It seems like the game will use whatever amount of ram you have as people with 6GB titans are saying it maxes their memory out. The problem seems to be that the memory management fails, especially while driving quickly. I'd wait for the official driver updates from AMD and Nvidia before getting overly concerned though. The people playing this have beat street date by quite a bit and I'd imagine driver updates will be rolling out by or on launch day. This is a game Nvidia is pushing exclusive features on after all. I can't imagine they will let their cards flounder this hard after release.

I sure do hope so as it seems baffling.

I'd say even if DX10 was supported, the 260 would struggle with performance and you'd have a bad experience. Think of it as a blessing! (And a prompt to upgrade... if you want to run big-budget games on your PC throughout this gen, that card isn't going to be good enough).

I know i've had it for years, but i can play all the latest games I've tried at low, i can even run battlefield 4 with some settings on high above 30fps

It takes up almost all my VRAM on my 4GB 670s...what?=O

Man, my 2GB 670 am cry. High textures, here we come!

If resolution and anti aliasing is tied to VRAM, why than does increasing either of those still decrease framerate if you have plenty of room to spare?

There doesn't appear to be any room to spare. Everyone checking their vram of any size is seeing the game constantly using 90%+ of it at all times. We had someone in this thread saying they had to use high textures on a 6GB titan.

Sorry, I'm speaking more in general. If i'm playing Crysis 3 and it's telling me i'm using 2gigs of VRAM, and I decide to increase anti aliasing. It will still drop my framerate even though it's below the 4 gigs on my card.

Increasing resolution and using better AA will not only use more VRAM, but rendering more pixels takes longer and therefore the FPS goes down.

Pretty much all aspects of graphical assets are tied to VRAM and performance, it's just that some use up more than others (textures primarily fill up VRAM with minimal processing impact on most of today's GPUs as texel fillrate isn't a problem much anymore; on the other hand, high accuracy physics simulations can suck up a lot of performance but don't need quite as much space to store data). Resolution and anti aliasing samples, however, both consume a decent amount of VRAM to store pixel-related information, but also produce a high impact on processing speed. Just because a card can store the data doesn't mean it doesn't have to process it and vice-versa (though less common, usually cards are well-matched with adequate VRAM amounts for current games and the GPU's ability, if not more than necessary for marketing reasons on lower-end cards and sometimes a bit less due to cheapness or sudden shifts in development practices).

VRAM is just a buffer where data is stored, a GPU still needs to process it and this is the case for all data with only varying ratios of impact on either/or depending on the specific type of data.

Oh, that's because raising your resolution or AA causes your video card to work harder. MSAA can especially be a hog with newer games since it's far less efficient then it was with older games. These things are not free. Usually vram is only an issue for those trying to run really high resolutions like 1440p or 4k. Vram is only being discussed here so much because whatever memory management taking place is failing in watch dogs. It's unclear yet if it's an issue with the video card driver or an issue with watch dogs itself.

Honestly with the little difference there is between high and ultra you'll be fine. I thought my 670's were done for reading that we needed 3gb for ultra textures but high texture settings is acceptable.
I ain't upgrading till we get those sweet new Nvidia cards +DX12. Besides only worthwhile upgrade would be 780ti and that stuff is still too expensive here.

Appreciate an answer to anyone who already has the game, curios is all...

Does that "Wide Screen Letterbox" option let you play in 21:9 aspect ratio? Like for example, if my display was 1920x1080, would it render the game at 1920x800?

Anything to save extra performance with minimal sacrifice to image quality i will do lol

After reading through this thread, we are concerned considering that the street date for this game is in two days in the US, three days elsewhere (and tomorrow night for Origin). I'm not going to single anyone out at this point, but the sheer volume of people who claim to have purchased the physical version of the PC release early is suspicious enough that I am going to ask everyone who has posted their own screenshots and performance impressions to please post photographic evidence of ownership of the game.

Please do not continue to post impressions in this thread before doing so.

Release date for this game on Origin is 9PM tomorrow (Mon) night, so it's not unrealistic that people would have the game early.

Haha this'll be interesting.

Members verifying their physical pre-launch purchases should probably be a standard practice, tbh.

but then again, we wouldn't have these

moments. i'm torn.

this should be standard practice for all PC games at this point. Shit is infuriating when we so many of use preorder legitimately on Origin/Steam/Uplay and are stuck waiting for a preload... yet every one and their mother is "getting the game early".

Origin release Monday night? AWESOME, I don't need to suffer (as much) through work on tuesday. That plus the origin-India treatise is mucho good

Except on ebay buying a "physical" pre-launch copy just means they email you a uplay key. I take it evidence would have to be showing watch dogs in your digital origin/steam/uplay library.

Nevermind, this thread feels like a bait.
For everyone that has the game, which settings are the most taxing, performance wise?

I will accept a photo of a disc, or a screenshot of its presence in your digital library provided that the game is playable at this point from there.

What? Come on, this was an outlier. Most physical games are tied to to keys that still prohibit whoever bought a physical copy to playing whenever the game formally unlocks through whatever online client it's tied to.

Still, it's weird that it took mods so long to respond. It was plain as day what was happening here.

No you don't understand. The issue is with people posting about playing a game before it's out. If you own the game on Origin/Steam/uPlay/whatever you wouldn't be able to play it before it's released unless you're a reviewer.

Yeah, it says in the Origin game details: Available May 26, 9:00PM. Hopefully that means the game will unlock and not just pre-load.

If it's like other Ubisoft games, even if you buy through Origin or Steam, everything still runs through uplay. It's a pretty sure bet that no one will be playing until launch.

Unless you are press, you can't really play Watch Dogs before the release date (On PC that is)

Uplay won't unlock it before.
Are you saying that it is not the case that people can play physical copies early as was claimed earlier in the thread?

I'm guessing you're PST? Because 9PM there would be 12:00 Midnight on May 27th EST.

That's the impression I was under, but it doesn't make much sense thinking about it. Everything runs through uplay since that is Ubisoft's DRM.

No, I'm in the Boston area. I assume it's because I bought it through Origin India using Hola that it's showing 9PM release time Mon night. Either that or something's wrong.
