulties it probably makes more difference.

Up to the second to last boss, and it is the first one that is actually challenging and not just janky. The prior boss is a good example, the hitboxes on the fire are extremely wonky.

All in all that's about my opinion of the whole game - it's really good, but brought down by jank in the form of questionable design decisions. The dash jump, the lunge attack being used to reach a certain room, a lot of aspects to some of the boss designs. It's pretty amazing how big of an improvement Felghana is having been the next Ys game after this. It's fundamentally "Napishtim done right."

The weird hitboxes (and the fact that they work like a 2D game) is indeed weird, but stuff like the dash jump is not bad at all. It's rarely required for progression and it's not that hard to pull off. I'm actually enjoying the level design and platforming of this one more than Oath tbh.

Also, if the room you're talking about with the lunge attack is the same one I'm thinking of, then just using the electricity power to dash you there is waaay easier.

Anyway, starting the end of the game, what's up with
the boss being called "The Original Galbalan"? I mean, I did read that Galbalan originally came from here and then left the island, but what is the relation between the two? And why is Oath's Galbalan so much stronger?

From what I can surmise,
Galbas were created to be subservient to the humans who created them. However, the one called Galbalan proved to be too powerful and intelligent and fled to Felghana to escape "those who would control it". It grew to despise all humans as a result, hence running amok and having to be sealed by Genos and "the ones with white wings" on what would be later known as Genos Island. It seemed to desire returning one day to claim the "Black Ark" and unleash its full power. Real Galbas, however, hold no such desires and only live to serve their creators who've long since left Canaan. Ernst was a descendant of those humans and perhaps was able to control the Galba-Roa, hence why it protected him and the Ark.

Well, that's what I figure anyway.

Used my prior save and spent my 400000g on seeds of power and defense.

Probably a mistake. Ernst became dramatically easier but wasn't a total pushover, but the final boss certainly was. Only died once on it while I was trying to remember exactly how it worked. Second try I don't think I got below half health. I did use the special/magic attack things though, which feels almost like cheating since I was only playing on normal/catastrophe.

Next time I revisit this it will definitely be on hard mode, nearly all of normal mode was pretty easy, and most of the stuff that wasn't was jank shenanigans. Yes, Orjugan, you in particular.

Don't worry Orjugan, I still love you.
Killed him without getting hit on nightmare time attack. I admit the dark Adol attack is cheap when combined with bad timing, sometimes feeling like luck, but he more than makes up for it with the constant frenetic dodging of the other attacks, all of which are fully avoidable.
.

For a first time player I would strongly suggest hard, non-catastrophe. I found out that the first boss doesn't even have his trademark homing attack on normal, making him very boring. And by allowing healing you protect against getting stuck.

Oh man, this is one of those moments where I realize that not paying attention to the lore came back to haunt me =X

I like it though, despite the generic stories in the games themselves, the world of Ys is very good.

I still want to know how the Grattheos Talisman ends up in that island in Ys Seven.

Guess I'll be spending some time on research after I beat this game (and I'll probably replay Origins, because I can just feel all the connections that I'm not getting).

Didn't Baslam give you the Grattheos Talisman? He's from Altago in Afroca, so maybe he returned to Altago prior to 7's events and misplaced it or something.
What island was it found on again? Was it the one before Adol gets convicted? If so, didn't they say that a party was sent to that island?
not every key item you found HAS to be found in a treasure chest, that's just the gameplay method of acquiring them :p

You don't think there could be more than one?
Maybe. I guess that will be the reason if I can't find anything about it =P

The reason I think that it is the same though is because he does say he wants it back after lending it to you.

A party of merchants to a deserted island? I'm pretty sure they were talking about soldiers =P
Oh, and I know about the treasure chest thing, but I just wondered how it ended up there in the first place.
Although, considering it's a Talisman related to that temple, it could just be another one.

Started up the game again after a long while earlier today after finishing up TiTs, still had some cheevos left to do but was wary because of a known glitch that kept achivements from being counted towards the final one, and because there was a chance beating Majunuun wouldn't trigger the cheevo for it. But it turns out those have been fixed, and now after a bit more grinding for seeds and then beating that infernal cyborg rabbit thing I just have to beat the game on Nightmare to complete the list. Nice!

I noticed there's still some bugs to work out. I didn't see my completion time for Catastrophe mode Normal when I checked under New Game (they were all blank), so I quickly loaded up my save and beat it just for the record, but the completion time (15 hours or some such) was logged in under Catastrophe mode: Nightmare. Hilarious.

What level do you need to be for Majunun? I tried it at 49 and couldn't hurt it, while taking over 150 damage per hit. Thought about grinding to beat it, but I checked what kind of exp I was getting from enemies and decided against it, seemed like it would take forever.

Forever and a half.

I made it to Level 53 and bought maybe 20-25 seeds of each stat to buff up Adol (should have focused on just HP and Power, come to think of it). I was able to squeak by a win after a few tries... little bastard starts lobbing even more red lasers when its health is low, and more frequently. I just basically kept my distance and fired off electricity every chance I got (fully-upgraded Ericcil is a must). Took maybe 10 or so blasts before it went down. Since I was on Catastrophe I had to rely on that one-time-use accessory to keep myself alive long enough.

Just beat the game. Here's my wall of text on it. I played it on Nightmare/Catastrophe.

Small stuff first. The story is probably my favorite in an Ys game (it's not a high bar admittedly), and it showed me how actually deep the connections between the games are (now I need to spend some hours on a wikia or something), and I'm totally going to replay Origins after this (and maybe Oath afterwards).

Soundtrack is different and amazing. It reminded me of Ragnarok Online at times lol (not a bad thing in the slightest).

And now the big stuff. I'll start with what I liked.
Platforming in this game is a lot more fun than Origins/Oath and is the best platforming in an Ys game for me (the dash jump is also something that takes very little time to get used to). The level design was great and my biggest complain is that it was a little too small and short.

Fighting is probably my favorite too, just because I loved using every sword (using all the spin attacks, kiting enemies with Brillante and mashing it out to get a dash all feel great), the actual magics are pretty good and fun to use (I had no problems at all with how damaging the cave boss can only be done with magic). Biggest complain is that they become way too OP when you max them out (although Majunum was still a fun fight like that).

Boss fights in this game are both good and bad. Some bosses should have one or two attacks more (god that mountain boss, 2 out of 3 attacks takes him out of your range and those attacks are suuuuper long), and some bosses have one or two attacks too much (cave boss didn't really need the attack where he calls an add. And hey, let's put this frog boss that throws poison in the ground AND a thing that messes up your movement, and then make you dodge as he rolls around invisible and you have to deal with his adds).
But all in all, if they didn't mess up the hitboxes (why do I take damage from the frog's tongue AFTER he put the tongue inside his body? That thing is hitting me from inside his stomach apparently) then I wouldn't complain as much. Also don't put critical hits when a boss can two-shot you...
There IS one good thing to be said and that is that some of these bosses are legit hard and would be very fun without the technical difficulties of the RNGCriticals/Hitboxes. Because that's my favorite way of doing a "monster" boss fight, very little startup on the attacks, but just enough for you to dodge. And then attacks that are actually hard to dodge and not just "random three-projectile" attack.

Enemies are a mixed bag too. Didn't like the scarab-spider-wtv thingys from the ruins/cavern, and definitely hated the shmup teleporting bats, but the static enemies, the beetles, the slimes, the jumping guys and even the flying enemies are all pretty fun to fight against). This is mostly good with some bad

Side content is pretty fun too (I also totally cheated with a walkthrough to find the optional boss in the caverns as I eventually got completely lost inside there). Majunum is fun (fought him at level 53 with maxed out swords and a bunch of seeds). The grinding can be real bad (do people seriously spend hours and hours to get to level 57-60 to fight Majunum? That's crazy!), but it's only really required to max out one sword (and the emel can be gathered relatively fast in the last dungeon, so if you're just doing the main story, the grind is almost non-existent).

And I think that's it. I recommend anyone that wants to play that if they really want the hardest difficulty, they should go for either Standard Nightmare or Catastrophe Hard.
If I have to say anything else is that Falcom makes leaps of progression between each game they make (holy sh*t Felghana and Origins are such huge improvements), and then I went to check Celceta to see how much they improved from the Ys Seven gameplay, and that made me super hyped for how much they will improve on Ys VIII.

Also, there was a bug after I beat the game where if I click New Game again, the time in my first playthrough shows up in Hard instead of Nightmare. But that's fine.

The merchant could've SOLD it or given it to the royalty.
Considering he's skeptical to even lend it to you, I doubt it =P. Anyway, I'll try looking into that to see if I find anything.

Are you me?
I did exactly this. Word by word.

I feel like the final boss would have been more of a tense fight if I had did it on non-catastrophe mode. I would up maxing out two of my emelas swords and leveling up a bunch in the process. The final fights were cheesed, with the main tricky part that I had to keep enough HP during part 1 of the final fight. Ehh. I'll try them again on the boss rush to see how easier settings make them feel.

The game is beaten though. Storywise I preferred it to Felghana, but it definitely was the 1st try for this system gameplay wise.

For what it's worth it didn't crash for me, I wasn't aware there was an issue.

Might be related to the catastrophe mode achievement? That unlocks some time during the credits I think.

No crashes for me, but my game completion time never seem to get saved in the main menu (when selecting New Game). I started up my Nightmare run earlier and it was gone again (last time it seemed to have saved but on the wrong difficulty).

Not that big a deal all things considered, but if something isn't working as it should it's best to speak up about it I suppose.

Hm, I guess if I can't figure it out, it's not so bad. Could've been worse, but it would've been satisfying if it reached the end screen.

Maybe I'll try again and see sometime.

Any tips on how to get the "beat the boss with 1HP" achievement? I'm super close to 100%, but that's the main one I'm missing.

I've seen people mention using poison, since poison damage can't kill you but it can get you to 1HP.

This would probably be pretty easy to do on the first boss.

Oh wow, totally forgot about poison.

Yeah, I'll use that then, thanks!

I'll start a new playthrough if only for this and the Geis achievement that I also missed.

I really want to keep going through this game but the mandatory grinding is totally killing it for me. I just passed through the first boss and out the other side of the broken bridge and enemies in the new area where I'm guessing I have to go kill me instantly. Quickly verifying with a walkthrough I see that it recommends that I'm 5 levels higher than I am currently. This is crazy. Most games have a difficulty curve, this has a difficulty staircase.

What difficulty are you playing? I did Nightmare/Catastrophe and only grinded at the end game for the optional stuff.

Also, 5 levels is way too much, did you keep running away from enemies? Grinded should not be required if you fight the enemies you find...

Wait, the enemies on the Canaan Plains are giving you trouble? Either you're on Nightmare or you skipped way too many fights to get to that point. Which is doubly worse because less monster slaying = less money, and you need equipment as well as levels to keep up with the game's difficulty curve. You should have at least enough to buy a new shield in Rose's shop. And upgraded Livart at least 2 levels.

I'm playing on Nightmare/Catastrophe. I've played beaten other Ys's on nightmare and they didn't seem to have this steep of a level jump. I've been grinding in Canaan Plains because the enemies in the cave (firefly types) kill me in a few hits.

chaosblade

Unconfirmed Member
Wait, have you went to the moutain yet?

Sounds like he is there, the firefly enemies are the first ones you encounter in the mountain.

Not surprised he needs to grind there, the difficulty curve is really wonky early in the game. Even if you slaughter every enemy in each area you go through before you get there, you will still die in just 3-4 hits by those enemies (or less from those boulder throwing goblins) if you don't grind.

At least on normal. Maybe it's better balanced on hard.

Oh, ok, I was thinking Limewater Cave, but then I realized what I called the "fire bees" weren't there and Limewater is I think blocked off by a dude.

You can get into Limewater early, the guy just warns you it is dangerous. The first enemies there are the slimes though.

In Catastrophe Mode you can actually take advantage of that and get the Galba armor and shield early. If you don't miss any, you can get enough Capla Waters to buy the Silver Armlet and use the armor without taking poison damage by level 10-15.

I'm guessing that will be used for some speedruns.

Noted. The 3 Ark engine games are blurring into one another by this point so details disappear like that here and there, lol.

I should try that in a future playthrough.

You just have to be careful since anything in there will be a 1HKO if it hits you, and I think you need a Capla Water from there to use the armor at the earliest possible point without taking poison damage. Even the Galba equipment won't save you, at best you can survive one hit with that I think, depending on the enemy.

Fortunately most of the enemies there are pretty easily avoidable, but you won't have the item to light up the cave to SEE what you need to avoid. So that adds another wrinkle.

And since this has been posted here and on the Steam community (and probably other places) I'm sure XSEED knows about it. Sara may end up patching it so the NPC blocks you from going in the cave, but I think it's a neat trick that's worth keeping around.

Looks amazing, but I still think the PS2 version is the best version. Yes, I actually prefer the CGI over the faux-anime thing Falcom usually does.
