Buying a DS, what games to get and how do I get homebrew action?

Ok GAF, after years of waiting I am getting a DS.

What are the best RPGs out. What are your favorite games and what do I need to get my homebrew on. I was going to go through an old thread but i havent kept up to the DS world and I need some updated advice.

I have had a killer time with new super Mario bros and for home brew I would get the datel games and music card found in walmart for $20. It only does home brew so no pirated games but it works well for the price.

'tis sad how the whole term was ruined. I'd say "Indie" should get more usage, but most of the homebrew games fall more into the amateur category than indie, and I don't see any homebrew devs calling themselves amateurs anytime soon.

Get a Datel Games & Music device for $20 from any Wal-Mart.

It lets you play all the DS Homebrew but doesn't work with pirated DS games.

but only the naive believe otherwise though. out of 100% that asks for homebrew, only 5% mean real homebrew. the rest 95% uses it as a euphamism for piracy

Last I heard, you can't save to that though. So forget about playing any homebrew apps or games that require writing to the game card.
 
mm, basically you want a flashcart for homebrew. plenty of sites to find stuff out about them, www.gbatemp.net being the best I know, since it constantly updates its homebrew database with the latest versions, and it reviews flashcarts. for a flashcart, r4/m3 simply, or, and I'm going off of gaf's impressions, games n' music work well. I use an r4 and prefer it because it has auto-dldi patching, meaning you won't need to run your HB through any silly patching utilities. not sure if games n music has it as well.

as for games, just use the 500 gaf threads previously linked. Or just get Pokemon and NSMB.
 
I never see it mentioned here, because it's probably a dirty word but Yu-gi-oh! world championship 2008 has been my most frequently played game for months.
I had a yu-gi-oh game on the GBA, but that quickly became boring with no one to play against. The DS version has wi-fi, with tons of people playing so you have an unlimited amount of human opponents out there.
I get my ass handed to me most times, but when I win it's god damn satisfying!

Yes, you can. I do it all the time. Every piece of homebrew I stumble across works on the thing. Granted, you have to ignore the Datel loader and use DS Organize or something else, but it works very well for homebrew.

So? It's an insult to those 5% (me included) who actually like homebrew. Homebrew produces some great games (just like the indie game scene on PCs... see N, which grew into a current popular game, N+... also see the IGF every year, which produces more and more great games).

All that aside, I'd like to see your proof. I don't know any people who call piracy homebrew. The people who I know that steal games freely call it stealing games. They're not ashamed to admit it, except maybe on GAF, where they'll get banned. But GAF is, how you say, a minority.

I think you're right. I'm sure the piracy problem is very minor, if not completely fabricated. In fact, I can't imagine anybody on earth anywhere resorting to this life of crime. I mean, I live in a completely honest world with sunshine shooting out of my asshole and the only tears I have are from laughing soy joyfully at the wonderful sounds of babies and kittens. Minority indeed.

I said GAF is a minority. I also said piracy exists. I also said pirates are not ashamed to admit they're pirates except for places like GAF, where they will get banned. And that GAF is a minority.

Speaking of homebrew, that stuff can't do anything while a real DS game is playing, right? i.e. there are no screencap apps, are there? That's all I'd really want in DS homebrew. Not being able to cap hurts. "/
 
Yeah, it's not possible, RK. It's possible on PSP because there's overhead firmware, but DS switches completely to game mode. The only way to screencap a DS game is to emulate, and you can't really emulate DS on DS. It's not powerful enough. (Obviously!)
