Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim PC |OT| - Re-Release of the Far West Ocean

Finished the game at like 2am this morning. Loved it.

I don't think Napishtim was as polished as Felghana or Origin, which I suppose isn't surprising given that it came out first. This is most evident in the boss fights, which (at least on hard) can be on the cheesy side and just aren't quite as thrilling as the duels in something like Felghana.

Where I do think the game has the advantage, though, is in it's scope. It feels like you're on a grand adventure in this game, far more than in the other two. There's more open space to traverse, more characters, more dialogue -- Ys VI feels much more like a traditional RPG. And I kinda dig that. I also think Ys VI might have the best soundtrack of the three. It's more electronic than butt-rock, which really kinda works for the game.

The game took me about 12 hours on hard, and I was pretty thorough. I enjoyed every moment of it. I'm completely satisfied.

No way, man. Oath has the best OST of the three, hands down. Better than Origin? Maybe. But Oath's too incredible to sell short. Agree on everything else though.

Actually, Felghana's OST is the one I enjoy the less of the three - I *like* it, but... I don't love it. It has five or six pretty awesome arrangements (Steeling the Will to Fight, Valestein Castle, Chop!!, etc) and then the rest are just... relatively good, I suppose. I personally prefer other versions (PC-88/98, X68000, Mega Drive, PC Engine CD, *insert Falcom arrange album here*) more.

I actually really love Ishibashi's more electronic and ambient sound of Ys VI's OST - tracks like Ultramarine Deep, Reconciled People, Windslash Steps, Mountain Zone, Defend! And Escape!, The Ruined City 'Kishgal' and The Depth Napishtim are some of my favourite tracks in the game and always put a smile on my face. And then Ys Origin got all those super sick Takeshita tunes such as Scarlet Tempest, Scars of the Diving Wing and Beyond the Beginning.

God, the answers.

Sorry for being able to like songs from more than one series/games/composers, and sorry for having a brain I can use to point out what I really think and not why the others want to read for not breaking the happy dream world were we all agree with everything.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

That is one hell of a long sentence.

I tend to agree with that. I'm particularly fond of Water Prison in Ys Origin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XF4L6ZBfjQ&index=10&list=PLzFTGYa_evXiZCM5ZRD87q-hZMDoCpm0j

Felghana is consistenty good in the music department, but there's a shortage of songs that knock me flat on my ass with how good they are.

Pretty damn screwed, I must say. Did you save at a separate slot before reaching the point of no return?

Cue glorious Ys battle music.

I was level 48 with no separate save. Makes me wonder why they even put save points there. Although it was a mistake on my part, it's something that shouldn't even be in the game.

I get that you can't use the wings to return, but at least let me walk back to the wyvern corridor. I missed quite a few items and I wanted to see the difference between casual and catastrophe mode, so I'll enjoy myself with Normal. However it leaves a bitter taste after all the fun I had playing this game. Dying didn't matter, getting locked down does.

As for the music, the tracks from Ys V on the silver anniversary album are a tad underwelming. In general I really like the soundtracks of the Ys series. From Valestein Castle to First Step Towards.

*look at the guide to figure out where to go next*

*notice like 8 items I apparently permanently missed*

Damn this game is really unforgiving on the timed side quest thing

Point of no return. Is it worth it to upgrade all my swords to the max? I have the fire sword maxed and the rest at the penultimate level. Grinding the 200-ish k is feasible, but boring.

Total fucking garbage, much like (unfortunately) most of the boss fights in this otherwise excellent game.

Really? If that's true that's pretty sad to hear; I think the boss fights in Oath in Felghana and Origin are the absolute highlights of those games (I'd put them well over the boss lineups from pretty much any Platinum game, really).

The little semi-optional bosses are fine, I guess, but most of the story bosses combine arbitrary vulnerability windows with fiddly hitboxes, mechanics that are hard to engage correctly, and annoying stuff like long periods spent hanging out in undamageable range. It's not that they're hard (they're almost certainly easier overall than many of Oath's on the same difficulty), it's really that they're designed in ways that make them unenjoyable.

NOPE.

Anyone got a spare save file on Normal C. at the save point before the point of no return?
Or can advise in editing the save file so I'm at the last save point in the final dungeon before that part.

What the fuck is this fight at the end of the limestone cave

I know man, I know. Just spam the fire magic at the fucker, and pray you don't die before it does. Good luck landing successful jumping attacks on the arm though...

Normal Catastrophe? I got that. Just, uh... let me find the save file first. I'm actually outside near the town but you can just warp to the save point in Wyvern Corridor.
EDIT: where the hell are this game's saves? Or any of them for that matter? Why does Steam have to make this so complicated...

I must be the only one who just wacks the flying fish back at its face.

Thanks mate, check in the Documents folder as well as the game's directory. Worse case scenario, you may find it stored in the Users folder in C drive :p

I tried that.
Adol misses 80% of the time.

Hm, nope. Can't find it. It would probably help if I knew what the file format was.
EDIT: I think this is it? filename is ys6_00.nacci
Download here

unzip and place the file inside C:\Program Files\Steam\userdata\56674603\312540\remote\
backup the file that's already there, just in case

I got good results with Livart, especially if you employ the chain spinning.

Thanks mate, also the PC Gaming Wiki lists where the save file is stored.

I also wish to express my thanks :)

Apparently I missed a lot of items lol

o_O Did you guys know that a Ys anime exists? Watching the first episode right now and it doesn't seem half bad, they even took over some of the songs from the game.

This might be because I've been a PC gamer for so long, but people who don't save in a unique slot every time baffle me.

Well...all Falcom games I've played so far didn't have any major 'point of no return', heck even Brandish lets you revisit previous floors and areas even if you start fighting the final boss lol.

:p

By the way I was looking up a boss strategy on youtube and happened to catch that PS2 CG scene and the voice acting...

Yikes.

So glad that shit isn't in this version. It's below 90s anime dub level, haha!

Where is that from? Gintama?

Single save is a bad habit of mine, which gets punished in this game. I finished the game just now. I'll do a hard catastrophe mode when I feel like it.

Haha yeah. I am 5 hours into the game (about to enter Limewater Cave) and have about 30 different save files already. It's an RPG, it just makes sense.

Finally got a chance to start this (playing on Normal Catastrophe). I stopped soon after I unlocked the fire sword; having a great time so far. Some of the regular enemies have been pretty annoying though! Music is great (of course), and the visuals are as charming as I'd expect from Ys. I need sleep now, but I'm really looking forward to continuing.

Speaking of the bonus content-
Was there a novel or prequel thing that gives more detail on how Adol and Dogi joined Ladoc's crew and their trek to the Vortet?

And once again I've been reminded just how much of a difference a bit of grinding can make in this game. Tried to take on the bee boss with Lv. 29 and Lv. 7 weapons. Got fucking destroyed. Spent like 20min grinding just the first two screens of the Limewater Cave to get enough Emelas to get my weapons to Lv. 8 and levelled up to Lv. 34 in the process. Returned to the bee boss and downed that sucker with just the magic attack of my swords. The thunder attack alone took half of the bee's HP o_O

Our website at http://www.worldofys.com has a brief summary in the story section, based on the story summary presented in the game's Japanese manual. For an alternate take, though (which is not technically canonical, but is close enough), check out Konami's PS2 intro here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jsHWrmlqqY

Even more alternately, Falcom apparently had a VERY DIFFERENT idea in mind for this at one point, and the dialogue from that take was still left over in the game's code, unused. The editor on this title, Brittany, went into that a bit on our Tumblr here: http://xseedgames.tumblr.com/post/117643289435/ys-vi-the-ark-of-napishtim-localization-blog-3

The mindset of the console gamer who grew up on earlier consoles: battery save allowed for maybe 3 save files at most, later memory cards became standard but their capacity was severely limited and shared among all your games. You pretty much adhere to a "one save file per run" mentality, especially if you have family who also game.

Also: when an jRPG character gives you a choice regarding continuing forward or backing off for now, you should probably take it as a warning you might not be able to come back if you choose to go.

I know a lot of people didn't like fighting the 3rd boss, but honestly I liked it a lot more than the first two. It felt a more thrilling, even if there was definitely RNG influences. Nowhere close to Oath and Origin bosses of course.

I've been a console gamer all my life, but I've always spread out my saves to as many slots as were available. Back when the PS1 was introduced, I would dedicate a whole memory card to a single RPG if it allowed me -- 15 save slots could give you a lot of leeway, after all. ;)

I often max out on games that people don't even realize have an upper limit to save slots, too. There were quite a few PSP games that I think most people thought let you save to as many slots as you wanted, but as I discovered, some of them had a hard limit set of 100! Heheh...
