Hey guys, encoding some videos for 1up right now.

Single player is sooooooooooooooooooo much more fleshed out than EDF. I'm only 9 or so stages in and I've seen like 4 or 5 different areas! OMG!

Online is really fun too, you can't share your weapons with your offline character though :/ Stages seem different. That's all I got for now!

Amazingly fail

Still excited to play it for the SP (wasn't going to play online much in the first place), but they completely did not get how online EDF should be.

The camera is all over the place when you aim the bow in the online video. Is the control stupid or something, or you just didn't feel like getting into the game at the time, or perhaps have an awkward setup @ work that stops you from playing well, or whatever else? It looks dodgy...

Great, the only person in America to import Kizuna and he is banned.

They make some bows harder to aim than others.

Is this going to be the import discussion thread? My copy shipped yesterday.

I'm not mod, but I started this thread and I see no problem with talking about it here, or starting a new thread; but again, I'm not a mod.

So I wonder if this will be at GDC or E3. I really hope it does come to the US because even if I did import it I wouldn't be able to enjoy it without some kind of translation.

is that something that is regular practice for JPN online games? or does it vary game to game? (i would like to play this coop in the US, with another person... in the US.)

Just got my copy from amazon.jp. w/ the limited soundtrack! The game didn't come with a slipcover though. Do the other retail copies have them? Because I saw some display copies at Tsutaya with slipcovers on them.

and holy shit at the points! This is the first time I've ever used the JP Club Nintendo's intend to buy function (15 points for this game) + early registration bonus (30 points!) = 75 points! Plus there will be a 10 point post-play survey coming soon too. That's 85 points! Considering the game costs only 5,436 and came w/ a soundtrack and it's Reginleiv I can't help but feel I got some sort of bargain.

Then after that, just 5 more points for platinum! Yay!

Last year I was buying bargain bin games just for the points to reach platinum in JP -- and it's totally worth it considering what the prize was.

I doubt it. I remember lots of Japanese players in Mario Kart DS online and wii.

Ok, got mine and M+ today and played a few hours.

Honestly I think the game kind of sucks :\
If EDF3 was a small disappointment from EDF2, this is a large one

Things I like:
-Slashing dudes is fun. Without motion+ it kind of is spazzy and sucks. With motion+ it's slower but more accurate and fun.
-...
-.....
-.......
-yeah, that's about it

Things I don't like:
-CUTSCENES. They are not bad. But when you watch a cutscene AS LONG AS THE MISSION before the mission it means I'm watching half the time I'm playing. For an action game this in unacceptable. I had the same issue with Bayonetta recently. Sure the cutscenes in all these games are skippable, but then you have no idea what's going on in the story context. Either make the cutscenes short or do them like EDF where it's just through the radio as you play. I couldn't play more than about an hour or so straight because it just got boring playing for 5 mins, menu for 2 mins, watching for 5 mins, playing for 5 mins. EDF is popcorn action, when you're not in the action you're not having fun.

-Going with that, all the pauses between waves so your STORY CHARACTERS can have dialogue chats....ugh. It feels like they were attempting to make the game more like Musou and I don't approve. Same with having to traverse distances of nothing between waves. Like I said above, when you are FIGHTING the game is fun, when you are not it's just boring filler time.

-Weapon obtaining system. The upgrade system is boring. What made EDF great besides the action was the diablo style of random loot drops. It made fighting endless grunts FUN because you never knew when one would drop a weapon that might be zomg. Now there is no incentive besides oooh crystals.

-No jetpack/flying + non-destructable objects = traversing sucks. Sounds silly but when you get stuck behind fences and have to slowly double moon jump over them it's pretty lame. These are gods. Why can't they fly. They fly in the cutscenes! At least in EDF when you were not the flying jetpack girl you could just blow up any obstacle in your way since it was 100% destructable. Why can't I cut down a fence? wtfff

-Controls. This is more a minor complaint because I'm still getting used to it and I can tell it needs some MAJOR adjustments (sprsks, any suggestions). Beginner controls are horrible, but that's ok, they're horrible in EDF. Expert controls are ok but turning is really iffy. Sometimes I'm turning fine, other times I'm not turning at all so I'm stuck backdashing to re-adjust my view. Then you have the dashing, it works ok but about 20% of the time I try to forward dash (because I need to traverse some long distance of nothing) he backflips which is very counterproductive! I've never found the 3dimensional registration of the nun-chuck to be particularly good on the wii, so that doesn't help.

-Bows seem stupid. To pull back a bow far enough to shoot ONE arrow it takes like 20 seconds of standing still pulling back. It's also not fun at all on the wiimote.

-Graphics. EDF2 was pretty impressive for PS2 tech, EDF3 looked great for early X360 tech, this does not look great for current Wii tech :( From the early screens/footage I thought it was going to be nice looking, but the character models are pretty bad which because there is such a focus on cutscenes is really noticable. Framerate is all over the place, but that's normal for EDF and I don't mind.

So yeah, while it's unfair to the game that I am directly comparing everything to EDF since it's a different game trying to do something different in almost all aspects, it just boils down to EDF being FUN and this being...kind of boring. Too much emphasis on story in cutscenes and in missions, controls that while being fun in the you-are-slashing sense are worse than EDF for most normal things and crappy level design/no-loot-system makes this pretty ho-hum. It's like EDF if they took all the fun arcade stuff out and tried to make a serious "real" game.

I'll give it some more time and maybe those playing can recommend setting adjustments to improve the experience, but very disappointed right now. Why didn't the team just make what everyone in the world wanted? A 16p online EDF (along with offline splitscreen) with jetpack girl and new enemies/weapons :(

Well, that's disappointing.
Practically on the basis of this thread, I hunted down EDF 2017 (which I completed in one 8 hour long marathon), and was really looking forward to that style of popcorn arcade action and looting in a fantasy setting. But if they removed those aspects that made EDF fun, then... blah.

I've seen a number of videos of this game, and...aside from the nifty-looking box art, I really can't figure out why people seem so excited for this game. It just looks way too simplistic to me to be enjoyable for more than half an hour or so.

Granted I haven't played the game, so maybe someone who imported it or has seen more video can answer this, but is there any more strategy to the game than just running somewhat up to the monster and slashing, then watching them explode into a shower of blood? Is there any real strategy involved? Everything I've seen just comes off as a glorified tech demo without a whole lot of actual game variety to be had. Right now if I'm looking to take down huge monsters with friends online, I'm probably looking at Monster Hunter Tri.

jj984jj

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Sounds like a boring game that removed my favourite part of EDF 2017 (local co-op). Whatever little interest I had left in this game is pretty much gone.

Yep... that sure looks bad.... ok, Nintendo of America, you dont need to spend time with this one.

To tell you the truth, i was already out when i heard that swordfighting was not 1:1, but someone explained that it wouldnt make much sense in this game,....

either way, when you have 1:1 motion controlled swordfight in a game you at least have something new to try. Like "yeah, i know the game looks like crap, but i wanna see how motion controls work on this one". But without the 1:1 a bad game turns out to be just... bad.

1 bad impression (after other good ones) and suddenly everyone's against this? Wtf? It's the same game that made everyone look forward to it in the first place. Not an AAA product, but fantasy EDF. It seems to deliver going by most of what can be read/seen here, minus one comment. And that's not even a bad impression either. The game's fun when you're fighting he says... Much like the EDF games then... Well, isn't that what you'll be doing 90% of the gameplay time, and won't levels obviously get tougher and more chaotic as you go? That the story annoys you yet you don't skip it to know what's happening is a pretty silly reason. Skip it already. It's no MGS, just attack the red dots in the radar and protect the green. I imagine the levels played online don't even have cut scenes to speak of anyway, and likely a lot of the single player doesn't either.

So, unless I'm missing some obvious Bebpo > sprsk or something... How about let's wait and see? The live stream looked fun to me and a tube video showing demo weapons alone had tons of variety itself... Looks promising to me. Maybe others expected something that looks like Oblivion and plays like the Sony wands demo or something. Tough.

Some of the other recent tube videos look fun too. And there's always the "I don't like it, but maybe you will" position. As opposed to "it's shit, don't localise it plx" etc. Some people might like the story for one example. Or not care about it and just go in to kill stuff and see the huge bosses.

For the record Agnates, I'm not going by anybody's impressions of the game beyond what I've gleaned from video footage, and I haven't played EDF so there's no basis for comparison. It just doesn't look all that entertaining to play, that's just my opinion. I'd love to be wrong and see Nintendo publish some sort of awesome online-enabled mature title, but the gameplay just looks extremely basic. I've seen a few different weapons but they all seem to boil down to "draw a blue line on the screen and you'll chop off limbs in that direction" or "point at something for a while and then you'll fire your projectile and destroy it."

Again, I'm hoping that there's more to it than that.

Describing things like that, you can describe every FPS ever as basic point and click, or describe No More Heroes as just slashing away stuff and occasionally dodging, just like this game, except with the dark step instead of a back flip or whatever... Etc... You don't draw a blue line as was explained in this thread. You just slash away, some weapons and their combos are fast and therefor the character does the slashes near instantly with no line other than the slashing effect, but other slow powerful weapons or attacks have a build up time and that's when the line merely appears to show you the trajectory of the imminent hit. Sure, it's not the most elegant way to do it (hopefully they add some options for it if it's ever localised), but it's not drawing either, and it was obvious this is a B game through and through. Other than that, yeah, it's a simple concept, much like any non RPG game. Defeat crowds of enemies and gigantic bosses, and whatever other objective the story throws at you, I imagine it'll have defend particular spots, attack particular objectives to progress, escort, prevent the destruction of things, etc type stuff. Like a motion plus powered Dynasty Warriors + gigantic bosses + weapon variety going by some of the videos. So, much like any action game with its own twists and motion plus powered slashing and pointer powered shooting. I'm not sure what else was expected from an action game. The objects look destructible to me from the videos contrary to what Bebpo says btw, perhaps weapons other than he's using can destroy them. Or some friendly installations can't be destroyed by you because then it wouldn't make sense they still befriend you or whatever else.
