Yet another rant about shitty PSN speeds and Sony incompetence

I work in IT, and when someone has an issue the first thing you do is check to make sure it isn't user error or that person's individual equipment. You don't immediately paint the entire infrastructure as shit.

My comment wasn't aimed at the idea that some people are having issues, it was directed at the fanboyish generalization that was being made.
Anyway what should Sony investigate exactly? Why this person is having speed issues connecting to their network from a region that the console hasn't even been released in yet?
And somehow trying to relate this to the Microsoft DRM? What?

Great response was about to come in and post something similar but you saved me the troubles.

I increased my download speed by changing my DNS servers to point to googles. Give that a shot you should see an increase in download/uploads mbs.

My internet is terrible by comparison (thanks Australia)

That said, psn has been very fast for me on ps4... Much faster than when I was downloading games, patches etc on 360. I don't have an Xbone to compare, but I imagine it's much the same.
For me in Aus it goes Origin-X1-Steam-Ps4-Vita-Wiii-3DS.

You clearly didn't read. I said I already changed DNS and even tunneled my connection through private VPN.

Anyway I am fucking around trying to find fastest servers and manually write them down in DNSMasq.

Can't say I feel you OP, my connection maxes out at around 100mbps on my PS4 so I kinda feel sorry for you. Actually no, I don't care.

Your first mistake, expecting PS4 wireless to give you decent speeds.

Go wired. Sony cheaped out on the wireless card. Give me around 2mbps through wireless (even with nearly 100% signal strength), whereas wired (through a switch, some 50 feet of ethernet cord etc) gives me 50+mbps.
I actually wanted to make a thread about this when the consoles came out, but couldn't because I was a junior, anyway, I'm from Australia, and I have both of my consoles connected via Ethernet, XB1 pulls down around 113Mb/s, where as the PS4 can barely manage half that at around 55Mb/s which is similar to your example. So while connecting via a cable improves it, it still has a long way to catch up to XBL speeds, at least in Australia.

Changing your DNS servers isn't going to make a huge difference... hardly at all, in fact. It might change how fast you can resolve www.sony.com to an IP address, but little else.

It's more about your ISP, sometimes your equipment (not using gigabit ethernet, shitty router, etc), or just your location. Your packets might require more or fewer hops (run a TRACERT command to sony servers and see) and that right there is what will determine your general speed over the long haul.

It's okay for me on PS4. PSV on the other hand is an atrocity, a crime against humanity. And it's so dumb, because apparently it's a mobile console, made for downloads.

Downloading takes ages, managing your library is shit, because if you want to re-download something, you have to go through the store and scroll through some obscure menu that lists everything you have ever bought on the PSN on any platform ever. And, of course, you have to do this ALL THE TIME because cards only support up to 32GB. God, fuck the Vita for this.

Fix this Sony! This shit is infuriating. I want Steam like acces to all my games on my Vita. Downloaded or not. It makes sense, Sony. It really does.

You can use content manager from your PC or store extra Vita content on your PS3/4 if you have more shit than your card can handle at once. You have that alternative to redownloading from PSN every time.

PSN seems to be reading my connection just fine.

Your intentions to use PSN are fine, just use a PSN service closer to you like Taiwan or Singapore.

You are going from China to LA to route traffic, and you're going to have a bad time.

yep, as much as i know, PS4 PSN uses Akamai for content distribution, which is the most expensive CDN out there... ps3 uses S3.

I always got full speeds myself.

PSN speeds seem horribly slow for me recently, and that's with a wired connection.

No desire to buy digital if it's going to take so long.

I have one Ethernet cord going to my room which I connect to my pc. I really should have got two. I didn't know ps4 wifi was going to be meh.

I don't think I can convince my dad to help me run another wire all the way up to my room haha

You don't need two cables, just get a switch.

My actual download speeds appear to be faster than the estimates I get during the Network test. Few multiple GB games I've downloaded in barely any time. As in, far quicker than I would have expected or got with the PS3. But it does seem like the WiFi adaptor in the console leaves something to be desired based at least on some of these tests.

I'm in Los Angeles myself with a 100Mbps connection and my PSN download speed is atrocious. I get approximately 20Mbps if I'm lucky. And yes I am hardwired with Gigabit on my home network. NAT Type 2 hooked up to a Netgear switch and then to my 2013 Apple AirPort Extreme and then to my modem which is in bridge mode. I can't believe we pay 50 per year and the service is so slow.
You don't pay 60 per year. ;-)
Sorry, got my consoles mixed up for a moment.

And yeah when I downloaded Wolfenstein and Watch Dogs they both took an eternity. I get full 100 Mbps when downloading from other sources on my computer.

I owned a PS3 for most of last generation (I kept it though), when I got a 360 I was amazed by the download speed. PSN was so slow and still is for me. Xbox 360 or XB1 give me crazy fast speeds. Must have to do with the nearest server. I'm in southern california.

I don't know about Xbox One, since I live in a lesser peasant Tier 2 country, but PSN downloads are as awful for me on PS4 as they were on PS3. Me and my friends have tried so much over the years, but nothing seemed to help. The frustrating part is that person we know consistently hovers over a 40Mbps. That's still poor, but it is about the limit of his connection, and we are highly jealous of that since we usually don't even get half of this on our fibre lines.

Either our ISP is doing some serious throttling
(read: trolling)
or PSN really needs to get rid of the weak nodes in its network.

My PS4 reports my connection speed as being much slower than it actually is, but my actual transfer speeds are perfect. I note that the PS4 itself says that the speeds it reports for your connection are rough estimates only.

PSN have always been great at speed for me on both the PS4 and PS3, i don't know whats the problem but it might have to do with you being in china.

The only time I get at least 20-30Mbps from PS4 is when I route it through PC using private VPN

Any way that your ISP is throttling your connection? From my experience, PSN is fairly damn accurate when it comes to DL/UL speeds.

How is it incompetence on Sony's part if they haven't even launched their consoles there?

This

More anecdotal evidence, practically the only time my home Internet connection is maxed is when I'm downloading on PSN. I actually get better speeds than steam through my PS3. So far I think only Origin has topped it.

I know ranted about this a lot in other threads which was offtopic but I just can't take Sony BS anymore, I tried everything and still PSN works like shit for me. I don't know what to do. I live in China, so I have to resort to buying overpriced imports, waiting for oversea shipments or buying digital. I have both PS4 and Xbox One, as well as PS3/360/Vita. Not a single service including Uplay, Steam or Origin give me as much trouble as PSN. I really want to buy games on PSN despite shitty EU prices, but speeds just don't allow me when it takes 3 days to download average (20-25Gb) game. Recently I was buying games exclusively on Xbox One where I get 100-200Mbps speeds and it takes less than an hour to download 40-50Gb, Child of Light, Trials, Wolfenstein and Watch_Dogs just recent ones.

The only time I get at least 20-30Mbps from PS4 is when I route it through PC using private VPN, even then it's picky in terms of servers, my VPN provider has like 7 servers in Los Angeles through which I get 100-300Mbps, only 1 of them gives me 20-30Mbps on PSN while 200-400Mbps to other services like XBL or Steam, rest give me 3-4Mbps as my main connection (only PSN). How can Sony charge for their shitty service with such shitty CDN which is so picky on routing even to major exchange points and data centers? Watch Dogs was the last straw for me, wanted to download it on PS4, saw 47 hours remaining timer and just said screw it and bought digital version on Xbox One, took me less than 20 minutes to download there. I don't even want to talk about random bullshit maintenance that just D/C you from games, happened at least 5 times to me since launch in Nov where toast pop about PSN downtime and kicks me out of the game for 3-4 hours or more.

Xbox One and PC are both using Wi-Fi AC. I know 2.4Ghz is shitty, but it's not that shitty. Just switching my Wi-Fi adapter on PC to 2.4Ghz mode I still get 70-80Mbps. I actually said fuck it and bought 10m Ethernet cable just for the sake of testing PS4 on wired connection - there is zero difference, so if you going to say "Le Lol, Wi-Fi" or "Lol, shitty chinese internet" just don't bother, since I have decent connection and as I said switching to wire didn't change speeds at all.

Just a few pics so people won't call me a liar:

Xbox One

PS4

My internet speeds to different locations:

All test performed today (except Xbox One, but I think that is not necessary). Realistically is there a way to pressure Sony to fix this? I know, majority probably don't have as much problems, but it still sucks especially when you know for sure that it's Sony a fault here. They became really unresponsive to any criticism or suggestions after PS4 destroyed Xbox One in sales. It took them 6 months to allow us to dim lights on DS4, even though people were asking to allow them to turn it off completely.

On the separate note - didn't Sony learn anything? Why they cheapened out on 5Ghz? They are pushing 4K and all other BS like 1080p 3D streaming which requires bandwidth that 2.4Ghz can't provide. Even Wi-Fi AC in couple of years will become a bottleneck.

/rant
Sony should fix this shit.

Can you move from China?

Your ISP is throttling lol.....so much for those tested speeds. I get roughly 50mbps on the test which is what I pay for and my downloads usually end up hitting about 60 to even 70 when actually downloading.

Wouldn't it be pretty difficult for Sony to 'fix' this since the performance varies so much from person to person and location to location?

In Southern California here with 18mbps/1.5mbps and on wireless because I kinda have to. x_x

PS3 - 11.4mbps / 1.5mbps
PS4 - 11.1mbps / 1.5mbps (not sure why this number is slightly lower...)

You're in China, dude.
It ain't even released officially there, so I doubt there's going to be any servers in your region. Plus, don't Chinese ISP's block effectively everything ever?
I mean, we all know the wireless in the console is a bit choppy, but I dunno man.

Ain't worth moaning like this about either way you slice it.

Wrong. Your DNS will determine which CDN server you connect to. If for example you're in Europe and use a US-based DNS service you will connect to a CDN server in the US, which is clearly not ideal. For things like this you are usually better off using DNS servers provided by your ISP.

Thanks, that probably explains mine as I use a US based DNS to access US Netflix.

PSN speeds for PS4 started to suck since last week for me. Before that I could easily get 5MB per sec on my 90mbit connection. But now its only like 1MB per sec while the PS4 network test shows some 70mbit. So at least I know its not my ISP.

Here are my results, and for the sake of science I used the exact same ethernet cable for each device. All devices used the same settings, only difference is the IP address assigned to them.

PS4 PSN speeds are better than they used with to be on the PS3 but they're still far behind the speeds Microsoft offers.

Side note:

PS4 has officially released where I live, where as the Xbox One has yet to be released.

My download speeds: Origin > Xbox > Steam > Playstation

PS4 is still slower than the rest but at least it's not as bad as the PS3 speeds...

The PS4 reads are not correct at times(Download speed reads) But when you download a game, it goes by the actual speed of your connection. No issues with both consoles.

I can't complain about my PSN speeds. I've got a 70mbit connection at home (Belgium) and always seem to download games between 5 and 6MB/s. That's not capping out my connection, but I always have other devices connected 24/7.

I use Ethernet, btw.

I see that the usual suspects have jumped into full defensive mode.

I feel bad for you OP, it was frustrating just to read. I think for many though become "Sony being Sony" and they've just come to expect this. You'd think they'd be able to tap into Gakai's tech or something to help this along.

TBH I would kill for those speeds. Even connecting to Xbox Live I'm lucky to reach 15-20mbps download, and upload? Forget about it. The US is rapidly becoming 3rd world with regards to internet speeds due to the fucking geographic monopolies ISPs have here. And with the Time Warner/Comcast merger I feel it's only going to get worse. We really need a national fibre optic infrastructure built, similar to the interstate highway program a long time ago.

I will say that it's *slightly* possible that due to Net Neutrality being (hopefully temporarily) shoved aside, certain content providers are having to pay US ISPs hefty tolls to maintain bandwidth. I know Netflix recently had to pay a premium to make sure their user experience didnt suffer due to ISPs 'throttling' high bandwidth usage content providers.

So it's possible that if you're connecting to a US server somewhere along the node path to XBL and PSN that is controlled by one of these greedy blood-sucking ISPs, that MS may have paid that premium toll to keep their end-user experience higher while Sony maybe simply can't afford to pay that premium and keep their profit margin intact.

This is purely a theory, but it could explain the difference.

As a side note, if this is in fact the case, it is yet another example of why we need net neutrality.

How is it defensive, if everyone doesn't have the same problem? I've only had problems with the PS3's sluggish Wi-Fi speed, after I got a new modem. It went down to 100-200kbps on my previous 40MB connection, which is why I switched to wired connection. I haven't had any problems since.
