Indie Games 2014 [August] Now Voting - Post 353!

Bought and played The Escapists that was released today. Looks like it could be a fun and deep RPG style prison escape simulator from the hour or two I played. Must say it was pretty jarring at first though, the game literally starts and just throws you in with no knowledge of how anything works, and when it's a game that's running on a pretty quick schedule (you have to be in certain places at certain times as it's prison) it's pretty overwhelming. Would benefit from a slower introduction to teach you a couple of the games' mechanics. Maybe even a small tutorial.

I did start to pick it up though but there's still so much to learn it seems. I quite like that I have to figure out stuff on my own but when the text is moving at a pace I can't even keep up with, it was a little confusing. Maybe I'm just a slow reader but I had very little time to take anything in and get adjusted.

With that small gripe it looks like there's a lot to do and I'm looking forward to getting into it and playing more.

Add another game to Adult Swim Games' lineup, they're publishing Zenzizenzic

Checked out the latest version of Invisible Inc. Every time I play the game, it feels like it's come a long way since the last update. The game feels more complete and more polished than ever before. The new menu designs and presentation are wonderful. Gameplay is deeper and more complex than before. Invisible Inc. definitely doesn't feel like a tech demo anymore

what's the difference between the free and paid version of tales of maj'eyal?
the one in steam isn't free so i'm assuming that's the paid version?

For what its worth, I really like the online touches the full version adds to the game. The free version is more than enough to check whether you like the game though :)

Behemoth put a teaser trailer for their new game.

From the Youtube description:
Shortly before the release of BattleBlock Theater we started working on something new. We schemed up a bunch of concepts and picked our strongest one. From there we fleshed out the lone survivor prototype!!! As it grew stronger and stronger, we polished it, furnished it with delights, and added (gluten free?) sprinkles. Yes, as the chicken dictates, this game is of a genre we haven’t covered before and seek to breathe a new flavor into. Maybe you can find a hint in the video about which genre it is??

Yeah, that was a great Cosmochoria update. As someone who's in it for the WiiU version, I also appreciated the fact that Nate touched on the Gamepad implementation.

So anyone who has played it think Hand of Fate is worth $15 from the latest Humble Bundle? I know the discussions on it seemed to be tepid due to RNG issues but I am curious if the devs have been sorting that out. I am going to do some research myself but thoughts from people actually playing the game would be swell.

Avenging Angel - 2015, free pre-alpha demo (PC)
637x358.resizedimage

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=298970911

Avenging Angel is at its core an "interactive story" set in an imaginary world, but the exploration, experiencing, and participating happens through time tested and familiar FPS dynamics.
The story takes place on Planet Earth, in a steampunk setting, roughly 10000 years from our current day and age, where 21st Century has not only passed from history to legend, but also from legend into myth. The game is based on Henri Brandt's "The Land of Strange Gods" -universe.

Lol
What, most people don't change their avatar every few months?

Not if you want to be remembered lol I change mine more than I should and it hurts my visibility for sure.

Your avatar is more visible than your nickname and some posters are easier remembered by the avatar at the first glance. Not sure how its with my SpaceChem avatar, the others would need to answer that if its prominent enough to go "ah, yeah. Toma", but JaseC for example always sports a Saoirse avatar, which makes me always associate these avatars with him, even from other users.

wok has his cat, panda has his comic avatars and you have... something new every few hours :p

I tend to change it depending the game I'm enjoying at the moment or anticipating the most. Never really paid much attention to what others thought about my avatar

A 2-4 player local multiplayer cube fighting title. Use finely tuned and balanced weapons in the ultra-competitive mode, or duke it out on party-centric EXPLOSIONS mode with powerups, custom maps, and a variety of game types!
Neat to see this here! I'm in a club with the creator and we got to play. It's a fun little game and the motion and controls feel pretty smooth.

Anyways, I always lurk and mark games I wanna play and love reading y'alls impressions but I really need to find the time (and money!) to go through all these games.

I have tried this a couple times and the controls just seem to suck too bad for me to stick with it. Or maybe I am just bad. Or both.

I havent tried the game in quite a while, but it really is a game that deserves quality time with it. If necessary, lock yourself up in a room and force yourself to learn the controls within 3-4 hours of playtime or something.

And I am a bit surprised to see how many of the games from last year actually did get released by now. Would have expected a higher dropout rate.

The controls are weird, take some getting used to. But it's so worth it. You're missing out on an incredible experience

Edit: also I believe you can change the controls. Not sure what the original scheme was, but I have it as X to jump, Square to attack, R1 to grab, etc.

Gloomwood - ????
tumblr_na234e4dXH1tj74sbo3_r1_1280.png

http://jollyrogers99.tumblr.com/

Gloomwood is a first-person adventure game set in a dark, procedural Victorian city. The game has some rogue-like elements (death will reset the city and all its inhabitants), but is altogether more focused on atmospheric/narrative elements than purely goal-based.
The cloaked denizens of Gloomwood wander the streets in various masks. Each type reflects the kind of behavior the denizens exhibits: the constable searches for criminal activity (but can be bribed), the doctor sells various apothecarial solutions, the priest heals those who have done no evil (and sometimes can also be bribed). Some denizens of the same type are non-hostile, others not so much.

The game chronicles the adventures of a mild mannered refrigerator delivery truck driver who travels through a branching maze of parallel universes in order to get a signature on an order slip.
The game is a streamlined, fast paced romp through a mix of dungeons, cave systems, and outdoor areas. One notable feature of the game is that it can be freely toggled between real time and turn based play. The entire game can be played in either mode. The focus is on exploring, treasure hunting, levelling up, and eventually dying a grim and lonely death at the bottom of an uncharted black abyss and being remembered only by the high score table.

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=42918.0

Genesis Noir is set before, during, and after The Big Bang. To save a life you must stop the expansion of the universe.

The core elements are traditional point and click character controls, playful environmental interactions, and event-specific gameplay vignettes.
We’re aiming for a feeling of exploration and discovery rather than intensive puzzle-solving or dialog trees.
