999 the novel (iOS) launches March 17

I have 999 for DS (to play on my 3dsxl). However I haven't started it and my video game playing time is limited due to work and stuff. Does 999 on iOS save significantly more time and do I miss anything story related? I can live without the puzzles, really just want the story so I can play the sequel.

DS version is probably a better experience. The game isn't really long and there's no point rushing to the sequel because both games are just amazing.

The puzzles are not the reason why the DS version is completely preferable.

But there isn't a PC version

Oh he probably pirated it and emulated the game using some type of DS emulator.

Anyways, neat that it's on more platforms, but I do hope people interested in the game pick up the DS version instead, even if it is a tad pricier.

Glad more people with get to experience the crazy story. Try to play it if you can though. The game has some amazing puzzle sections.

Hmmmm...

This is pretty tempting, it sounds really interesting. But then again I said that about Phoenix Wright, and I never did get around to playing that. haha. I did play Ghost Trick though, and that was amazing, so 1 for 2 on DS to iOS ports I guess, haha.

Will it really make sense to buy this version? I imagine the puzzles were at least somewhat important in the original game?

They were.

I certainly expect some of the impact of some of the plot is lessened as you're just a passive observer and not actually playing a game, but it's probably still worth playing...if you're one of the minority of gamers who didn't ever own any model of DS(or 3DS).

To me, the pacing was slow and the puzzles were uninteresting. The game feels mechanically tedious. Meanwhile I loved Hotel Dusk and I'm currently enjoying the hell out of my first play through of the Phoenix Wright series.

I've even tried to play through 999 with a guide and I was just bored to tears trying to push through to the story parts.

If you can play the DS version in any form I highly recommend you do that, since I think taking out the puzzles (along with some other things that this version will do) takes away from the game.

I still might play this if I can though (i.e. if it comes to Android or if I can borrow someone's iOS device).

the game will work w/o the puzzles, it just won't have that much on an impact though.

Is the game a little like Heavy Rain, so that characters can die when failing a puzzle and the story would go on?

Because if that's the case then I might wait and buy it when I eventually get a 3ds

I hated the puzzles in the DS version so I wish this existed at the timed I played them. Will probably double dip to see if their port VLR to iOS eventually. I do have a 3DS but I'd rather play on my iPhone/iPad than it.

I think I've heard that they also cut the banter that happened during the puzzle rooms. That would be a rather significant loss, I think.

Well, I'm going to pick this up depending on the price. I'm already buying SMT1 and I don't have that much iOS credit left.

just played 999 on pc, tyhe ios version loss its appeal to me
Was he banned for this? I don't understand why if so. We've got threads about Dolphin, PS2 and PSP emulation and even DS emulation on Android. Why would his post suddenly be a problem? Normally people are given the benefit of the doubt that they own the game they emulate...

The characters can't die through the puzzles. However, the puzzles still have a big impact on the game's story, though I can't go into why without going into spoiler territory.

I bought 999 for the DS, but got stuck on the very first room. I thought I had tapped on everything and found everything there was to find, but when I looked it up
I apparently hadn't tapped the exact right spot on the pillow to look underneath it to find the other thing I needed.

After that I kinda lost my enthusiasm for the game.

I guess I'll just have to wait for impressions of the ios version

I kid you not, that's the worst puzzle of the whole game. They really didn't try hard to make a good first impression...

If you say so. Just know that the biggest twist is kind of ruined in the iOS version.

Inorigo will be happy I guess.

I'll try it out as well, but the puzzles missing seems rather lame honestly. It's still a good story though.

So how does this even work? I played through the DS version once and got the shitty ending but didn't find the gameplay compelling enough to replay it and get the 'good' ending and now I want to play VLR. Does the iOS version have multiple endings? Just the good ending?

Btw. don't look on the character pages if you don't already know the game.
HUGE spoilers over there and I mean it. Even if you don't know any context it will spoil most of the game.

I can relate. I had a shit time getting into it at first because the text was pretty slow (and the puzzles felt tedious).

I don't know how good/bad the upresed art is but so far it looks like a tradeoff between puzzles + the few dual screens moments on one side and streamlining (text speed + flowchart on the other).

Why would you even want to play VLR if 999 wasn't compelling enough for you to play it "properly"? Both games follow the same concept, after all...

If you played through it once, you beat maybe 1/5 of the main game. If you didn't find anything compelling about it, I can't imagine you'd like VLR much more.

Was it really only 1/5th of the game? Isn't it just the same puzzles each time but with a different ending?

hahah this makes no sense. You want to play VLR after not liking 999? Not to mention that 999 is superior to VLR.

If you want to get the good ending, you'll have to do more than one playthrough.

You go through different rooms with different puzzles and the story develops differently.
Each route adds new touches to some plot points, building layers that kind of come together in the true ending route.

Not at all. The only puzzle that will always be the same is the first one (which I'll admit, gets a tiny bit tedious on replays).

The story ties into replays, and the game isn't actually done until you get the true ending. There's a reason why most of the "endings" don't even have credits (though one of the bad ends do, which is kind of weird).

Oh, and this may not make a difference for you, but I actually didn't even like 999 until halfway through my 2nd playthrough. I was forcing myself through it before that.

Thanks for the info CB, I might just dig out my DS and keep playing it there instead of on iOS, see if I can get into it some more this time.

I don't mind the puzzles in the game, I just didn't like the lengths the game went to explain each puzzle to me before I could get started on it.

I really liked the sprite animations in the original version so I'm kinda sad that they're gone in this version, but anything to get more people to play this game is fine by me. How much does the Japanese version cost?

Also, the character pictures on the site have major spoilers. Did the person who chose those pictures even play the game, or did they purposefully choose those pictures to show off the more intense moments of the game?
