SPOILER: Columbus finds America
wtf wtf wtf they switches from Wacom to n-trig. Ugh I beg Wacom was charging for way too much money to license the tech. This was almost the perfect art tablet. Fu ms, fu Wacom.

Yep, look at the market share of the Surface compared to other products on its category, who cares it is from Microsoft, they just want to be number 1.
Market share is only a useful indicator in markets with commodities (e.g. toothpaste or paper goods). It was a mistake for B-schools to try to transfer that to the tech industry considering the distinct differentiation that exists in product categories. It's not an "either or" proposition with hardware as it is with Colgate and Crest.

In the hardware space, you have two paths:
1. The high margin game.
2. The low margin scale game.

The low margin scale game in the PC space turns out not to be a great place to be in, and it's in fact the very reason that Microsoft jumped into the hardware space.

They didn't do this to be a loss leader. They did this to define a vertically integrated experience that ties software, services and hardware together. They can't beat Google at the free services game, and they can't be just a sole OS player anymore.

Aw, crud.
Was looking to get someone an art tablet and was waiting for the SP3 announcement.

Guess I can wait to see if the Pro 2 goes down in price? (yeah right)

What are the art implications for this?

I didn't even hear this in the demo?

Ugh I need a mini pro to replace my venue 8 pro. An even larger screen than the surface pro 2 makes it useless to me.

Meh, I have a Surface with a Wacom digitizer and my girlfriend has a Vaio Duo 13 with an N-Trig digitizer. There really isn't much difference between the two, especially not now that Photoshop is working with N-trig. In fact in some ways, N-Trig is much better like for example that it actually works close to the edges which is really important on smaller screens such as the Surface's.

So how long do these specs hold out? Is Pro 1 still viable for example?

This things are laptops and not tablets so I'd expect a good 5 year lifespan with moderate to heavy usage.

He did eventually.

Didn't he go back and add it with the typepad?

Pretty sure he put the type cover on later and put it back on the scale, and the scale didn't budge.

He added the typepad afterwards.

Why? The type cover is an add on to the tablet. You can type on it without one.

pretty sure he did.

Sorry! I was following the Ars liveblog and I didn't notice that update.

Pro 1 is still great except the battery life

And im excited to play with the new digitizer... the wacom one was so fucked and it could never be calibrated perfectly. Drove me up the wall.

Just for fun:

MBA 13" 1.7 GHz dual core i7 8 GB RAM 256 GB SSD = $1449

SP3 i7 8GB RAM 256 GB SSD + SP Type Cover $1549+$130 = $1679

(I realize there are other differences.)

Apple charges $300 tax for the 512 SSD upgrade
MS is charging a $400 tax for the 512 SSD upgrade
