Amazon FireTV Announced and Released [$99 box, $40 controller, game capable STB]

I talked to customer service about this when it was announced. While there is a USB port, right now, it doesn't support external storage via either a thumb drive or a hard drive. The controller is also only set to work for the PlayTV. I went into more detail in an article on HG.

That is unfortunate if it were in that position permanently. One of the reasons I purchased the device was in the hope of playing my existing Movie/TV/Music collection.

I could just use Plex, but that just adds an extra level of complexity to the whole operation.

Voice control and lots of TV, android-quality games. Now where have I heard this before?
It's the offspring of an Ouya that had sex with an Xbone!

I had one in my cart along with a controller until I talked to customer service. Less than 8GB when you factor in the OS and such for a platform hyping up stuff like Modern Combat 4 and Asphalt 8 just isn't realistic. Sure, in the long run, they can fix that problem, but the "long run" for an Amazon product is about a year, and I can easily get my MC 4 fix on the OUYA with a tiny bit of tinkering. I do love the idea of voice-controlled video viewing though - this being an entry-level device for that is fairly exciting.

Two request please from you guys in the states

Could you please check can you manually change DNS settings (important for us UK folks to access USA content)

Also can you see if you can access any DLNA clients, like a NAS etc

Does it have a web browser? If no, why not?

No, according to the Fire TV's app development docs, it does not have a web browser. As for "why not", probably because of the lack of a mouse or keyboard.

Btw, you *can* side load Android apps onto the device if you put it into developer mode, but of course the app would only work if it already supported 100% controller play. And side loaded apps have their own menu, they don't show up in the main app screen.

No kidding. And how about Angry Birds? On mobile, free, or $.99. On Playstation, $40. On actual consoles you pay certain amounts because you expect certain levels of polish, quality, production, content. On mobile you pay much, much less, if at all, because you expect certain things from there. If you bring a mobile game to a mainline console, you do not price it as a real console game, because the platform hasn't changed the game in any meaningful way, it's just another place to sell it.

I hope that the Fire TV really pushes game support, I mean Amazon did buy some studios for just that. Hopefully it can propel those "mid-tier" games to the spotlight. AAA console games take millions of dollars to create and market, and years of development time. Mobile games typically cost very little to produce, and less time, but we're all familiar with mobile games and I don't think anyone wants a console to play them (sorry Ouya). What we need are games that harken back to the PS1/2 content era. By today's standards, the graphics may not be the best, but they're still a cut above mobile and give actual gameplay experiences that you don't see on Android or iOS. That's the kind of gaming I want to see return. If the Fire TV promotes that, I'm all for it. If that's not what it turns out to be doing, well, at least it did something different in the meantime.

This. I'm really hoping this is what it tries doing, I'd snap one up in a heartbeat if quality games of that sort proliferated on the platform.

So it has no SD slot and you can't use external storage:

"There is USB support built in, but support for USB hard drives or thumb drives isn’t supported."

http://www.hardcoregamer.com/2014/0...re-tv-streaming-and-gaming-set-top-box/80337/

That's hilariously awful. 8GB of built-in flash memory, no way to expand it and no way to connect external storage media / access external content.

So basically everything needs to be streamed and you don't even get the illusion of ownership, while you can't play any of your own non-Amazon media.
For their sake I hope this can and will be remedied with a new firmware.

This makes even Ouya look good.

You just described this product though.

That takes care of one problem.

One option would be to setup Plex Media Server and stream your local content that way.

Edit: To clarify, there is an official Plex app already for FireTV so it's a pretty simple solution to stream your local and owned content to the box.

Mine's scheduled to show up tomorrow, so I'll happily answer any questions once it gets here.

And apparently I get Sev Zero for free. Also, it appears they're using their own version of SpaceBux (Amazon Coins) and they gave me a 1000 for buying a controller. You apparently get 1000 for each controller you buy.

You should start gaming on pc. Been ahead of the curve for years.

Not too expensive anymore either. Check out the pc build thread.

I'm really not seeing the point of these android consoles when the low-med end android tablets are becoming so cheap.

Something simple to put on a TV, hide the cables, and always have it at a remotes control buttons push. Its something with an easy interface that the mom/wife can just use without being a technophile. The point is media consumption.

Yes you can plug a mini hdmi cable in to a tablet, but does it have a remote control? Is it ready at a seconds notice when you sit in front of the TV? That's the point.

Hit the nail on the head.

I'm a huge gamer, but I didn't even bother ordering the controller for this thing. I got this so my girl friend can easily watch movies and TV in a simple ecosystem.

Sometimes people have a tough time objectively looking at a product and seeing mainstream demand.

Saw it, was very tempted, as I've been looking for a quiet Roku or AppleTV style device for a while but never jumped in, but with no UK launch yet, I might just wait to see what the next AppleTV is.

Mrbob is right, Indie development or other PC exclusive games fit that bill exactly. Jump on in.

Lol no prob I'm already planning to. There's quite a few indie games I want to try. Was keeping my prospects for a PS4 open this year if Morpheus was '14, but since it isn't....

Will do sometime Mrbob.

Ours is still marked as preparing for shipment. Guess I should have sprung for faster delivery or something.

Has anybody had one shipped yet?

I got one-day and it says it's been delivered. I'm going to go pick it up in a bit when classes are over.

Any word on universal remote compatibility? Really sucks that the voice commands are tied to the remote. I really don't want more than one remote.

It will have Plex at launch so this isn't true.

Miracast does not support AirPlay :(

I wont give in my iPad just yet.
Oh I know, I meant if you're on the Amazon aide of the fence for tablets (or Android in general).

Iirc, unfortunately Apple has not licensed the video portion of Airplay. It's them or the highway

It's obviously not focusing on the gaming side of things. Just from a short glance, it appears to be far superior to AppleTV, Roku, or any other similar device. I think it will sell well.

It's possible that companies like Tell-Tale Games could do very well on this platform.

I expect they will add USB support, but yes it is disappointing to launch without.

That said, you can access local content on your LAN

My parents like to use the Roku so this might be a viable replacement/alternative for them. Although the Roku seems to be sufficient.

And what if you don't want to use an additional PC to do something it should support directly? There is no excuse.

Assuming you're playing your ripped Blurays and home movies you'd need a PC anyway. Since HTPCs aren't terribly popular among consumers it makes most sense to store that elsewhere and stream it yes?

Has that been confirmed?

Big oversight if true

There's no IR port. I think they said there would be a mobile control app though.

Hopefully, this will light a fire under Apple's ass and they release a AppleTV with the A7 chip, which will destroy this device. iOS 7 already has game controller support, and the much better quality iOS games could seriously be a disruptive force.

Forcing all games to be A7 minimum should result in decent looking games, probably as good as early PS3/360 games or close.

Does anyone have any experience using Plex? If I end up getting the Fire TV, it'll be used extensively for streaming my media, but I have zero experience with Plex, so any feedback on it would be appreciated.

Mine just arrived. It is (slowly) downloading updated firmware. Will post updates as I use it today. :)

Setup was easy, and it has a cute intro movie to explain the features. Voice search works well and videos load instantly, and come in at full res without any initial pixelation.

It recognized the wired Xbox 360 controller! Playing asphalt 8 now.

I actually setup Plex last night to stream to a Roku (which I think I will be returning for a FireTV) so I have a little bit of experience with getting it running at least.

I Airplay videos to my Xiaomi STB just fine.
And is that officially licensed, or an API hack?

IIRC, Airplay video hasn't shown up in any STBs, receivers, etc from traditional CE's. Obviously they aren't going to go the non-licensed route.

Search airtight.apk
That does bring up an interesting possibility. You can side-load onto this. Wonder if that would work?

Well that kind sucks. Hopefully enough people complain that it gets added in their next iteration.

Yeah I have 2 Plex servers set up (one from my lightweight NAS, the over from my server if I require transcoding lol). I'll give some feekback over the weekend.

I'm hoping their Fire client app is more Plex Home Theater, and less Plex Roku :p

Plex is far from complex though :)

It's rather simple ,I purchased this with that in mind since I already have a Plex server running. Having all the streaming stuff is an added bonus.

No support for IR if that's what you mean.

Most of the new logitech remotes support bluetooth as well, so I would prefer it not being IR in fact. That way you can hide it behind the TV. I just would like to use a logitech universal remote for this and not lose the voice command features.

Works like a charm on my Ouya.
Might matter how far back Fire was forked from Android? Not sure how far back airtight goes.

That said, I was kind of assuming it would work in terms of installing. I was more questioning how well side-loaded apps function in the UI itself? Are they easy to access? Can you just Airplay something and it would auto load on Fire? etc.

More of a usability question than anything. If it's too convoluted, it kind of defeats the purpose. I'll see if I can borrow an iOS device and test it out over the weekend.

I recently bought a Roku that I am returning to Amazon for this reason. I can't stand the Plex app on it. I'm going to buy a FireTV for Plex mostly (I figure no harm no foul with Amazon's return policy). From the few photos I've seen the app does look more like HT than Roku.
