I'm a huge fan of Ground Zeroes' theme "Here's To You", there's just something about it that really clicks with me, love it! Anyone else?

I love it! However, I actually prefer the Metal Gear Solid 4 version. It just sounds sadder, more melancholic. It truly gets me.

Finally

This is great. I just got back into MGS and I'm glad there's a thread for it.

I'd like to remind everyone about the current giant story marathon going live right now on twitch. They just about are finishing the Big Boss Saga and going into the Solid Snake Saga.

They're currently on Ground Zeroes.

Any MGO fans here? Metal Gear Online for those not in the know. Loved MGO1 and MGO2 especially. Really looking forward to the next installment on TPP. I'm hoping they release a beta too.

I spent 40 hours on the MGO beta.

Good times. I only played the retail release for like 10 though, for some reason.

I played a little bit of it in MGS4 before it got taken down. No real opinion on it though. Really interested what they decided to do for it in TPP.

And yeah a beta would be really cool. Maybe a bonus for those who bought GZ?

Despite the fact that I didn't really care for Peace Walker's Peace Walker twist I really enjoyed the inclusion of Sing.
I really like The Carpenters.

MGS2>MGS3>MGS1>MGSPW>MGS4

I could not get into the MSX games. They were alright.

I want to play both MGOs so badly but I never had MGS3 on the PS2, and I didn't get MGS4 till after MGO2 died.

I'll be there day 1 for MGO3 though.

That rankings are pretty clear to me:

MGS3: Favorite game of all-time.
MGS1
MGS2
MGS4
Peace Walker: It's disgraceful that this could've been considered MGS5 and even worse that some people are around here actually wish that was the case.

This right here.

If we are doing series history. Played the NES version of the first, borrowed from a friend, I remember liking it and thinking it had a super cool cover. Never beat it or anything, it was way too tough.

Years later I saw a preview of MGS in EGM from the TGS and I remember it as a sequel to that cool cover game from the NES days. The ideas talked about in the preview sounded like it could be the best game ever made. I got the demo from the magazine and played that for like 30 hours, best gameplay I had ever touched.

I bought the game day one and it lived up to the hype, it was the greatest game I had ever played up till that point. I instantly became a life long fan. I went back and played the first two MG games on emulators (I own them now thanks to MGS3). I have bought every main MGS game on day one and generally loved every single one. I did not have a PSP so I had to wait to play Peace Walker.

Besides Zelda no other franchise comes close to being as consistently excellent, every sequel raises the bar. BTW I play it cause of the gameplay more than the story, no other action/adventure game even comes close to having such interesting detail oriented gameplay scenarios. Out of the box thinking boss battles. Gameplay surprises around every turn. I have already put 30+ hours into GZ so I know MGS5 will continue that legacy.

I'm subscribing to this thread, I'm currently trying to beat a few metal gear games(Only ones I've finished are Rising and MGS3)

Currently playing MGS: Peace Walker and man the second fight with Peace Walker is a real doozy, I tried beating it before but I ended up running out of ammo for supply markers so now I'm grinding to try and get R&D levels up enough so I can start development of the LAW rocket launcher level 3.

Any tips for trying to beat this mission? The rest of the game has been pretty easy up to this point.

Played Ground Zeroes and loved it, bought MGSIV slightly before but haven't played it yet.

However, last week I saw that MGS2/3 were on sale for only £7 on the Vita and I believed they'd be quite nice to play in bed.

So, should I just do 2, 3 then 4? Also, what else is there that I should play? I know that there's three games prior to the first MGS but I really have next-to-no knowledge about this franchise (shamefully).

-edit-

I also have Revengence (PS+ be praised) and played it for a while, love it but one of those games I desperately need to finish. I feel like my backlog is way too big.

You are doing yourself a displeasure my skipping MGS 1, get it on PSN for vita.

I recommend playing MGS 1-2-3-4-PW in that order.

It is a very tough fight. I'd recommend 2 rocket launchers and your most powerful light machine gun, if you still can't beat it just grind up your inventory some.

I only got into the Metal Gear series after being consumed by the pre-release hype for MGS4. The games were never on my radar before that. Tracked down copies of MGS2: Substance and MGS3: Subsistence and thus began a long love affair. I also love MGS4, though it could have used a bit more gameplay. Especially because the gameplay they gave you was so good.

Rankings: MGS3>Peace Walker>MGS4>MGS1>MGS2>Ground Zeroes

Not that Ground Zeroes was bad, far from it. I just really love the other games, and they had more playtime to develop into my affections. As it is, once we throw The Phantom Pain in there, I think MGSV will supersede Peace Walker. It has the potential.

I don't get why Metal Gear Solid Snake gets no love in this thread. That game is THE best one of them all. Well, anything I say is of my own opinion, but that game's ideas were copied in future releases.

And where's Ghost Babel? That was good too!

Most people haven't played those, and in the case of the MSX games, find them way too hard to complete.

Ghost Babel is fantastic though, I'd put it right up there with the main titles.

I don't think people dislike it (I don't), it's just they like the other Metal Gear games more. MG2 is really interesting to play immediately before or after MGS1, just because there are so many similarities.

I played about 2000 hrs of MGO2. I care more about MGO3 than MGSV

Played the first Metal Gear on it's craptastic NES version when I was a kid. Dismissed it almost instantly as a "Rambo game" and didn't care too much about it.
I am the opposite. I think I got NES Metal Gear at a garage sale or something some time in the 90's. I didn't figure out the game very well (I mostly toyed with password combinations and was looking for the handgun), but it was still strangely engrossing and interesting because there was nothing to compare it to at the time. There was no Metal Gear MS to laugh at the NES port with, no MGS 1 to be my first Metal Gear game, it was a game about starting with nothing and trying to build yourself up from there which really defied a lot of my gaming expectations for an "action" game back then. It's basically a worse Zelda 1.

Then I saw Metal Gear Solid in the Official Playstation Magazine. My immediate reaction was, "Oh! They made another game like that one on the Nintendo! Looks like there is a lot you can do in this game too." It was not unknown to me despite having played an inferior port of Metal Gear that I never beat (I did get bits of the story from checking out the passwords). Once I actually did get to play Metal Gear Solid, several names were familiar to me. I knew who Solid Snake was, I knew Gray Fox, I even knew about Big Boss. It made the experience all the better.

Ok a but of a SNAFU updating the OP but here are the changes I made:

Added info on MGS Legacy Collection
Added info on Ghost Babel
Added info on Snake Eater 3D

Changed the banner font color to white. 1. to better reflect the MGS4 font and 2. You could barely see the text :p

Must resist renting PS3 version... Must wait till after summer internship when i got cash for PS4....

Happily subscribing to this one. A thread for my favorite series for sure.

My first MG experience was Snake's Revenge on NES; might've been my first action game.

My ranking of MG games is hard for me. Snake's Revenge is at the very bottom, and I still like that game a lot (it's the reason we got MG games past the one on MSX). I will say that I love MGS4, MGS2, PW, and PO. I do believe PO is cannon. Rising is fucking awesome (thanks Platinum) and maybe my favorite spin-off game ever. Ground Zeroes was worth paying full price for me on PS3, and I look forward to TPP and Rising 2 whenever they come out.

A few of the big reasons why I love this series so much is because of how in-depth and interconnected it all ends up being, how each title can be set apart from each other in tone, aesthetic and especially gameplay where I'm not totally retreading on a past title, the balls Kojima gives the story, and how much time I can spend thinking about all the little details of the games after I've played them multiple times.

Ghost Babel is an absolute masterpiece. It is everything MGS1 was put into 2D form. It is GIGANTIC with a shit ton of VR extras after the already long campaign. Its the best 2D Metal Gear game by far and possibly the best GBC game.

For the 2D format, how does it compare to MG2:SS for you? I can already tell you GB is a better game, but I'm curious how much better.

Nothing to be ashamed of. Temptation gets the better of us all. Haha

If you really want to rent it go ahead. I hear the PS3 version isn't bad. Then when you have money for a PS4, you can enjoy Ground Zeroes in its 1080p 60 fps glory.

I dunno why I decided to play MGS2 HD on hard. That Ray battle is as annoying and tiring as ever. I don't know how I did this shit on Extreme ten years ago.
