"Post-cyberpunk" was an interesting perspective done well in VA-11 Hall-A. The broad concepts being invoked are interesting, but I don't get the impression there is anything being done with them.

A society where there is no need anymore for human problem-solvers, where everything is made in the most optimised way. Will things/AI/progress be evenly distributed or restricted to wealthy urban centres? Does society come to exist only for leisure? You’ll find out as you explore our 4 distinct districts.

Does the notion of being human break down, or does it become elevated, freed from the need to sit at a desk from 9–5 to earn enough money to pay rent? Maybe, freed from the drudgery of labour, we all become artists and philosophers and a new global Golden Age is ushered in?

Or do we become terminally apathetic? Was work an integral part of being human, always willing to push the boundaries? Isn’t it against our instinct for constant self-improvement? What do we strive for, what make us wake up in the morning if not a goal? We don’t have any answer. I'm having a hard time giving this a charitable reading considering the roots of the game's alleged ideology according to Tim in 2014. Maybe they really did realize the flaws with reactionary thought but are now stalled at that "both sides are just as bad" phase? But it seems unlikely. Not impossible, but unlikely.

Going to need to see some full condemnations of Gamergate and apologies to it's victims at the very least to have a charitable reading of this.

A good way to show he's serious, would be to start by apologizing to Zoe Quinn.

A lot of people say dumb shit when they're a teenager on the internet (a lot of people don't as well, but fuck those perfect assholes) the thing is though, it doesn't seem like this dudes only "changing" in order to control the damage, there is little evidence before yesterday that his views are any different then they were 4 years ago,

Thank you for informing me on how to read. Me not think good.

I posted that excerpt in its entirety, with the context of it being about explaining societal shifts to someone from 100 years ago.
I added the emphasis because it is the weirdest part of that excerpt, and not just because of the phrasing.

My commentary was not just about that line. It was about the concept of the excerpt in its entirety, framed (since most of the thread is about feminism) around how they view women.
Even if I was willing to give them benefit of doubt w/r/t it being awkwardly phrased; the entire section is weird as hell. You could have produced just as stark of a contrast (if not more stark) between now and then with say gay rights/black lives matter activists interacting with smartphones and social media or say other "taboos" related to civil liberties. But instead we get porn (and more specifically a woman in the porn business using twitter). That is the example we get to illustrate how it is to live today. And when you put that with the expressed views about feminism, that's not calming.

In the end, I'll wait for the reviews of this. After all, being a douchebag doesn't prevent people from writing a good story. It just makes it so much less likely.

Okay, I am making a BIG concession here, I admit that. But by god, does the game look amazing. I'll overlook the writers personal shit if he writes a good story for this. It's not bad enough for me to be unable to seperate the person from the artist.

I have been thinking about this a lot upon realizing that pop stars now have lyrics that border on pornography. Beyonce sings about giving a blowjob and getting her dress ejaculated on. If such broad entertainers enjoy widespread success with extremely explicit content, what can anyone in the future do to be transgressive? They are slowly running out of ways to shock or rebel.

I am not that into this debacle but nice for him to apologize. Are these like he claimed old tweets and he has not continued whit that garbage he is forgiven in my eyes. Everyone deserves a second chance.

NeoGAF only represents a part of the gamer community, there are surely other boards where people are opening their wallets already in a "get fucked SJWs!" rush to support the game. There are also people who will have seen the trailer from the conference and probably never dive into a forum to see this controversy. I think it'll do fine.

IDK I was more zoning in on the "within the context of the game" part. Hoping to find some light.. somewhere. I mean that old ragtimey song 60 minute man is about cumming for 15 minutes after 15 minutes of smoochin. I don't really think sex should be seen as transgressive.

I'm not sure if it's really being held up as an example of "How we live today".

The pornstar tweet is used because it deals with the cyberpunk themes of body augmentation and enhancement, as well as the necessary escalation of transgressive behavior over time.

good on him to apologize publicly (although I doubt his motivations), but he was liking gamergate shit just yesterday. This reeks a bit of changing due to money, not because of empathy and understanding those who are oppressed and harassed.

now it's time for him to do the work to make up for it: support women, signalboost, participate in feminist protests locally, endorse feminist organizations, shut down and make a stand against diet sexists at the workplace, read up on intersectionality, and on and on. If I want to be naive, hopefully this is a step towards a better path. The dude isn't out of the woods yet, as I am not easily convinced by a simple apology the day after shit hits the fan and the sales of your product is affected
