NPD Sales Results for May 2014 [Up1: Wii U Hardware]

Anyone who wanted MK8 already bought a Wii U (also to play other great nintendo games) so no surprise there if it really is just 63k~. It's just too late for the console to pick up steam.

It's not a great number, but it's not really telling of anything except that no one bought Wii U's the rest of the month.

It's slightly encouraging for Nintendo that they may finally get the message that big releases lead to upticks in numbers.

Not sure how Xbone in June will win.

I mean, E3 was nothing ground breaking.

And with the PS4, you got the Destiny Alpha and the Battlefield Hardline Beta.

I would have bought a PS4 that night just to play the alpha (if I was waiting till the end of the year to buy one).

Wow at Mario Kart. It did amazingly well. Now I'm really curious about those Wii U numbers. (Edit: well now I know).

Btw, Xbone has some serious trouble. All multiplats sold better on the PS4.

Even Ghosts.

So I'm not the only one surprised at CoD better on PS4 despite MS' marketing deal. It's a pretty crazy turn-around considering that CoD on 360 used to outsell the PS3 version >2:1.

Any idea when we will get MS PR?

I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't any.

Ghosts selling more on PS3 than Xbox One is significant, right?

Probably just means that the last gen consoles had better legs. It can only sell so much and with X1 sales basically collapsing, there's probably not enough new X1 owners to keep buying the game (basically, every X1 owner that wanted it probably already bought it)

Mario Kart sold great, but it looks like mainly from people who already own a Wii U. I really thought it would get a decent bump this month but ~64k is not good at all...

People keep saying this (hw not good) but pre-MK numbers are what they are and a bump is only going to bump so much. If people were expecting say 150k on the back of MK8 that would be almost a 200% increase MoM or almost 400% increase YoY. It's completely unrealistic even with the system's tiny sales.

Also remember that the game was only out for two days and likewise the bundle.

The bump was good for Wii u no way around it, and June should be even bigger. The only question is how much will the drop in July be.

Pretty much my point. 30k sold in a couple of days is not bad at all. Even by a drop of 50% over next month, Wii U sales could reach 150k in June.

Yeah like I said before, no amount of games can change Wii U's fate. It simply isn't a platform most people want, unfortunately.

Most of the sales are probably from the 2 days of MK8 bundle, I say we reserve judgement of its system selling power until the June NPD.

Serious tho, you're completely right. They should at least try to offer something this summer to carry the momentum. At this moment I'd even be okay with a lot of VC releases + a Wii U Selects budget lineup of older games priced lower. That would at least satisfy both new and old wii u owners untill fall is there.

Really weird.

Yea they havent announced anything for Aug at all, WiiU Sports club and Mario Kart 8 is suppose to last from May til Sept, they should have had some HD remakes coming this summer.

There was never a chance of it not being bad. People will never learn that one or two releases never changes anything. As long as 3rd party on the Wii U is dead, so are the sales.
Meh, I don't think 3rd party games will save it either. The console isn't that far off in price from one of the other 2 which provide a better all-round experience for most people interested in games.

The sad reality is that Nintendo games specifically just don't have the pull they used to. They're great and people will buy them if they own the console but a lot aren't willing to buy the console to play them. I was similar with the Wii. I recognized the first party output was fantastic and I was seriously missing out but I still didn't want to invest in another box for them. I did eventually play em but I'm part of the niche "core".

Throw in the wasted year and lack of momentum and questionable advertising and whatever else. This mess was predictable. I'll still enjoy it but this console is fuuuucked.

I surprised that people are surprised that Mario Kart 8 did so well:

1 - Mario Kart is one of the best-selling series of all-time.
2 - Mario Kart 8 got very high review scores (88 average on Metacritic).
3 - They were giving away a free $60 game if you purchased Mario Kart 8 at or near launch.

I'm not much of a Mario Kart fan and was planning on skipping it all together, but as soon as I found out about the free game, my plans changed from "Don't buy" to "Buy on Day 1 no matter what." I daresay Mario Kart 8 has a crazy high attach rate for Wii U owners.

Its not a straight up price cut though, a lot of people probably still want a Kinect. It's still the selling point of the system in mass market ads.

I love Kinect, but you can bet than any fence-sitters waited for the cheaper version to come out. June should be interesting between that and what appears to be happening to the Wii U because of MK8.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Well, yeah, while Wii U numbers are still awful, you have to remember this is just two days of Mario Kart 8 having an actual impact of sales. We'll see MK8 influencing sales in June as well. Probably not as big as many hoped, but it'll still influence sales.
