I don't know how much was your expectation, but its a mighty fine start only eclipsed by PS2 and only 50k below Wii ( which was launched during the holidays).

Monster Hunter: Frontier G was announced for Vita last year. That being said, it's primarily a handheld series at this point, as others have pointed out.
Why is there no Japanese indie scene?
Frontier isn't a real Monster Hunter game, and it's going to bomb on Vita.
Was there a ps4 japan launch thread? I dont remember seeing anything with long lines or any other crazy stuff that happens with console launches there.
I see that it did better than the PS3 at launch and I feel good until I see that the Wii U did the same.
When I say post launch, I'm talking each week following first week. PS4 managed to edge out Wii U despite being more expensive, launching in February, and no big exclusive launch title. However, not having these after launch hype dies down means sales could drop faster. Wii U had the benefit of launching in December to keep sales from falling below 100k for a couple if weeks. Add on the fact PS4 doesn't have much to look forward to in terms of software for the first few months, Wii U could easily start outselling it launch aligned.Er... why?
I'm not saying it won't have a steep drop-off, but the steepest drop-off you see in sales is always Holiday -> Post-Holiday. That's why (for example) the XB1 selling a tenth as much in January is only "deeply worrying" and not "completely cataclysmic". That's why even when the signs of trouble were clear as day for Wii-U, it took a while for people to really see them: the sales fall-off happened post-holiday, and was largely expected.
Expecting something released outside of the holidays to have a steeper decline than something released during the holidays is actually kind of silly. Consumers' buying habits this time of year aren't stacked as heavily toward needing to acquire merchandise by a certain date; they're more likely to buy things whenever their finances allow rather than rushing a purchase.
If you were looking for a sign of a potential drop-off it would be that Sony had pre-orders open for months and months in advance. That's a far more worrying sign for their week-to-week sales than the fact we're in the doldrums of winter.
My friend wants to order a PS4 and his games from Japan because he wants to play games in Japanese since its his native language and I told him that I think he could just buy a PS4 here (Canada) and just import his games and they should work fine. Was I wrong?
My ignorace, please understand.

He can totally do that.
Nope you were not wrong, the PS4 is region free so he can just buy the console in Canada and import the games from Japan. He can even make a Japanese PSN ID without any trouble.

Awesome, thanks I can keep my "knowledgeable gamer" cred.
Thats what i thought, I just told him that without being 100% sure.Wii,WiiU,3DS and 360 are not region free. If we talk current gen and last gen

From today:I'm not sure if this puts me on his level but that chump Noobsaur ever show his face around these parts?
I'd say about 90% of the predications I make pan out. I feel like I've been following the market long enough to see where things are heading. I could be wrong but I guess we'll see what happens. We had over a hundred big studios close down over the past gen and I don't see things getting better.
If I was patient enough I would have edited this but for now I think it will suffice.
There is a niche market of doujin games, but it's a lot smaller due to a number of factors. One, the language barrier that makes it more difficult for Japanese programers in general to find documentation and support. Two, the lesser popularity of the PC and PC gaming market in Japan. Three, the nature of the Japanese corporate structure that makes breaking into the game industry or CS field impossible without a decent college degree. So there's less of an incentive for people to turn their pet game projects into a full-time pursuit, as there's no hope that they could get hired with a good portfolio alone like western companies often do.
I went to GDC on a few occasions, and applied at the Kojima productions booth. While the other companies wanted to have one-on-one conversations with the applicants to talk about what sort of projects you've done in the past, here they simply handed you a form to fill out and attach your resume to. It was a checklist, asking you to rank your abilities in various programming languages and processes as being either 'Novice', 'Advanced', or "Expert". And that was it. I had a feeling they weren't hiring anyone who didn't check "Expert" for every question so I left.

I know I predicted somewhere that I thought (hoped) it'll sell between 600,000 to 1,000,000.
I was obviously wrong.
Meh.. still pretty good numbers for two days.

600,000 to 1 million consoles in two days is absolute madness for japan. come on, now. The PS2 is an EXTREME outlier in jp console sales- largely because it was the cheapest DVD player available by far when it launched and even non gamers were rushing to get one.
Awesome, thanks I can keep my "knowledgeable gamer" cred.
I read somewhere in this thread someone said this is like 90% sold from available stock? If so, that's good?

I'm obviously no expert in sales prediction field. Here was my thinking.
Japan is Sony's home court and if they can sale around a million units in other regions on launch day why not in Japan. I simply thought that my fellow Japanese gamers couldn't wait until that got their hands on the PS4.
What I didn't take into consideration
1) I'm not a Japanese expert
2) I'm no expert in predicting launch sales
3) No JRPG at launch
4) No weird sex/relationship building game
Edit: One last thing. This is a sales prediction thread. Why not be optimistic for something A LOT of us know little about.
I was wrong. The next time I predict something there will be a 98% chance of me being wrong.
I leave the facts and inside info to the members of GAF who actually know what they're talking about.
I was hopeful for numbers like that too, though I was thinking first week not first two days. In all fairness if the Wii can do 50k a week, I can only imagine what would've happened if Sony had launched the PS4 in Japan during the holidays.
Now, having seen this thread, let me take a second to respond to people claiming "I doubt these numbers" or whatever: If the 350,000 shipped number is right, then even if Sony sold 322k, that's STILL nearly 28k on shelves. 28k is a fucking LOT. If you had them all in one place you'd be shocked by just how many there are. 28k is more than enough to find a number of stores who still have 10+ consoles just lying around in various areas, take a ton of pictures and suddenly "Oh wow the PS4 isn't selling well."
That doesn't make it true, that just means that's how the perception is being created. This is still like the third biggest launch ever--a close second to the Wii and a distant third to the PS2, granted. But it's hard to expect much more when most people just bought the system and went home to play Knack, presumably because nothing caught their eye.
The game isn't over yet.
