Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim PC |OT| - Re-Release of the Far West Ocean

I've been a console gamer all my life, but I've always spread out my saves to as many slots as were available. Back when the PS1 was introduced, I would dedicate a whole memory card to a single RPG if it allowed me -- 15 save slots could give you a lot of leeway, after all. ;)

With official Sony memory cards usually at 20-30 bucks a pop, that sounds like an expensive proposition... unless you were in the habit of only playing one game at a time, and erasing your saves after completion. Never mind that some games (usually RPGS) used up multiple blocks for their saves. A game like Persona: Revelations which had 3 block saves would turn 15 potential save slots to a mere 5 (which is still pretty good, all things considered).

I guess what I'm *really* saying is that we're all pretty spoiled these days when it comes to save capacity. I see Napishtim's pages upon pages of save slots and I'm like 'haha wat'.

I do multiple saves all the time if I have the option, just in case I wanted to do or see a special story event. That's why I always appreciated games like Trails in the Sky giving me a ridiculous number of save slots.

However the save size is another story. I think my Trails save folder is 150MB or something crazy. Each save I made of Valkyria Chronicles takes up the exact same size on my hard drive; 5MB. Save data is weird.

FUCK THIS FUCKING DASH JUMP FUCK FUCK FUCK

I QUIT

THIS MECHANIC FUCKING SUCKS

I'm doing the hot key exploit

I don't care

Dash jumping is fucking awful and is making me not have fun anymore and it's the first time in any Ys game where I'm not enjoying myself due to how freaking wonky the mechanic is.

Inversely, to me it feels easier to do the Dash Jump on Steam than from playing the fan-translated Windows PC version. Nailing the landing, on the other hand...

I'm surprised they didn't employ Ericcil's charged up attack mechanic more to reach platforms you can't jump to. Actually, giving all the swords special properties to access hidden areas would have been swell: Livart's wind to blow out flames or hit overhead switches, Blirante's charge attack to mow down walls, etc.

Guess that idea got held over until Oath.

Ohhh so that's how you get to that one room in The Ruins of Lost Time. I could go back, but that would mean I have to do that fucking dash jump again. Torn apart right now :/

You can dash jump that gap for the black tabula its what I did

Also what on earth do you do against the frog boss on the ship? I slide around dealing no damage and dying a lot

Same with me on hard. He was annoying as hell.
Had to stay close and just keep hitting him and hoping my attacking didn't launch me past him and into a pack of that gassy slime poison crap. I ended up using the fire sword's charge attack for most of the fight, since that made it a little more controllable.
It's been a while, but I don't remember being annoyed at the bosses in the Oath and Origin nearly as much as I have been with VI's.

Spam the Ericcil. That's it. Just spam it. Don't jump, don't do anything but spam. The special attack will do decent damage, and then the fight will be over.

Any decent grind spots for Emel? I'm using that room before the Lake boss, but there's no way I'm going to manage this without losing my mind.

edit: Ended up grinding at the room with the bats and the 3 platforms. Took about 30 minutes to get 150k. Still a long way to go.

What the fuck is this fight at the end of the limestone cave

Total fucking garbage, much like (unfortunately) most of the boss fights in this otherwise excellent game.

That was my favorite boss fight so far! Loved it.

I'm a big fan of fights where when you start you get slaughtered by a barrage of attacks, but if you think about how to dodge each one you can win without getting hit. The only thing that still gave me trouble was when a shadow fighter spawned. Very intense and fun fight.

I just beat this one, and it was the hardest for me up to now, annoying in fact, thanks to low damage output while I die quickly (on hard without healing).
My winning strategy was, if there is no poison ground, run at him and slash wildly. If there is poison ground in play, position yourself to safely use the charged fire attack... that seems to be the easiest attack to use without sliding around. If there is no safe place to even use that, just wait it out. You can't trade hits. You can sometimes get a bunch of free charged fire attacks from behind when he charges up to use either roll or poison spit.

I had done some grinding and was up to 39 for the frog though. The worst design decision in this game is having areas where you get stuck... you should always be able to grind in a Ys game if you're willing to take the time. Luckily they fixed that problem for Oath and Origin, which are significantly more refined overall.

Yeah I beat him by maxing my strenght and spamming the fire swords special move.

What does the lucky silver coin do? Increases luck does that mean better item drop rate?

Edit: 250k PER SWORD?

JEEBUS is there anywhere that makes grinding that much emel not a horrible chore?

Oh. Maxing out a sword pretty much gives you instant magic regen. That made grinding a bit easier.

I used a PS4 controller, so I just tap a direction then Attack+Jump. Pulling it off was easier than I expected, but don't waste your time with the platforms early in the Ruins of Time.

The final dungeon tends to offer the most Emel.

The only boss that fucking sucks is the tree one.

Yeah, the first boss is dumb and not particularly enjoyable (although it's a little fun if you decide to get the don't-get-hit achievement on it); the bat boss isn't hard but IS boring, long, and RNG-driven; the lava boss is... fine, I guess, except for yet another thing where you have to do jump-slashes to hit him; the limestone cave boss is OMGWTFBBQ dumb.

JEEBUS is there anywhere that makes grinding that much emel not a horrible chore?

Put on the Emel Hammer (if you've got it), go into
Kishgal
and find the spot (maybe halfway in) where there's a platform with
little red bomb monsters
. Bounce out of the door, kill the four nearby ones, repeat. They drop a 1000 Emel gem around 50% of the time; you can get 100k in about 5-6 minutes that way.

(Also it's 100k to do the last upgrade for each sword, unless it's different at another difficulty...?)

And maybe the last one, because that boss is so boring for a final boss.

What am I reading. Just beat the game and you named my 3 favorite bosses.

The first boss is a perfect introduction. You will most likely die to a single tracking flame at first, letting you know they're serious. But then you'll be tempted to beat it without getting hit, and get a sense of accomplishment. Welcome to Ys.

Limestone cave boss is just awesome. So many things to dodge at once, you'll be running around in circles, jumping over swipes, everything at the same time. Ended up being my favorite thing in the game, and I had fun replaying on time attack.
If you go back and forth destroying the hands to charge your fireball and blasting the face, there is no downtime at all
.

The last boss
at least the first form, the spinning laser show, was a lot of fun
.

The ones I didn't like were the 3 "mini-bosses" (chomping plant, stinging bee, limestone blob) which didn't have fun abilities. And the time wasting floating bug is annoying, I only enjoyed it because I was using the eggs to practice the wind combo at the time.

Overall, loved the game. The style was perfected in Oath and Origin, but this is a must play too.

The first boss is a perfect introduction.

Compare this guy to the first boss in Oath, Dularn, who lets you maneuver on a full battlefield and fight using the game's actual sword mechanics, but still gives you a wide range of challenging patterns to avoid. (Or even the second boss, who asks you for precision dodging and magic projectile use, in a relatively elegant way.)

Whereas this guy... has a really, really easy pattern to dodge, and the first (but by no means last!) hitbox designed to make you jump like an idiot every time you want to deal damage. No contest.

Limestone cave boss is just awesome.

Poor visual indicators of what's going on, only a limited selection of (bad) ways to actually damage the boss, attacks that are poorly coordinated so that there's RNG chance of just getting damaged regardless of what you do. Plus an even worse jump-to-do-damage setup than the previous fights. Ugh.

The bosses do get better after that. But when Oath (which has so many more bosses to start with) has all these interesting encounters like the fire dragon, the harpies, the dog -- and they all generally encourage you to fight things the way you practice by playing the game, instead of with random jumping crap or lame per-fight damage mechanics -- I feel justified being harsh on this game. (For the bosses, basically everything else is great.)

There's a sweet spot somewhere on the back, I think it's connected to her belly.

After you learn the pattern, that boss is pretty easy.

Those
Romun soldiers
were tougher than I expected. Had to forgo searching for one chest in order to complete the stage.
Terra and Olha were dying in every scenario when I stretched myself to get all 3 chests
.

There's four, even if only one matters the rest only have money IIRC.

Just finished this on Normal for the first time. I feel like other Ys games took much longer to beat. I think I finished this in just under 6 hours.

I think Origins took me double that.

6 hours? that's pretty fast, I did everything you could do in the game(which isn't much) and took around 10 hours.

Aaand the boss in the Limewater Cave is down. Strange fight. Hit him once with Fire and Lightning magic, got knocked around the stage until my magic bar was full again and then hit him with Fire magic again. He ded. To top it off my sound decided to cut out again just when the boss started (even though I restarted the game just a few minutes earlier to avoid this), so the entire experience was...kind of underwhelming.

Wait THIS is the point of no return? Jeebus nothing here drops that many emel how do they seriously expect anyone to get 250k PER sword?

And Elizabeth is down. So far probably the easiest boss in the game after the first one, she went down pretty fast and without actually landing a big hit on me.

Before that I went back to the Limewater Cave without having that light-producing crystal equipped, was pretty suprised to see that the annoying energy-beam spamming things are actually doppelgangers of Adol. That's pretty cool :D

EDIT: Just when I thought I had enough Emelas to get one of my swords to Lv. 10....nope. Armor time. Oh well, at least I actually didn't lose that much Emelas thanks to the small gift in Kishgal ;)

About Kishgal...one of the villains in Ys: Origin also was named Kishgal, wasn't he. Any connections here? Considering he was a pretty minor villain I don't think so, but then again Ys Origin and now Ark of Nepishtem are the only Ys games I played so far, so I might miss some info here.

EDIT 2: Game just got updated? Any patch notes for us, Tom?

My problem with the Elizabeth fight wasn't her attacks, those were all easy to predict and dodge... the problem was all the slime she left on the ground along with the poison clouds she'd spawn which made using any attack other the charged fire magic a liability when Adol would slide all over the place into clouds and die.

Upgraded the electric sword to max level because it has the best magic and got Adol to 50 and I stomped the 3 rematch optional bosses. I feel I can beat the game now, part of me wants to max the other two swords but part of me just wants to get this game over with so I can move on and play something else (Broken Age act 2 specifically).

Edit: Is it even worth it to try and beat Majuunin or w/e it's name is on hard/catastrophe? Considering the recommended level for normal is 57 I don't even want to image the misery of grinding that high on hard.

Lol yeah just did exactly that. Magic. Hit boss two times. Magic. Hit boss two times. Magic. Dead. Lightning magic Lv.3 is really really good. I think I'll grind another 100k for the Water Sword and call it a day. Never used the Fire Sword for anything but the boss in the Limewater Caves, not worth grinding for imo.

You normal mode people with your less boss attacks (at least I'm pretty sure as the guide I've read doesn't mention attacks the boss does and is clearly describing a normal run) and your cheaper sword upgrades. 250k per sword upgarde is where real men waste their life grinding work

Beat the game, the second of the 3 final bosses was the best and while I appreciated the first phase of the final boss I felt that kind of boss should have been an early foe and not the final foe in the game. The final bosses second form was awful I'm not even sure how that was supposed to be challenging.

Ending was good and I'm pretty happy how all these Ys stories have slowly been building and while largely stand alone you are rewarded for playing them all

I also got this error message after the final ending cinematic played

Tom you wanna comment on what this is or what it means?

I like how I'm the go-to guy for this, for some reason. ;)

I have no idea what that means, honestly. I'll pass it along to Sara, though (assuming she doesn't see it here first), and see what she makes of it. Thanks for screenshotting it -- that helps immensely!

NEVAH!! ;)

...For real, though, our plate is really full right now, so while we will likely have more announcements coming soon, none of them (save for a Trails SC release date, whenever we're able to come up with one) will be PC-related for a little while yet. I wouldn't count on any other PC announcements until well after E3 at the earliest, as our lives are going to be crazy hectic till then.

It's okay Tom, that's ALL I need.

Note that I said "whenever we're able to come up with one" -- that, too, could be a ways off! I was just covering my butt, because I knew if I said anything about there being no PC announcements for a while and DIDN'T mention SC, I'd get bombarded. ;)

It's okay, I'm just joking around. Hopefully it's at least coming out this year!

Xanadu Next when?

Phew, just finished the game; and the first form of
Napishtim
was quite imaginative, probably the only boss I enjoyed in the game.

Anyway, is there anything after the credits? Game crashed after finishing the credits (Generic error)

Last scene is a The End screen. If you saw that before the crash, you're golden. Finishing the game the first time also unlocks Time Attack on the title screen.

Nope, didn't see that

EDIT: At least Time Attack is available on the menu
