Why didn't anyone ever tell me black mold is fatal?

So basically I've been living in my current apartment for years. I live here specifically and directly in relation to my short commute time to work, and the fact that the street-level noise is near non existent. In general, I consider myself basically a low maintenance tenant who just wants to drink my booze, play my games, fucking sleep, and get the fuck out when I need to work.

The yelp reviews for my management company are about the worst you could ever imagine. Had I known beforehand I probably would have gone somewhere else, but eh, fuck it. They're historically bad about fixing anything but so what, I just wanna be left alone to my liquor bottles and porn anyways.

So from day one I've had a leak in my bathroom ceiling stemming from the tenant above me. Basically any time they ever showered it would rain down in the bathroom. I didn't consider it urgent since it was over my tub anyways, so the leak would just pour down my drain and I would just shower in between the downpours. Serious. However after the first year, pieces of plaster and wood started falling down on my head so I decided to finally complain, and sent some horrific pictures to go along with it. Long story short, it took forever to get anyone in here and they did a half ass job of replastering, but the root problem from above was never resolved. It still downpoured every time they showered. It was such a damn pain in the ass to get their attention the first time, so...

I said fuck it, YOLO. What's an eye sore anyways? Long as I can sleep and make money I'm good. Years pass and now there's a full blown spore colony on select patches of my ceiling. Occasionally I would spray Windex or something on it just for, you know, sanitary purposes.

So about 3 weeks ago I'm casually on the phone with my father after getting out of the shower, and the black patch on the corner of the ceiling was looking particularly gruesome that day. I swear it looked like it was fucking moving. Maybe because I had just played RE7, but I was wigging out. I asked my dad for advice beyond spraying some Clorox/scalding hot water/whatever I could find on it.

Dad: "what does it look like?"
Me: "I don't fucking know. Mold?"
Dad: "no, dumbass. What color is it"
Me: "Black. It kind of lo--"
Dad: "black mold is lethal."
????
"Can you hear me, dumbass? Black mold can kill you."
Me: "I'll call you back"

So I frantically hop on Google, losing my fucking mind at how serious this shit really is and envisioning the fucking clickers from Last of Us and the fucking exploding bloaters and cordyceps on my brain.

Urgent APB to all parties involved that I could think of. Even with all that, it still took time to get the super in.

The reason I'm making this thread is because of the guilt factor. It was a one man hack job and he came equipped with a little spray bottle of bleach and a slop bucket with stained tools, paint, and plaster. It was horrific. Everything involved smelled like shit so I dipped out to get a bagel and flip through Tinder. When I came back I shit you not he was hacking his lungs out and making weird noises. Everything I read on Google says this shit can kill you and there he was with no facial mask or eye protection and just slopping some shit on with his bare hands !!! I offered him some sink water but when he finished he just kind of stumbled out.

So here's the kicker. Another week since then has passed and I just can't get the weird noises he was making out of my head. Was I breathing that shit in all along? I was marching home triumphantly from the gym this afternoon, and as I turned the block to my street, I could hear hacking, snorting, and spitting even through my Sony Xtra Bass headphones. I can't say for sure but I think it was the super! I'm just picturing him hunched over some trash bins, spitting up black shit and walking into walls.

Should I track this dude down and tell him to go get checked out or what??

I got a bit of a mold problem in our bathroom too because the old-ass tub is just so poorly designed that water collects in pools and just sits there. Whomever caulked around the edges did an awful job. Calling to get this fixed on Monday.

Mold ain't black yet, but it's not exactly a nice shade of brown.

For real? Water damage doesn't just go away.

I had mold in my bathroom on the ceiling too, small spots. Vinegar works, but eventually I got some anti-mold paint and it hasn't shown up since. Used to get sick/sore throat and always thought it was due to that mold, haven't had problems since. In my case the mold was a result of humidity clinging to the ceiling, since there is no heater in this stupid bathroom (dumb landlord...).

But yeah don't mess with mold. If you ever see some on your windows, at least vinegar will remove it fairly easily. But if it can become encrusted in the surface, like bathroom ceilings, not much you can do but bail out, especially if it's from a leak, or if it your house then obviously renos.

Incredibly Naive
My sister's house is likely being torn apart or even torn down just 1 year after moving in. Turns out the owners covered up black mold and somehow the inspectors missed it. I guess it's taken over the vents and all the furniture and clothing in the house is ruined. Gonna be a loooong process.

I was reading the other day that they think mold might have been what ultimately did in Brittany Murphy and her Husband.
It's not to be taken lightly.

God dammit OP.

OP, you need to contact your landlords ASAP. You should have done so years ago and not let it get that bad. Yes, I know you already contacted them, but what they've done so far is no where near enough to resolve the problem. If your landlord won't handle it properly, you need to escalate rapidly with your city (health department) and/or with a lawyer - if you go the lawyer route, be sure to document everything and keep copies of any communications you have with your landlords. Mold is a serious (but not necessarily acutely deadly) problem both to your health and the health/safety of the building, especially to the extent you're talking about it.

Also yeah, you need to read-up on mold my friend. Your methods of handling this situation were doomed to failure.

You are fine, and your super is fine. You'll all be fine. Chronic exposure or allergic reactions can cause bad symptoms. If you weren't feeling ill, you won't be, and any acute symptoms your super displayed were probably due to bleach fumes.

black mold and mold that looks black are two different things. Chances are, you just had your run of the mill mold BUT it's still not good to breathe

This is a classic GAF thread. Yeah, getting mold is bad and you certainly shouldn't live with it. It's not exactly anthrax though.

Your dad called you a dumbass?

There are people who's dad hasn't called them a dumb ass one time or another?

Hey, so uh, not to change the subject or anything like that, but...

Do you guys think I could get some free rent out of this or...?

I hope you get that taken care of ASAP OP. the health implication aside, how can you live with that bad of a leak and that bad of a mold problem? I have a friend like you who just ignores these kinda basic sanitary issues and I had enough horror stories from his old room alone that if I tell them here at least a few GAFers here will die because they'll try to jump into boiling hot water just to sterilize themselves.

No. You are fine. Get some bleach and clean it. The mold is not fatal nor is it "toxic". If you lick the mold you might get sick; don't lick it, clean it. Get your landlord to fix the leak though.

Wow I'm surprised this didn't end with Docpan beating the super in a fit of repressed rage. Or maybe that is still to come?

I don't think I've lived in an apartment in Oregon that didn't have mold in the bathroom or near windows in it. Never had a case as bad as OP, where shit was falling down, but it almost seems inevitable to deal with it in this part of the country. It's gross and it isn't super healthy, but it probably won't kill you in 99.9% of cases.
