Yumi's Odd Odyssey (Umihara Kawase) is out on Nintendo eshop for 3DS!

at last, for christ's sake
maybe when its way cheaper, and the constant shitting on Yoshi in this thread isn't really helping your cause, you know

This game is easily worth a 100 to me. 30 bucks is a bargain.

Didn't really even pay that because of the 20% off eshop deals at best buy.

Anyone going for top times? Have you taken the top spot on any stages?

I'm ruling
Stage 8
right now. I guess that means not many people are playing. :p

Yeah, I've been trying to get good times on some of the shorter stages, got a few number one spots. Definitely means not many people are playing haha. I didn't think I would be into the speed running aspect of the game but it gets pretty addictive. Hope to see you on the boards!

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
Price is such a bummer. Honestly I thought it was gonna be 10 bucks, looks like an iOS game. :-/ but ill pick it up down the line.

Dunno what it is about eShop only localizations that get me so excited, updating the store like crazy, seeing the week old banners again, going to your wish list and OH SHIT IT'S OUT NOW, in my veins!!

Game is as delightful and as difficult as I wanted it to be. Not to step on Yoshi, but this one is definetly the "platformer of the month" for me.

BTW, does anyone know how do I unlock Young Yumi? When I learned that you get the old OST with her, I wanted to use her and no one else.

Is young yumi the seasonal one?

I don't think she is, since that out outfit gives you the Shun OST.

I still think the price on this game is insanely stupid, but I have to support a good thing when it comes stateside.

Not sure when I'll actually play it because I'm knee-deep in like 50 other games, but uh... I did my part. I'm sure the game will be fantastic.

Curious to see how well this thing actually ends up doing.

Argh, I feel I'm going to just bite the bullet too in support.
Should have been $20 for digital only.

Why does the OP bash Yoshi's Island? YI is a very fun, well designed game.

A lot of people don't think so? Users and press alike.

I'm really quite interested in this, it seems like a lot of fun and it certainly has a unique premise, haha. I'll probably wait until it hits $20, though I may splurge on this before a sale (I think it'd be worth $30 to me anyways). I'll have to look into it, might not have enough room in my budget for it right now. In any case, I hope the game turns out to be a success!

I haven't been able to play as much as I'd like so far, but I'm loving the game. Well worth $30--naysayers who want this game cheaper be damned. Considering I paid more for my Super Famicom cart, this is a steal.

I love how it's built with speedrunning in mind. Already got my first number 1 time on the rankings. Judging by some of these rankings I'm getting on my first attempts on levels, it seems like there aren't even 100 people who have this game right now.

$30 for a digital product on Nintendo's platform is just something I can't get behind. I hate digital as it is and nobody does it worse than Nintendo. If this were available at retail I'd be all over it. :\

There's a JP retail version available if anyone ever defeats the region lock on 3DS.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

That's the thing. I shelled out $60 for Umihara Kawase DS a couple years ago without a second thought. Felt like a good value then (feels like an even better value now, with the price increase and whatnot.) But you make it a digital game on Nintendo's platform, and suddenly, it feels like the game is worth $20 at the absolute most. Yet, I know if it was a $40 retail release, I'd plunk down the cash and beg for more. Shit, I'd have paid $80 or whatever for the Japanese release if that stupid region lock wasn't in place.

I dunno. It's weird how digital distorts perceived value so drastically.

But the reality is it would have been a costly risk for Natsume to take going retail with it. This really boils down to either digital or not getting it at all. The same applies to what happened with Ace Attorney 5. I'm grateful that we get it versus not getting it.

Yeah, really a bad way to do what is a (semi) OT for a small game that needs support.

I'll take New Yoshi over this game in a heartbeat anyways.

You YNI folks are so awfully defensive.

I understand that, but as a no-name platformer in a digital market that's full of bad platformers that are like... $5-10, I don't know why they thought $30 was a valid price. I guess my issues with the price have less to do with my own lack of interest in paying $30 for the game (seeing as how I bought it as soon as I got home from GDC and was able to do so), but it's frustrating that they're basically tanking this game's chances in the States.

I forget how many it takes but you just have to keep collecting backpacks, I'm pretty sure you unlock her after the Seasonal costume. She also uses the Shun OST.

To be fair, digital releases on Nintendo platforms really do have less value than otherwise since they're locked to the system, not to mention the standard inability to lend or resell that's part of digital games on everything.

Glad to hear that people are enjoying this. I got the DS compilation game when I arrived in Japan, and I picked this one up a few months ago, and, despite missing the sprite graphics a bit, I really do like this one the most of all the games. The physics are slightly different in each version, but they work well here, and the fact that you don't have to start over from the beginning each time you play helps, since I don't have the patience to replay every stage a million times. I don't know if it was fixed from the Japanese version, but if the framerate really sucks, turn off the 3D and it will play just fine. There were levels where it was almost unplayable with the 3D on, which is a pity, since I think it looks pretty good.

It hasn't been fixed. This is a 3D off game if you know what's good for your play experience. The difference in physics between the Super Famicom version and this one was throwing me off at first, but I'm becoming more used it now.

Bit the bullet and downloaded it at full price. Love quirky 2D Japanese platformers, so I'm all over this. I honestly don't know much about this game (or series?), but it seems like people who have played one iteration or another have nothing but cool/good things to say about it. I also picked up Yoshi's New Island on 3DS, hah! I'm in between like a 1,000 games right now and I haven't had time to invest in like any of them. There's just been too many weirdo niche games grabbing for my attention as of late (got Deception IV, that witch and the whatever knights game and Dynasty Warriors 8 for PS4 next week too) which I'm like not ready for either, ugh.

Yeah, something like that for me too. Watching this, though, makes me feel so bad: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm22794920

Heh, you probably shouldn't feel too bad, 'cause that says it's tool assisted.

... Not to say there isn't some crazy human play out there.

Probably gonna try to 100% the game before I tackle getting good times on stages. Still a lot of techniques I need to work on before I can even dream of getting decent times.

So those who have been playing it: how does it compare to previous Umihara Kawase games? I'm hoping that they haven't lost the spark that made the SFC and PS1 games so good.

I've been playing the sufami game for a video I want to make, and this feels a lot stiffer. Like it's harder to make her swing from neutral and the bounce is slower and less, uh, bouncy? I don't know. It's definitely changed. Slower all around for sure, I'd say.

Odd Odyssey is good, though. Whether or not it's worth the $30 depends on you. I think's it's more than worth it, personally.

These empty leaderboards are a little depressing, lol. Have seriously only three people beaten the 2nd crab boss?

I popped in the original SFC game today because I'm loving this 3DS game. I never beat the SFC game because I sucked, but the individual level gameplay in the 3DS game has given me enough practice to be decent. The original looks and feels way smoother and faster in comparison though, Is Yumi's not 60fps? I imagine it would be...

$30? Game looks interesting and I really want to try it out.

But at that price? nooooooope.
It's easily worth it, this was a retail release in Japan after all. I've already put more hours into this than both of the 3DS Mario platformers, not to mention it is better than those :)

Didn't realize Shun is on JP PSN. Gonna try to play it later tonight for the sake of comparison.

The hook in Yumi is definitely less stretchy than in the SFC game, though. I feel like the levels are generally more difficult in Yumi, mostly because they can afford to make them more difficult thanks to level select.

This thread made me go back and practice the first level of the SFC version, since I remember using the fast path in a playthrough before. It's amazing how much thought's put into designing both the physics and the levels themselves, to the point that there are two equally useful approaches to the opening stage. This eShop edition's next in my backlog for sure.

It's only 30 fps and drops to around 15 in 3D. I assume the original was 60.

Ah yeah, I didn't notice that it was TA. Still, not having played the games in this series before, I'm still getting used to the controls in contracting and expanding the line. I hope that some day I can pull off the moves in that video or like this:

I wonder if Giant Bomb will ignore this eShop release like they normally do, because I'd really appreciate a quick look.
$30 may seem steep, but chances are good you would have to pay at least double that for a used copy of the earlier versions on eBay.

Of course they will

I'm top on 4, 6, and a few others that it doesn't look like anyone has played yet since they're all busy jerking off over the first few stages' time trials.

I'm nowhere near the level of the Japanese players, though.

PS - You can slingshot yourself by hooking the ground, running away, pulling yourself in from neutral and then going into a run in the same direction. It's the same speed you get by jumping onto a ramp.

Played the first couple of stages, game's awesome! The hook/mechanics definitely take some time getting used to though. I'm nowhere near understanding how to handle myself properly yet, lol! Some of those backpacks are tough to get as well. Scaling walls feels oddly satisfying too. Definitely digging this!

That's honestly an insult to iOS games. This has to be the ugliest game I've seen this year. I'm not saying that the game doesn't look really fun or anything...

Messed around a bit in Umihara Kawase Shun.

In general, I'd say the most noticeable changes between the two games are that in Shun, Yumi moves a lot faster and can swing much more effectively, though she reels in the line more slowly, and the line is springier.

also i'm a lot worse at shun
