Downloaded AOL 4.0 and found people still using the chatrooms.

I've been having a nostalgia kick lately, and I randomly thought I would try downloading an old ass version of AOL. 4.0 is the one I think I remember the most, because that was when they added fonts and shit to IMs and chatrooms.

Well, my dad still uses AOL for some reason. He has been a member since 1996. I went ahead and created a new screen name under his main account and tried to sign in, because I couldn't remember the password for my old screen name.

I had to run it in Windows 98 compatibility mode to get it to work.

The shit works. Kind of. Some channels actually still work, and buddy lists and IMs still work just like they always did. The biggest revelation for me, though, is chatrooms still exist on this old ass version, and... people still chat in them. I have provided a screen shot as proof. I posted it earlier to the interwebs but thought I could get some really cool nostalgic conversations with gaf.

If anybody has anything they want me to try that they remember, ask away.

I feel like I went back to the 90's and need to tell these lost souls things about the future.

Please, use this thread to reminisce on the days of yesteryear on the internets.

Jesus Christ.

I remember I used to use AOL's Games section and download demos and shareware. Stuff like Hexen and Duke Nukem 3D. The demos were only about 40-50 mbs.

Wow, I can't believe there's still people in those chatrooms.

They're like tribes who haven't yet made contact with modern humanity.

Most of the rooms are empty, but a few still have about 20-30 people chatting away like it's goddamn 1998.

It's so bizarre and eerie.

You're running that thing willingly on an actual PC? And it even seems like a modern one. How does it handle security updates these days? It's like a decade and a half already.

I imagine Elvis sightings is just as busy as it ever was.

I guess I was an internets hipster back in the 90's because I never used AOL. If they had any vision they could have been Google or Facebook.

Those are echoes from past conversations. Just like the stars at night, just a leftover of something that lived long ago.

Maybe it is 1998. It's like when you turn on an old radio and you hearing a live broadcast from the 30's or 40's or something.

Technically all of AOL chat rooms and messaging is on AIM servers, so its not that surprising

You can join those same rooms on AIM.

I think there used to be exclusive AOL rooms but they broke that barrier down with the uptick of AIM as a standalone client.

Reminds me of whenever I used to go onto The Ziggurat, a chatroom hidden deep within the labrynthine layout of Radiohead's old website (hidden within a word maze, a page found within hundreds of others). And people were still there, talking on it.

I think it's gone now, but it was one of the eeriest places I have ever been on the internet. And Radiohead themselves were in it quite often, not that anyone knew at the time.

....someone must know what I'm on about.

A stranger on the internet wouldn't rape you...would he?

Hold on, let me just scan an old Sears photo to email you. This will just take about 20 minutes.

I remember meeting a great online friend on the Ares Downloader. My computer was full of virus that time and the only thing that worked online was the Ares Browser and Ares chatroom. Which surprising was packed full of people.
