Did Sony set the stage for E3 2014?

Project Morpheus might be a long way from retail (and will probably be rather expensive), but surely Sony will talk about it more publicly at E3 on stage, which could generate a lot of hype, if the demos are impressive enough.

Nintendo probably won't react to the VR Headset at all, but will Microsoft? It's already rumored that they are also working on their own VR thing, will they also show it at E3?

Mix that with the fact that this will be the first E3 since all next-gen consoles (now current-gen) are released, which hopefully means games, games and more games and this could be the best E3 in years.

What say you, GAF?

I think there's a good chance Microsoft will react at E3. A very good chance.

This Sony VR stuff is going to spread everywhere in the news soon. Gaming media and mainstream media.

Damn can they increase their time though?
They gotta talk about the PS4, the PS3 which is still going on strong, and the VITA. They barely have time for all 3, now this?

Sony just proved they've got their foot in the door w/ VR. I think E3 2014 is going to be more epic than 2013.
VR + 1st party = WIN

I hope it doesn't dominate their showing at E3.

Spoiler: they aren't going to talk about PS3 or Vita.

Sony is going to have demos of the VR tech tomorrow. Unless Microsoft has something already in the pipeline there won't be enough time to react substantially.

Yeah, they have full three months to bring a VR device.

I think last year was the best e3 in years. It won't be topped for a long time, if ever.

Oh this year will be far crazier I gurantee it.....an E3 with two launching consoles is nifty...an E3 with two companies now trying to prove themselves, with one backed into a corner? Shit is going to be crazy

Yup.

I do hope they're able to give a more concrete timeline for VR at E3, as well as show some significant software that utilizes it. Not sure if that's a reasonable expectation though.

I don't think Sony knows they make a product called the Vita, so swap that out for VR and you've got a nice program for E3

They'll probably minimize the time they talk about the PS3/Vita and focus more on PS4/Morpheus as that is the newest things with the most to prove. PS3/Vita just need content announcements basically.

I thin they shouldn't talk too much about VR if it's not ready to be on the market.

PS4 popularity inertia won't last forever without any reasons and no big sellers coming this year. They need to focus on announcing huge exclusives, and not let everyone think the PS4 needs a 3-400$ add on to be awesome.

I hope not, I think that Sony would be spreading themselves too thin. The PS4 just came out and there are literally only a handful of disc based exclusive games out and very few announced. Yes the PS4 is selling great, but they need to come out and slam down game after game after game that's coming to their new system that people just spent $400 on. What they don't need to do is spend a bunch of time talking about games for the system people just bought that they won't be able to play unless they buy a (probably) expensive headset.

More like "threw down the gauntlet" if anything. MS REALLY needs to impress.

Pretty much this. MS must have things in the works to impress because ~3 months is not enough time to get things greenlit through a mega corporation (especially Microsoft).

Wonder how MS will talk about Kinect with Sony showing of VR right next door.

A few days ago there was a thread about Sony not revealing enough, now they are spreading themselves too thin (not attacking you of course, just this odd mentality) I don't think Sony is spreading themselves to thin, if you want an example of that looks at MS with the Xbone reveal TV, Kinect, games and all this other stuff sent many mixed messages about their focus. All the while Sony has been about games games and more games. Now they are adding a supplement to their gaming focus with VR ( a natural complement to games imo) and riding the momentum and public mindshare to build awareness and hype for this product. This is very good timing from Sony as they have their "differentiator" from the Xbox One and it will be their big talking point at E3 (along with games of course!)

They've been working on once since 2010, minimum. Maybe earlier. I would not be shocked to see Fortaleza, a project they intended to release in 2014, gets announced at the biggest gaming event of the year, that happens midway into the year.

Microsoft is going to show their hand at E3, or sooner.

Dude! There is very little they could do at E3, UNLESS they took preemptive action and started prepping a VR device months ago, in response to the rumors of Sony's device. It would be too late for them to do anything now.

E3 is like 2 1/2 months away.

I think Sony has a more pressing need at E3 - what are the first party studios doing?

2014 is looking a little sparse for their studios.

Whatever they are doing it's working. It's March and I'm already stoked to see what they have for E3 2014. I don't know if it will be as big as the domination they did at 2013. Either way I'm excited and I don't even own a PS4.

Re: Microsoft- Fortaleza? In their original plan, wasn't that scheduled for this year?
If they've followed up on it, I expect at least a demo/prototype.

Truthfully no. THe project is still very obviously in the early stages of development, as they said multiple times in the presentation. We may get one or two third party teasers in a 5-10 minute blurb at this year's E3, but don't expect a full content blowout until Spring 2015. The only demos they even have at GDC atm are hastily cropped together from existing games and experiments. The announcement was made to get 3rd parties started now and hopefully have ready within an 18-ish month timeframe, but I highly doubt the VR solutions from either console manufacturer will be ready for primetime at this E3. More likely E3 2015, if that.

You guys think Devs will showcase VR content at e3? ehh that would mean they would have been working with it for a long time, which I find hard to believe. Sounds like something for e3 2015.

Expect fall 2014 and early-mid 2015 games,

Ugh, I hope they don't spend a lot of time on VR. Just seems like another gimmick and I didn't just buy a VT60 to end up wearing a stupid thing on my head.

Just give me exclusives, new console features and more things to look forward to on PS+.

I wasn't even hyped and was let down. No price, no technical details, no (new) games... I feel like I just watched some undergrads powerpoint presentation on Occulus rift...

According to their roadmap, fortaleza is just AR, not VR. I'd be shocked to see a working prototype at E3.

I can forgive

But they better show Eve Valkryie

They may announce a port of Valkyrie, but it won't be shown! They just announced the Morpheus. There won't be time by E3 to do a working port of the game. Unless, Sony approached the developer prior to the reveal.

I hope that neither Sony nor Microsoft focus heavily on VR at E3. It's still a long ways away and games should be the most important focus this year. It should always be about the games.

Watch them only show footage of Driveclub and 1866 in the exclusive AAA department.

E3 has been awful for like 8 years already. Can't remember the last time I was happily surprised at seeing a game.
