NPD Sales Results for April 2014 [Up2: XB1/360 hardware, PS4 #1/XB1 #2 best selling]

Normal mature markets have room for 3 primary competitors, known as the Rule of Three. If a market can not support three, then that isn't a mature market, it is a shrinking market.

does this apply in general? Look at iphone software its like ios android and yes windows exists but its at 3% according to recent results ... kind of like the wii u :S

I'm fascinated by how this industry is crashing. The amount of people that have left for mobile is amazing. I was shocked that people were saying that this generation was going to be bigger than the last. Can't see this generation coming anywhere close to the 250+ million of the last at this point.

Eh. It's not crashing anywhere. Handheld market is crashing but home console market is just going back to normal after abnormally big last gen. Wii made the market look bigger than it's. Now without Wii like phenomenon we are going back to PS2 gen like numbers.

Until they see the right game. Personally I think Arkham Knight is going to turn some heads.

Yeah, I think the amount of cross-gen games this time around has both hurt and helped the PS4/XBone. Helped them in that they justified early adopters in buying on day one (because it's hard to justify buying a new system when all the games you want to play are on your old one,) but hurt them in that the less hardcore crowd has a hard time justifying upgrading when all the games they care about are still releasing on the consoles they already have.

Which potentially gets you in a chicken-and-egg scenario where publishers won't stop making cross-gen games because not enough people have upgraded and not enough people are upgrading because everything is still cross-gen. But as you say, the handful of games from developers that are already dropping last-gen will probably be enough.

The Infamous drop makes me a sad panda.
April was a wasteland of nothing.
Time will tell if sales improve with Watch Doge and Wolfenstein coming.

I'm not too shocked. After the initial buzz was over, people probably feel the sentiment that this is more of an extension of last gen. The games are the same, and you can play them on your last-gen systems. Nothing feels "next-gen" and when you have big budget games failing to hit 1080p/60fps (which is setting the bar low considering the 4K thing on the horizon), it's really underwhelming.

Interestingly, if software sales data was counted on a by-SKU basis -- meaning that game sales were tabulated per-console instead of combined, Yoshi's New Island (3DS), Infamous: Second Son (PS4), MLB 14: The Show (PS3), Kinect Sports Rival (Xbox One), and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (Xbox One) all would have charted.

So...did Yoshi's Island outsell Infamous if it's ordered by sales?

If so, the sales of Sticker Star and Yoshi are sending the wrong impressions...

Ridiculous prediction anyway.

MS will make sure XB1 is at the least on par with PS4 in the US and UK. Japan will be minimal for PS4 this gen, so PS4's lead will basically be what it sells in Europe minus whatever XB1 sells there.

Certainly not going to be an 80m gap, I don't know how anyone can say that with a straight face.

Yea but that's not good enough.

The 360 murdered the ps3 in the us and they both sold about the same worldwide.

The problem is the Wii really colored last gen. Most 3rd parties didn't bring their games to the Wii and did just fine, and towards the latter half of the gen the Wii software sales shrank a lot. The best selling games were mostly Nintendo games.

Last generation was not very good for third party publishers, just to make that clear. The best you might say is "treading water."

What I am trying to say is if PS4 and Xbone can continue to track ahead of their predecessors than I think most publishers would view that as a big win.

Yes, I definitely agree with that, and also agree it's possible it might happen. We'll see.

So what if they did? As far as I can see, TF is the top selling title across all formats. The X1 version also has a good attach rate amongst that consoles owners, so it being outsold by Infamous is more likely to be down to the X1 being outsold by the PS4.

well tf certainly wasnt the second coming of the jesus for the x1, as was advertised.

the real jesus is shh at people who made those claims

eh well neither one has great results so nothing too scandalous. I think march gave us enough fodder. Think the June thread will be the telling one . (Post e3 xbox 399 etc)

by year 5 or 6, the average craptablet will be packing a similar punch to the PS4.

these consoles are on a clock like never before.

Why are they tied to the PC graphics tech clock, though? Most of the market isn't interested in that relationship even if some hardcore folks are. Last I checked, consoles can still sell software despite being way behind the bleeding edge...an advantage to both the gamemaker and gameplayer who isn't caught up on that, especially something to consider when smaller developers will make the majority of games on these new consoles. Their requirements will most likely be more than met while their capability to max out and demand more of the host hardware will always be limited by choice or by lack of funding/time/manpower.

I understand this, I'm just saying you can't just discount it as if it doesn't matter. The whole reason contraction is occurring is because all those (much more profitable) consumers who bought Wii's last generation aren't buying any consoles today, and that fact is invisible on your chart. There were a lot of those consumers, and those consumers were highly profitable, and they've been scooped up by competitors like Apple and Google and lost by the console manufacturers.

In other words, we aren't just losing a random sampling of consumers from the console market, we're losing the most profitable ones first, with the remaining "core" gamers typically offering far lower margins. That's a problem.

And one that isn't hopefully completely damning. But very well could be. How far down the rabbit hole does it go? Are all late casual adopters finding their fix elsewhere? If so the damage could hit both MS and Sony too. The large bulk of sales for both came long after the enthusiast "core" market had bought in on the 360 and PS3.

I'll take Sticker Star and Yoshi's New Island over nothing.

In a thread filled with mods, probably wasn't the smartest thing to say.

That's not what my argument is about though is it? It's good enough to ensure PS4 won't have an 80m lead like that guy suggested. Won't be anywhere near that.

Bruce kind of coughed up the future a day or so ago. Sony winning isn't going to bring drama. XO over 100,000 isn't going to bring drama. Maybe next month with the news of the XO price drop? Stay tuned!

Smart phones are close to a mature market, but the rule of three does NOT mean equal market share. Normally 3 is under 10% market share, and windows fits that bill (and it is growing even though it is barely noticeable).

Again, how many of those consoles were severly supply constrained due to manufacturing issues during their first few months?

PS4 isn't really supply constrained anymore, if that's what you're getting at. If anything I'd say the fact that PS4 had a higher launch supply than any of those three is the contributor to the slowdown now- everyone who wanted one ASAP already has one, so what's left are the people waiting for more games (or a particular game) to come out and justify the purchase of a PS4/XBone.

This is the single best post I have ever seen on gaf.

Picking a fight with mods? Opiate needs a grammar checker. I know some people live and die by his posts, but there are some serious errors.

Has Sony released their numbers yet? I'm starting to think theirs isn't much higher than Xbox One's. ...Which makes me concerned.

Theres an imminent push for 4K displays.

If titles are struggling to achieve 1080p 30fps, there is going to be demand for hardware that can display a 4k image natively.
EDIT:
Also if your phone using HDMI out is more impressive graphically than your console is, you're not buying your games on your console.
