My opinion.

ZSS awesome!!!! AND TOO MUCH POKEMON already!! Greninja completely unnecessary.

Besides awesome Direct with a bunch of information, and can't wait to buy my 2DS system just for this. Looking forward to the WiiU version much more now. The whole Direct footage were based on the WiiU version.

I'm loving all the changes they are bringing to this new Smash. Little tweaks in almost all facets of the game will hopefully make for the best Smash yet.

I really can't fucking wait for the 3DS version. I'm glad it's coming soon. It really seems to be pushing the hardware to the absolute limit and every mode and stage looks soooo good.

And man, portable Smash. Holy shit.

Man I remember when we thought Greninja was fake.
When the screenshot of Greninja first leaked, I thought he looked legit because he was so different from all of the fan art that envisioned Froakie's final form as some sort of bubble-bearded elder. But yeah, Greninja already being elevated to the Brotherhood of Smash is quite impressive. :)

Was there an actual leak?

I'm hyped for this. Getting both versions.

But again, I think Nintendo screwed up their game schedule.

Releasing the 3DS version so far ahead of the WiiU version could temper the hunger the WiiU version.

They should have done everything in their power to have Mario Kart 8 ready for last Winter too.

Oh well.

or it could convince some of the much larger 3DS install base to upgrade to the Wii U. I'm sure there will be some kind of deal for buying both games and I bet they really play up whatever connectivity they share. it might actually be smarter than the other way around but that all rests on what they have releasing for Wii U between Kart and Smash

so.

many.

buffs.

I love it.

I fucking love it. Sakurai is undoing the shitfest of nerfs from Brawl.

I have faith in him again.

We're talking about the run-up to X and Y. Screens leaked early showing Greninja and Hawlucha in battle. At the time, most people at GAF (and around the Internet) thought Greninja was fake, since everyone had thought Froakie's final form would be some sort of fat frog with a bubble-beard. Greninja actually makes more sense -- his elongated shape is a natural extension of Frogadier, and the idea is he licked the foam off of himself with the tongue that becomes his scarf (just like how certain species of of frog lick off their foam when they mature).

Nintendo would have been better off making this announcement at E3. Now it seems a lot longer for the game to come out compared to if they did it during June. WTF are they releasing between Mario Kart and Smash Bros? A Yoshi game that is also up in the air? X and Bayonetta don't count as other developers are working on those.
well, smash is being developped by others too, namely namco, so it shouldn't count.

Best thing to take away is custom moves. Fuck yeah.

Sakurai classy trolling with Ridley(flying shadow), Palutena(Pseudo), and Mewtwo(Greninja).

You know what this means if Ridley is a hazard. Other M version. Mwa ha ha.

no references? there was like 5 seconds of Ridley's shadow flying above the Pyrosphere...

and beaten like me in an online for glory match

I missed that part. That said, not showing the boss fight when they had no reason not to is suspicious. Not a Ridley proponent, though, so I won't mind eating crow if I'm wrong.

Oh. I see. It wasn't Smash related. I don't remember the leak for X and Y since I didn't really follow the games prior to launch, but this clears things up.

No.... I just realized Jigglypuff is probably gone....

no................

With Charizard on his own, Pokemon Trainer (and Squirtle/Ivysaur) is most likely gone.

But Jigglypuff who has been in every previous Smash?

I bet he's still in.

Greninja
Charizard
Lucario
Pikachu
Jigglypuff?

Doesn't seem that crowded for Pokemans.

Great direct, lots of info.

REALLY LIKED:
  • For Glory Mode
  • Flat Alternative Stages
  • The New Characters & All the additional character details
  • Custom Movesets (ability to adjust frame data for moves in some form would be amazing!)
Didn't like so much:
  • Winter for U version (had assumed thereabouts prior to direct announcement tho)
  • No new non-nintendo character anouncements this time
For me it seems like they are taking the Wii U version quite seriously in terms of getting it more tailored for Smash fans, while the 3DS version may be more accessible and better suited for those new to, or less familiar with Smash. I mainly got this impression due to the 3DS' version having that exclusive new game mode, which looks fun but I think is something that the traditional smash player would be less interested in. Also, when sukurai was talking about flat stages, custom movesets and for glory, it was Wii U footage they were showing.

i can't believe custom move set is in the game. a while ago, i told my friends that it would be a cool feature, and obviously they all agreed. the idea came to us when we were talking about all the moves kirby can do. so i'm glad it's in.

oh and kirby air ride mode!

only disappointment was that other pokemon, but i know some people are happy about it so whatever. overall still a great reveal

He was offered a higher up position (non-management, game development) at EAD Tokyo but didn't want to take it, according to Shikamaru Ninja. Guy would rather be free, even if it means he fumbles around managing a studio.
Didn't know that but it makes sense. Nintendo obviously wants to keep him with the company from their investment in Project Sora, but it being closed and him working with Namco to make Smash seems to suggest that development and not management how he works best.

I do get the feeling that Nintendo has known his potential for years since he was working at HAL and may be grooming him in someways to be Miyamoto's successor, at least that's my speculation. Even if that isn't the case, Sakurai has so many game ideas that are a great and fit so well with the games Nintendo makes that I wish some of his ideas spilled over into other games to influence Nintendo games he isn't directly involved with, somehow.

Quoting myself from the other thread...I hit a realization.

Smash Brothers Wii U will come out in the Winter, but we'll already know its entire roster by the Summer.

So far we haven't seen anything about colors. Could be because it's not important, but I'm hoping that the silence could also mean the possibility for a change. Why swap only colors when you can change the character's whole appearance?

Example:
1. Link
2. Toon Link
3. A Link Between World's Link
4. Skyward Sword's Link
5. Dark Link etc

Instead of having different pictures for characters like Link and Toon Link, have them in the Link character selection screen with the ability to change versions/colors with L/R/Select.

Mario | Sunshine Mario | Dr Mario | Jumpman
Luigi | Luigi's Mansion Luigi | Dr Luigi
Samus | Fusion Suit | PED Suit | Light Suit | Zero Suit | Military Dress
Marth | Roy
Pikachu | Pichu | Raichu | Emolga |
Bowser | Dry Bowser | Bowser's design on the final fight of Super Mario 64
Sonic | Classic Sonic | Sonic Boom Sonic
Megaman | X | EXE | Star Force
Snake | Naked Snake | Old Man Snake - (if Snake turns out to be in the game)
etc

This would guarantee no more "new additions" that turn out to the same character in another form. Unlocking Dr Mario and Pichu in Melee was just sad. Same characters with minor tweaks/nerfs, like Dr Mario and his pills instead of fire balls, Roy's special charge move, Emolga can glind, Naked Snake has more sex appeal than regular Snake etc.

We heard about 3DS exclusive features, how would you feel if something like this was a Wii U exclusive feature?

It would be really nice to import unlocks from version to version so we could choose to have a full roster on the Wii U version on day 1, or unlock them again at our own pace.

Yes ! This and custom movesets are what I wanted all along.

And that City Trial Smash is what I didn't know I wanted all along !

Also, I guess Greninja means no Jigglypuff ?

Edit : Oh, didn't see the picture above. Is that supposed to be a leak ? Hm. Greninja and Charizard being singled out is awfully precise.

Is there any indication as to if we will or will not have a more substantial campaign mode in either version?

Nah, this is nonsense. Mario Kart 8 is Wii U's biggest summer game. Releasing Smash so close to it would have been absolute overkill. Christmas 2014 for Smash U is just perfect!

...You did nothing to counter his point. A lot of wii u owners may also own a 3ds, having the 3ds version come out first may reduce sales of the wii u version as they might only buy the 3ds version since it comes out first. Not everyone is going to shell out the cash for both versions and I'm sure many will be happy enough with just the 3ds version.

I wonder if the Wii U and 3DS connectivity has something to do with unlocking characters from each version once the Wii U version is released. Technically, the no exclusive characters thing will still be true that way!
