Destiny: Only one area per planet

2 hours on story missions
1 hour on PvP (4 maps, 2 modes, roughly an hour to experience 2 modes on all maps)
30 minutes at the Strike
30 minutes at the Tower

If I remove all repetition, all grinding and tryout of different classes, there's 4+ hours of content in the beta alone.

Let's quadruple that, and it's 20 hours of non-repetitive content, minimum.

2 hours to keep those story missions? My buddies and I finished those missions in an hour tops.

Trading is limited to characters on the same player account, however. There's no Destiny auction house, and it doesn't look like Bungie will add one to the game any time soon, but trading items between characters on different accounts is "certainly interesting and it's something we'll have to investigate", design lead Lars Bakken told Eurogamer.

Wow. I'm surprised that there aren't more people flipping out about the complete lack of an in-game economy. Maybe an auction house would be too much but damn, at least let me mail an item to a friend. Even Phantasy Star Online let me give a cool drop to someone that needed it. Can we stop calling this am MMO, please?

Those 6 story missions took you 2 hours?? Wow some people must be really slow. Each of them was 10 minutes at max. Moon took me only 5-6 minutes.

It's absurd the kind of damage control some people are doing here and acting like anybody with an issue with need are crazy or retarded. Bungie said outer areas are exploitable on Old Russia. That was a lie. The game kills you for stepping out of very tight boundaries and the outer area's assets look worse so I doubt the full game will let you.

Those areas are closed off for the alpha and beta but are accessible via geometry/boundary glitching. There are named areas that are fully modeled and populated but can't be explored because there are invisible walls blocking you from entering them. I imagine those areas will be available when the game actually comes out. Sure, on one hand we have people doing crazy damage control but on the other hand there are people who are convinced that the alpha and beta are representative of final content in terms of quality and quantity. Both sides would save themselves effort and embarrassment by just waiting for the game to launch.

I will still get the game as I think it is worth the price. 4 worlds is worth 60 dollars.

However, a big however, this is all rather disappointing. If the expansions aren't huge and I start to feel nickled or dimed I will have reservations about their future games.

Bungie talked about Old Chicago and Mumbai Push as one of the first things about revealing the game and now they aren't in the game? How is it crazy to be upset about these lies?

Wait, wait, wait. OK! I have been reading this thread, but am very confused (lack of sleep). Please tell me where this was confirmed? If this post is based on DeeJ's comment during the stream, then I am waiting for confirmation from Bungie.

I mixed those story mission times with Explore times, because how long it takes for someone to explore stuff differs from individual to individual.

Expected.
I bet a lot of people complaining about content are the same people who put 20+ hours in the beta.
Sounds like this will be worth he 60 bucks.
Who put in that many hours between 3 classes and Crucible, its not as linear as you make it seem. I have no drive to play the beta, personally. I'm pretty bored with OR after the 3 runs I made through it on Alpha, so this is horrible news for me.

No Mans Sky is procedurally generated, no doubt it's impressive but playable space aside it's not even close to destiny level of depth.

All that said, Destiny should be bigger than 9? locations. It's effectively borderlands with ship travel between locations.

No it's not. It really isn't Borderlands. Other than blending FPS and RPG elements and numbers coming out of enemies, the two are not similar at all. People keep trying to atomize what Destiny is, and there is contention because it really isn't like anything before it. There are obviously similar elements to things that have come before it, but the synthesis of elements is what makes classifying Destiny so difficult.

So, only praise a game/company, until the game is released, is what you're advocating?

- "DESTINY'S BETA IS REALLY AWESOME! THIS GAME IS GONNA BE SPECTACULAR!"

-"FUCK YEAH YOU'RE RIGHT!"

...

- "I don't know guys.. mission are a simple horde-type thing, loot is lacking, maps are not that big and I'm worried that in the final release we'll get only 4 planets. I'm kinda worried for the amount content of the release."

- "well, you retard, it's a beta, what do you expect"

Just once id like a gameplay demo that isnt a bunch of BS and is representative of what im gonna play.

I think it is a situation, especially in a game with giant ambitions, where the game DESIGNERS are telling their programmers and others their vision. What they want. Give me this vision, give it to me!

So the right hand creates that vision, in a limited form, for the initial reveals and demonstrations. But, as time goes along, the right hand begins mentioning to the left .. aka the programmers begin telling the designers that X is simply not possible, or Y will need 8 months to implement properly and the deadline would have to be pushed.

Yadda yadda. The ambition then has to be gradually scaled back to be able to ship the product in time.

Demo 1 - wouldn't it be cool if you could call down your friends and see them enter into the game via a ship? Yup, do that. Ok, they get it done for a single demonstration. Get it to work under perfect conditions during a very scripted event. Then the scale that sort of thing into larger tests in-house and find all sorts of lag issues. Dude being dropped off with no ship in sky. Or ship passing overhead and 10 seconds later the dude loading into the game. The " beam me up " animation not synching with the player entering the game. The actual missions not beginning until you cross through the public areas already filled with people, so how do you get someone dropped into the game like this when the server is maxxed for that area already? Then friends begin dropping into the wrong server.

List goes on with the potential issues with just dropping people from the sky into your game, when the game is always online.

That example could be applied to most early demostrations that end up being pretty different in the end.

Old Russia really isn't that Bog. There's a lot of dead space to just give you a reason to use your sparrow. There are about 8 points of interest and some random small structures around the place. It's really small if it's supposed represent even half of Earth.

Took 2 friends and I an hour and a half to complete Moon.

took us 2 hours and change to go everywhere-kill everything once and then do the story mission. but I like to enjoy my time when playing games.

You did an awful lot of exploring. I did the mission. My explore playthrough of the moon mission took about 4 hours though. Remember, I played the mission first, and explored later.

Bungie during the 2013 gdc, had a panel where they talked about their process in figuring out what Destiny should be. Places like Flooded Chicago and Mumbai Push were mentioned there, but never confirmed at actual places in the game.

Didn't Bungie say that the beta only represents 10% of the full game?

If a planet, and a moon is 10 percent...that doesn't really sound that bad.

There is no need to stick to strict definitions of things.

Its like arguing whether Borderlands is an RPG or a FPS. Its possible to take both genres and pluck many of their ingredients to blend in to your own unique recipe for a game.

Not when you're criticizing its content it isn't. If one is going to set a benchmark, at least state the benchmark.. For me, I think it compares favorably in content against both pay to at MMOs and non-MMO regular games.

I think Bungie has said there is no trading because they want you to earn your own equipment. Not have your friend give you cool stuff right at the start.

I'm not going off a cliff, but TBH I was already bored with Old Russia waaaay before the beta ended.

I may be alone here, but OR seemed so empty in terms of things to discover and loot chests and the like. That to me was way more worrisome than planet totals.

It's an MMO even if it's MMO fps. Anyone want to bet how many areas they're adding via expansion DLC? Borderlands 2 managed to add great stuff like sand sea area, so I'm not about to get rage mode on yet.

It's an MMO with a player cap of 12?

This is a PSO-styled FPS with a larger player count and PSO was never an MMO.

I remember one video where a Bungie dev was saying something to the effect of 'how do we keep the player engaged for 20-30 hours?'

Sorry can't recall who/where, but I think the video is on a pre-order website.

I hoped he hadn't meant that this was the scale of unique content, but it appears to be. I always explore and take my time, so I know I will probably double that, but it is still a disappointment in terms of Earth only being Russia. It just doesn't have enough content, in my opinion.

I guess we will learn more later.

When Destiny was first being revealed in early 2013, they first just showed off concept art only. They talked about how the concept art for Old Chicago and Mumbai Push were two areas on Earth. This was some of the first details about Destiny revealed by Bungie. And now they are quietly confirming on a tiny live stream that they aren't in the game.

Yeah, this really disappointed me. They made it sound like the areas would be massive, open and fully explorable. Instead, you only get to explore a tiny fraction of what you can see. Old Russia gives off the illusion of a vast expanse ready to explore, but the moment you actually try you're greeted by invisible walls and death triggers. Really bugged me how artificially restricted your movement is.

Yup :(

I'm not surprised this is 1000 posts already. I don't know hy some are jumping overboard when we don't know how the final game will be and how much story there is. Do we know all the planets and missions?

Being sold on a 'vision' is the worst mistake possible.

Gameplay + confirmation of approximate content. Affirm those two things, then decide whether or not that sells you. Not a bunch of concept art and devs using bombastic language like 'explore da universe' , 'become legend!.'

Can you explain what went down in Two Words' post then? I'll quote it just in case you missed it:

Destiny Lies:

- "You'll be able to explore all of that area over there!"
Nope. Extremely tight restrictions of exploration. Game kills you if you walk out of the intended zone.

- Friends enter your game world visibly from their ship.
Nope. They just pop in suddenly out of nowhere.

- Old Chicago and Mumbai Push are parts of Earth.
Nope. Better hope its in the DLC.

- "Each planet's campaign will be as long and large as Halo Reach."
Nope. Definitely not the case with Earth. Even with areas like King's Watch being included, it seems smaller than Reach. And 10-15 hours in Old Russia is going to get dull if that is the case.

- Public Event brings in a ton of other players to fight the boss.
Nope. No extra summons. Better hope the people around you actually want to do the public event.

- "You'll be able to create the character how you want them to look in all sorts of ways.".
Nope. Every race/gender has like 6-8 face options.

- Showed gameplay inferring you can deploy your ghost as an assistant.
Nope. He is just an omnikey.
