I'm having a hard time playing Tomb Raider (2013)

This iteration is mind-numbingly dull and easy. It tries it's best to scrape up ideas from other popular franchises instead of being itself. To avoid this hyperbole nonsense, it's not terrible, but it's not what I wanted in my Tomb Raider.

I read that in Camilla Luddington's voice. lol

As did I..

But back on point.... I thought the game was very true to the series. It could have been more fleshed out. But overall it was a awesome game. The QTE's do start making less of a appearance as the game goes on and goes more towards combat. And I loved the part when
she starts to dual pistols at the end.
was awsome

You mean the ones Uncharted helped popularise?

The set pieces in the Uncharted series is nothing more than smoke & mirrors designed to mask it's shadow gameplay It's a fun series no doubt about it but let's stop attacking Tomb Raider for stuff the Uncharted series is also guilty of.

Gameplay is such an afterthought in the Uncharted series that they had to release a patch for Uncharted 3 just to fix the aiming. 15 minutes of decent play testing could of told you the aiming was fucked.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but that doesn't mean you have the right to be a hypocrite about it.
I can't take you seriously. You're fine with Tomb Raider wonky controls and aiming but have a problem with uncharted 3's?

Uncharted 3 aiming "problem" was that it wasn't as good as Uncharted 2's. It was functional. I beat the game on both hardest difficulties and didn't have a problem with it.

Also... shitty mechanics that Uncharted popularized? Probably because Uncharted DID THEM WELL.

I was laughing hard whenever Lara did something and OMG she fell again. No, she's fine. Nevermind.

Also laughed when her mentor
dies in the most stupid manner. How hard is it to push Lara away and dodge the freaking axe?

Tomb Raider 2013 tries to be Uncharted. And it fails at it.

I won't even talk about how insanely shallow the tombs are in this game.

TR is a good game. But that's it. It's good, not great.

The prototype shadow of the colossus style games seemed so interesting compared to what we got in the end.

The game uses less QTEs as it progresses, however the story gets awful.
I remember that part near the end where she gives the injured guy on the ship a gun while crying and he says I'll distract the two enemies shooting us while you run. She'd killed 50+ people to get to that point, why is she crying and running lol?

OP - are you age-appropriate for this game?

Compared to the MK (I think) death where one of the women is sliced up via the groin by a circular saw while thrashing & screaming, Lara being impaled on spikes is pretty lightweight.

Plus - you get to go totally Predator with her and the bow later in the game. Nicely satisfying headshots.

I'm in the same boat.
It's just really unpleasant to play a game where EVERY TIME YOU MESS UP, your main character dies in a ridiculously graphic way. The story is also balls.

The game itself is decent, though. The actual gameplay feels solid and the graphics are really good.

Some gaming death scenes will never leave my brain.

The one where Lara is
struggling against the rapids or sliding down a cliff and gets impaled through the neck looking confused, scared and flailing her arms
is one of them.

Yeah, some of the death scenes are a bit much. I saw the one where her head gets impaled on a spike while she's being washed down a river too many times. EDIT: Yeah, that one. :P
Yeah, I loved the game, I really have no idea where all the hate comes from here on GAF....

Tons of people on GAF decided it was going to be terrible long before it came out.

it's not that

Mortal Kombat is a game about that stuff. You expect it, it fits within the game's context, it's what you go there for

there's absolutely no reason for Tomb Raider to cut to this:

when you die there, multiple times

it's stupid. Gore is great when it makes sense, here it's completely stupid, in bad taste, and just weird as hell

it adds nothing to the game and it ends up feeling like some weird-ass fetish type stuff of seeing a hot girl getting annihilated in various ways for no reason at all other than being edgy or something

Uncharted 2 has way better shooting mechanics and actually very interesting combat scenarios. The whole train section is really good and way better than anything in TR. I don't think Ucnharted 2 is that great, but it really does well what it tries to do.

Tomb Raider shooting sucks, the scenarios sucks and the plataforming sucks. And they added a whole new stupid layer of collect-a-ton shit that is very common these days which also sucks.

You must have started with Underworld.

It adds nothing to the game? It was the most brutal game I've ever played :)

so the game was better because you got to see Lara Croft impaled?

I just dont get it, am I supposed to go "OH HELL YEAH THIS GAME IS AWESOME" when a spear goes through her neck?

it's not about being squeamish or not tolerating violence. When dr salvador comes at me with a chainsaw I expect Leon's head to pop off and I laugh when it happens. I don't expect a game like Tomb Raider, being as mild as it is to that point, to suddenly present me with shit like that. It's completely out of place and unnecesary.

What bothers me is that they cheaped out and used that death sequence for multiple parts of the game. It isn't even that bad, TR always had violent ways to kill Lara.

The violent deaths are supposed to be a continuation of the "brutal environment/situation" she finds herself in. At least that's what I assume they were going for. I just kept playing when I died, because it's a video game and silly shit doesn't upset or offend me.

I had a hard time not playing TR 2013. i bought it and played through on ps4. xbone, and pc.

I didnt like the excessive amount of gun play but more for gameplay reasons not moral.

we're trying to discuss the thing. going "c'mon it's a videogame" would basically make 90 percent of gaf pointless

I only saw that once ;)

The MK one represents a far, far more fucked fetish than TR IMO...

It's Mortal Kombat dude

I mean how do you even make a comparison like that fair. Mortal Kombat invented that stuff, you know what you're in for. It's not about how fucked up it is, it's about how out of place it feels.

I discussed it in my first two sentences, re-read it for my take on why it was included in this video game. My last sentence was explaining my personal position on it, which is "I didn't give a shit about it, it didn't phase me."

Every time Lara dies by the environment, I just burst out laughing. I am a terrible person.
I took a screenshot and uploaded it to my Steam feed every time I found a new gruesome death. Whoever looks at my Tomb Raider pics collection could think I'm a psycho, but I don't care :P

Guys guys it's a video game let's not have a discussion about it, wouldn't wanna do that here on neogaf

It's not very good. There are kernels of good ideas, but they weren't executed very well. The puzzles and platforming are insultingly easy, the "exploration" is thinly veiled bullshit, there's nothing interesting to find and the environments are not that large, and the script is almost Max Payne 3 tier bad.

Yea I'm sick of people saying TR is terrible. Such hyperbole. You don't like it? Fine. It is NOWHERE close to being terrible. Far opposite, in fact.

Let me guess, this isn't the only game you love that you're sick of people saying it's terrible.

Apart from my parents shouting "Turn the porn down!" I found the game enjoyable. The deaths made me look away or cringe, but you get used to it

So you would say that watching videogame violence eventually desensitizes you to it? :)
I agree, even though I'm in the vast minority in these forums.

Awesome, why don't you guys go ahead and just insult the whole development team, you're definitely both winners.

Disagree. That looks awesome. Lora deserves a giant pole in her face for QTE failure. Maybe next time she'll get the point.

I don't think its out of place given the context of the game and setting, whereas the MK ;) one was just nasty - Saw or Human Centipede nasty.

Maybe I find someone dying by being impaled on a natural feature less disturbing than than someone being murdered by a circular saw.

Like you, I was initially put off by this game. The tone was gross. The QTEs were annoying. The story was silly. The setting was groan-worthy. It's a game that gets in its own way in the beginning. But once it finds a rhythm and ditches the idiotic storyline, it's really quite good.

Give it some time. Give it a few hours until you get to the exploration hubs. There isn't a lot of combat in the game after those opening sections, and after those opening few hours, there also aren't a lot of those annoying QTEs.

Guys guys it's a video game let's not have a discussion about it, wouldn't wanna do that here on neogaf

Guys guys let's completely miss the fact that an interpretation was given for the deaths, followed by reasoning, followed by a personal view on it.

Let's shit on the post instead because that takes less mental effort.

The death scenes felt like a homage to Resident Evil 4, which i liked :)

they also shamelessly stole the wolves of RE4'S labyrinth garden in the castle (and the church in the village prior to that)

Tomb Raider and action/horror doesn't do it for me. :(

Awesome, why don't you guys go ahead and just insult the whole development team, you're definitely both winners.

Im not calling them names, Im saying they made a game that sometime feels like it was made by trying-too-hard teens that wanted to make shit edgy or shocking for the sake of it

I played the game, im just judging it. No one's throwing death threats here, im just saying: do fucking better, the game is embarrasing.

The whole "atmosphere" is so manufactured. It feels like Cabin in the Woods where you're expecting the director to pop out and be like got ya! The first part when you get the bow and arrow, my girlfriend was like, is this a trap? Perfect planks leading to the perfect weapon for this scenario. The game is so surreal and artificial, the one guy who has to try to run off only to get shot, the gore just seems to be another added thing. Even the bad guys aren't really menacing and only really want to stroke Lara's face. Then Lara goes Rambo and starts brutalizing dudes.
