Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

I think we need an official Tetris Party thread on the online forum.
My code is 1848 4822 4062 if anybody likes to add me.
I don't like pressing A to hold tetraminos, I'd have preferred to use the classic controller or at least the B button.
When connecting online it tells "new tournament", but if I check the tournament option it tells there aren't any at the moment

I have to clean up my Fridge soon. Bomberman '93 and ToeJam and Earl has to got, I guess :(. Getting Tetris Party and World of Goo though, so it's not all bad :D

EDIT: Wow! I just read World of Goo isn't going to be a retail title in Europe, is that true!?

You can swap the A and B button functions in the options menu. The game does support the Classic controller as well.

so I was just reading the how to on using a 4GB card for the Wii. Not bad at all, but Nintendo still needs to give us an easy way to either play or seamlessly play games from the SD card. Or at the very least use the SD card for game saves. Regardless, for $10 hopefully now I can stop having to delete games as a way to clean the fridge. 4GB should be enough to hold pretty much all of my current shop purchases.

edit - although nintendo should still update the card reader to support SDHC and >2GB natively.

I bought Super Dodge Ball last night and blew through the entire game on normal difficulty. Guess I played that a little too much way back when...

Just wanted to note for Tetris.

The online works well. In fact, it's pretty instant. Never had to wait more than 30 seconds for a game.

What are the 3 best shmups on VC?

Zanac, Super Star Soldier or Soldier Blade, Lords of Thunder*.

*I haven't played this last one yet but I have played most of the other notable horizontal shooters on the system and it seems clear from everything I've read and watched that LoT is far superior to all of them.

I never played or downloaded a TG16 game, I'm wondering how large (file size) such games can be when it's basically a CD image that contains redbook audio and FMV. How many CD games can fit on the Wii internal memory?

I'm giving a Wii to my in laws for Christmas, but they only have dial up internet at their house so I'm putting some classic games on the system. They haven't played games (except at my house) since Atari 2600 and NES, and want classics like they remember from those years. So far I've downloaded:

Super Mario Bros.
Galaga
Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
Pac-Man
Super Mario Bros. 3

They'll also have:
Wii Sports
Wii Play

I may also download:
Tetris Party
World of Goo
DigDug

My mother-in-law requested PitFall and Scrabble, but those aren't available.

My father-in-law enjoyed Excite Bike, but requested a racing wheel. I've only played Excite Bike and Mario Kart. What racing wheel games are good?

Is there a chance of Atari 2600 games coming to VC?

What other games would you recommend for my in laws?

DECK'ARD

The Amiga Brotherhood
GRADIUS II!

Technically GORGEOUS game for the PC-Engine. And the MUSIC! :O

Roland Sound Space 3D sound as well.

Can't wait to play it again, if only my plasma hadn't just blown up :(

Turbo CD games currently run anywhere from 147 (Cho Aniki) to 273 (Ys Book I & II) blocks. Most of the notable shooters (Gate and Lords of Thunder, Gradius II, Star Parodier) run from 210-220. HuCard games, on the other hand, are only about 25-30 blocks.

Excite Truck. Is that what you meant when you said Excite Bike? It can be played with the Wii Wheel.

Bubble Bobble.
Mario Bros.
Galaga '90 is supposed to be great.

Lost Winds?

Balloon Fight they might not have played before, but it is a great old school 2 player game, and can serve as a substitute for the 2600 game Joust.

If they are gamers from that earlier era, maybe they would also be interested in pinball, in which case the Crush games would be good.

Hey, just finished stage 30 on Orbient (awesome game!) Does anyone know which stages are not from the GBA game and new in this version? I`m just curious.

All I know is that Orbient has 50 stages while Orbital had 40.

What does that do?

If games look like total shit on your HDTV and you are using component cables, this should fix it. It toggles software-faked interlace mode, and makes a WORLD of difference on HDTVs.

Valtox said:
when do you have to press them to look Super Mario RPG less terrible in HD? Also, classic controller you have to use has not "z" but zl and zr :S

I think you need to use the Nunchuk to trigger it, and you should do it in the operations manual screen (Home, Operations Manual once inside the VC game)

I think one of the GCN Pitfall games has the original Pitfall as an option or unlockable. The new Wii Pitfall (I think a port of one of the GCN games) may have that as well.

And to amend my earlier suggestion, if pinball is of interest, the Williams Pinball Collection is probably your best bet.

I wonder if Nintendo keeps up with their pretty interesting updates tomorrow! Hope so! Birthdays people, who has them!

Well, we know that the next Art Style game should be in the lineup since they said there were two for October.

What else? Well, it's nearly halloween, so maybe Splatterhouse 3, Castlevania 3, or Dracula X for TG-16? Or will Nintendo do the ultimate bonehead move and release Drac X SNES version? We'll find out in a few hours...

No more TG-16 games this month per official Hudson site...though I'm expecting Rondo in November or December.

I'm guessing Space Harrier & Metal Slug 2. Although we might be due for another one game VC week.

For Halloween I say we'll have a monster mash in settings of the past and the future, with Castlevania III and Phantasy Star IV. And hey, let's go for the full-blown prediction and say we'll even have monster-bashing fun in the present, with Earthbound. Yep. Inbound day of three games and greatness all around, clearly!

Nintendo hates us. We will never get Earthbound. Was it even rated by the ESRB for a VC release?

You guys have any suggestions for an SD card? 2GB is wii's limit, right? What's the fastest card?

Before you buy one, take note that you cannot play Wii VC or WiiWare games off of SD card at all. Heck, Nintendo's big storage "solution" is just to let you download stuff directly to SD card; you'll still need to copy the stuff off of SD before you can play em. So SD card is rather worthless, especially with how uber slow the Wii is at writing to em.

Because redbook audio is completely uncompressed CD music tracks, that the system just tells the CD player to play. So all they have to do is turn those tracks into MP3's, have the emulator change CD-play calls to MP3-play calls, and suddenly a 640MB music CD is 64MB at the most. As for FMV's, many games like Ys 1&2 don't use em, and instead use in-engine cutscenes.

Based on what's out in other territories, I could see tomorrow's VC releases being any of the following: Enduro Racer, Earthworm Jim, Space Harrier, Phantasy Star 4, and maybe Metal Slug 2. Of course, they could just pull something out of nowhere as well. I think an EWJ + PSIV release would be a nice way to cap off the month, and I'm almost optimistic enough to hope for that. Still, we get Art Style and Strongbad tomorrow regardless, so the VC releases will just be gravy.

Well, we "know" the WiiWare releases are going to be one Art Style game ("two more for October" at the release of Orbital) and Strong Bad (episode 3 scheduled for "October"). The VC stuff is a mystery, of course... Castlevania seems more likely than Splatterhouse, but we could get one of each.

Or even both! We have been getting 2 WW and 2 VC game weeks for a while now and it makes perfect sense with Halloween coming up.

And how many blocks does the Wii have? (I really don't know).

Does anyone have info on the number of free blocks the launch day Wii systems had?

My Wii, even when I delete all my downloadable games, seems suspiciously low on memory. I think it's tied to the number of 50-100 block save files games are creating.

Yes, I know. But I want offline access to games I have to delete to make room, so I don't have to rely on the internets to get games back.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Oct. 27, 2008

It's a rockin' week at the Wii™ Shop Channel, featuring fresh additions to two hot WiiWare™ game series, plus a character-driven classic for the Virtual Console™. Fans of Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People will find an awesome new installment, while those who've discovered Nintendo's extraordinary Art Style™ series will discover an elegant new puzzle title to enjoy. And if you've got room in your game library for a heroic earthworm, don't miss the Wii debut of the legendary Earthworm Jim™.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare

Strong Bad Episode 3: Baddest of the Bands (Telltale Games, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older - Alcohol Reference, Crude Humor, Mild Cartoon Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes, 1,000 Wii Points): Rock and roll! Hurting for cash, Strong Bad sets out to dominate the “Battle Royale of the Bands.” Can he rule the stage and win the big prize? Or will he be drowned out by the competition? Find out in this high-voltage episode.

Art Style: ROTOHEX™ (Nintendo, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Use colored triangular panels to create a vibrant mosaic of stained glass in Art Style: ROTOHEX. As triangles fall from the top of the screen, rotate them to group six panels of the same color and create a matching hexagon, or HEX. Once the HEX has been formed, it will disappear, allowing the existing panels to shift and more panels to fill the playing field. A clear-cut goal and two different styles of intuitive controls allow you to focus solely on the game play-which is vital, as the playing field will be full of panels before you know it. With multiple modes (unlock more as you progress further in SOLO mode), special item panels at your disposal, and the ability to play cooperatively or competitively with a friend, there will always be another HEX to create.

Virtual Console

Earthworm Jim (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Animated Violence, 800 Wii Points): Jim was an ordinary earthworm who did very earthworm-like things, such as flee from crows and eat dirt. One day, during an outer space fight, a suit drops to Earth and falls around Jim. It mutates him into a large and intelligent (at least by earthworm standards) superhero. Play as Jim in this Sega Genesis classic. When Jim learns of the evil plans of Psy-Crow and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt, he decides to rescue Princess What's-Her-Name. Run, gun, swing on hooks by your head and launch cows at the interesting characters you meet along the way, such as Major Mucus, Chuck and Fifi, Evil the Cat, and Bob the Killer Goldfish.
