SteamGAF GOTY Results Are In (Finally)

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Welcome to the second annual NeoGaf Steam GOTY Award. This award is given to the game that SteamGAF has considered to be the best title of 2014. Due to the incredible MRORANGE being busy, results have been delayed until now. A call for "recount" votes was sent out on March 10th, but was closed on March 12th when MRORANGE sent me all of the original votes.

Before I go into the numbers here is a reminder of how the results were determined and some statistical data.
  • Up to 5 games were allowed for each person to pick.
  • Each game was either awarded 1/2/3/4/5 points in descending order.
  • Games had to be released on Steam in 2014. Games re-released during the year were also allowed.
  • Overall the poll turnout was: 179 voters
  • Total points tallied: 2643 points
  • Points awarded to ineligible games: 95 points
  • 150 games were represented
  • Voting was open from January 2nd - January 10th. "Recount" voting was also open from March 10 - March 12.
  • If a user submitted more than one vote, their newest vote was used and all previous votes were invalidated.
  • If a user voted for the same game multiple times in a single vote, the highest point value was used.
  • If a game was tied in points the 'average point score' (APS) determined who the winner was.
  • Modbot was banned from voting, due to the fact that he is a bot.

So without further delay, here are the results of SteamGAF’s 2014 game of the year awards starting from 10th to 1st place:

Divinity...well deserved. Such an amazing RPG with an amazing turn based combat system. Not without it's faults, but damn was it refreshing to have an RPG that doesn't handhold you through everything.

A solid list overall.

No one voted for Dragon Age Inquisition? That's incredible.
edit: The game is obviously not on Steam.

The rules stated that the game had to be released on Steam in 2014. There were a few people that still voted for Dragon Age, but those votes had to be disqualified.

Did Dragon Age not get counted? It didn't get released on Steam last year? I don't understand.

Edit: Damn, Origin only. Didn't know that.

It's funny seeing the number of games that got exactly one person to vote for them, and that person listed the game as their top choice.

Really great list. This is much more in line with my tastes than a lot of the GOTY stuff from around the rest of the web. (Couple console games that would be on my proper list, which is obviously out of scope here, but I really like the variety here.)

Kind of shocking that Dark Souls 2 made it that high considering the kinds of vitriolic garbage that's been said about it.

We went from a year where BioShock Infinite almost won to a pretty solid lineup.

Well done Steam GAF.

In a banner year for the genre, Dragon Age probably wouldn't crack the top ten anyways.

I didn't even see a voting thread, but the game I would have voted #1 won. So cool.

Grimrock 2 should have been way higher though.

The only disappointing thing is Might and Magic X not being in the top 10. It's on sale now, buy it, play it and be amazed.

Who else voted. This was my number 1.
I did of course. It was my #5.

I feel bad for winning Divinity because I'm sure someone else would of actually liked it. I found it to be really damm boring, but that's just because it's not my type of game.

Valkyria Chronicles and The Evil Within were robbed.
Jokes aside, that list seems pretty okay.

I'm not really surprised that I was the only person that voted for Sherlock Holmes, but I'm pleasantly surprised that more than three or more people voted for Silence of the Sleep other than me.

Really? It got a lot of coverage when it came out last summer.

Keep in mind that it's a PC exclusive. People that don't bother with PC games probably never even knew it existed.

It's mostly a disappointment only in comparison to previous Souls games. When you start comparing the worst Souls game with other games though, it'll still do well. It received the most votes out of any game in the list so people did like it widely, but had vastly lower APS than Divinity and even Wolfenstein (though only slightly so).

Now I want to see a miracle, Bloodborne winning this same vote in 2015 or 2016 because that'd mean..

Very true, mad I wasted a vote more than anything, even though it was low in the 5.
