Indie Games 2014 [August] Now Voting - Post 353!

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Sorry for posting here, but that Trading thread is pretty dead

Thanks to that Don't Like Indies? thread, I really want to check out AI War: Fleet Command now.
I have Steam keys for ScreenCheat and MAV, Desura keys for Cahors Sunset and Trace Vecto, and Humble links for AntiChamber, Kami, and Cinders.
Anyone interested in trading if they have a spare AI War?

AI war is such a cool game, the way they approached the game and the game updates made me vow to always, always, always give their games a try down the road. Arcens games are always so interesting.

Been playing the soon to be released Early Access build of Mini Metro and I'm really enjoying it, much like I did the earlier iterations of the game. There's something about the strategically quick-paced gameplay coupled with the resource management aspect that keeps you playing one more game. The addition of the new locations, leaderboards and your high score being saved will make the final release even more "addicting".

Few other likes is the new UI, very slick and definitely the best the game has offered from earlier alphas. Also the night mode is great for late night sessions and is easy on the eyes.

NextGen Pants announced/launched a Kickstarter and Greenlight page for Tetropolis with a modest goal:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/708039348/tetropolis
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=297392957

I'm sure they'll hit their goal just fine, though I'm curious as to whether or not they'll add on to the few stretch goals they have. Either way, I'll just be glad to see the guys involved find some success with this project and as a budding studio after years of listening to the podcasts they've been a part of.

That looks very intriguing, I am sure they'll easily hit their goal too. You should make a formatted post for the demo though, so the demo will be included in the next thread :)

Since someone mentioned Hand of Fate earlier in the thread, I figured I'd give my impressions thus far.

The concept is super cool, the presentation is really slick and the combat works okay enough I guess.

The biggest issue for me at the moment is that your success is far far far too reliant on how you do on the events where you have to choose one of four cards and you get success/failure/huge failure. Basically you can fail to get through solely thanks to a couple of bad draws here and being bad at that one aspect of the game pretty much can doom you.

Worse, there's been some suggestion that it's not solely a skill thing but actually semi-random. No one knows for sure but if it's that true it seems like an awful idea.

I'll play more because I like the concept but that aspect is keeping me from enjoying it too much.

I'm a sucker for games like this. Especially once they showed you could rotate and manipulate the map + physics puzzles...

How's that looking? Still quite interested in it but with its always hard to know how early early access games are you know.
It is still really early but you can see the start of what should be a great tactical, turn-based game. I read their announcement and it sounds like they are making a ton of significant changes/updates at the launch of official Early Access on Steam so I will hop back in and check it out then.

Klei has never let me down though so I am not too worried about them being able to deliver here.

Ugh, that does sound awful. I really love the concept of this game but I am not interested in RNG based failure.

Heyo, you there. Mobile gamer. Sorcery was a great suggestion. I started it up on my train ride today and easily killed 3 hours of time with the first part for the first time through. Probably going to do at least another run, which might end up taking me 1-2 hours to get a better outcome, but its a pretty sweet and engaging game with a surprising amount of choices for the player.

The game has some incredibly obvious drawbacks, like not being designed around true book adventure style difficulty, which means most of the game is laughably easy and always lets you progress one way or the other, and even if you die, you can just retry over and over again, same with some difficult fights that are meant to kill you (you know which one I mean) over and over again. Its not quite "fair" or interesting in the balancing itself, but... and here comes the good stuff:

The amount of choices on the path and in the magic systems is very, very engaging. I was constantly trying to see which spells I could use to suit which situation. Fall into a pit of snakes, how about you levitate out of there? Or you could throw a pebble that you can make explode, or simply cast a giant spell to give you more strength. Or how about that spell to make the snakes friendly. Etcetcetc, not all of those are always at our disposal, and the game has some artificial limiters for its magic system, but its very, very well integrated and incredibly fun to explore the first time around, especially because of the dynamic text descriptions that take many old decisions or your choices into account.

Very fun, unfortunately only on mobile, but HIGHLY recommended on the fun scale, even if the difficulty is a bit lacking. One of those rare games, where I dont actually mind the missing difficulty that much to be honest.

Glad you enjoyed it. The second one is even better, much bigger and has a much more intriguing compelling goal. I like the combat system (the text is procedurally generated btw), and I agree the magic system is great. I thought it was so cool when I decided to put up a forcefield before entering a fight and realized my enemy couldn't damage me.

As for the difficulty, I liked that you weren't constantly dying. IMO, it's about the journey; I liked that that story branches off in some new direction rather than making you lose,

Eitr - ????

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=42569.0

Eitr is an Action RPG which takes inspiration from games such as Dark Souls, Golden Axe and Diablo. The game will be challenging and require timing and precision to progress through the environments. Players will need to use a combination of blocking, combos, buffs and positioning to succeed in battle.

Project SAORR(Super Awesome Off Road Racing) - ????
AHhlse2.jpg

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=41482

This game will be just basic racing game with semi realistic physics. I have no commercial plans for the project yet. It is just practice project/prototype. I really like to make Motorstorm/DIRT style offroad racing game with more realism someday.

Bear Hero - Free early version (PC)
bair10.gif

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=41038.0

Bear Hero is a game about bears jumping over things, lazily pawing enemies to death, and munching on apples. They are also supposed to be exploring a dangerous labyrinth in search of the tree of life, but that is a secondary goal.

Right now the game can be played with the old graphics, but we're working on making new, shiny graphics: http://gamejolt.com/games/adventure/b-air-micro/27478/

Captain Forever Remix - PC, Mac, Linux
ebAlldL.gif

http://captainforeverremix.com/

Captain Forever Remix is a 2D action roguelike where you create a spaceship and blast apart randomly-generated enemies for spare parts.
You better build a pretty tough ship, because you're gonna need it. Your mutant little brother is being a total butthead and must be stopped! He froze the Sun, poked out Jupiter's eye, drank Neptune's oceans, and cracked Earth like an egg! Set off across a messed-up Solar System to put a stop to the big jerkface once & for all!

Hidden Asset - ????
screenshotsaturday20140809_zpsd9944a59.png

http://laserbrainstudios.com/games/

Hidden Asset is Laserbrain Studio’s first commercial game. It takes place in a not-too-distant future devastated by a global economic crisis. In a desperate attempt to counteract this crisis, the world’s governments agreed to grant all large corporations immunity from prosecution. This was meant to free corporations from the oppressions of control and legislation but instead cast the global business world into deadly conflicts. Now, no longer inhibited by law, corporations wage war. And within this new world, a new occupation has seen the light of day: corporate assassin.

You are such an assassin. Working for whoever hires you. Killing whoever they tell you to. You will infiltrate businesses. Shoot up offices. Assassinate CEOs. No mercy. No doubts. It’s all just business.

In The Shadows - ????

In The Shadows is a platformer game with puzzles involving shadow creature, amongst other things, interaction with lights and environment.

Strange, lately I'm not in the mood to play any "new" game so I just stick to games that I already invested some time like RoR or Terraria.

I am currently back on an EU4 trip, we need a break from time to time. Playing and judging new games is more exhausting than taking over europe :p

Now this make me want to go back to play CKII, surviving multiples murder attemps by your uncle and current regent as an young kid is so fun, I don't know how the RNG was so much in my favour.

Idk, probably just need to focus more. Haven't had time to really sit down and play for a good hour or two
I find the game is brutal at times but it's not unfair. There's a room that took me something like 12 attempts to get through but once I figured it out it was quite easy. Good game, I'm really enjoying it.

I played the demo for this but wasn't super keen - I've heard the full release is better though.

How is Sunless Sea?

Really good; really well written, great to look at and super weird. Unfortunately they changed the sound of the boat to this hideously loud metallic chugging noise which completely drowns out all the ambiance in the world - I can't play it until that's fixed :(

Painted Heart - So far a big surprise this month, Painted Heart is a JRPG inspired game and while the concept may not be original at all, it's well executed has a good art and the combat is deep. Talking about the combat, each attack has an element attached to it and you need to exploit the enemy element by using an attack that is strong against it.

Among The Willows - 2015/2016 (PC, Mac, Linux)

Everyone has enemies, just make sure you don't make the wrong ones.

So us devs at Neon Deity Games (Shutshimi) made and submitted our entry to Game Boy Jam 3. I thought maybe you guys might want to give it a shot.

It's called Meowgical Tower. It's a top-down Zelda-style game made with Game Boy limitations, playable in any browser that supports Unity Web Player for free. I'd be curious to know what you guys think.

Aw you're making me blush. Yeah, the birds are pretty dickish. It's awesome that it makes you miss the old system... that means we probably did an ok job haha

That may have been me who commented earlier. I ended up caving and picking the game up, and I agree with what you're saying.

Earlier I said it was too easy when I played it at PAX, well they definitely made it harder, but all the difficulty comes from the random draws. Combat is still piss easy, but you get fucked over by the random chance, and not in the crazy 'FTL' fun way. It's more like ....

'Roll this die!'

...<roll>

'You rolled a 1! Congratulations, you lose!'

Definite thumbs down for the moment. Had some technical issues as well, but nothing too crazy.

Played Hangeki for about 30 minutes. I'm enjoying it. It takes your well established Space Invader formula (ship on the bottom, formations of various enemies above) and spices it up with all manner of cool weapons, combo-focused action, and visual spectacle. The spectacle makes the game really, as you obliterate your enemies with waves of fire, energy swords, gatling lasers, swarms of missiles, and more, all accompanied with crazy particles and wild colors. Visually intense, fast-paced action

I just played that today at Gamescom with an Oculus Rift. Kiiiinda impressive.
Will you be posting impressions later so we can experience the awesomeness vicariously?

Five Nights at Freddy's - $4.99, free demo (PC)

http://www.desura.com/games/five-nights-at-freddys

From your small office you must watch the security cameras carefully. You have a very limited amount of electricity that you're allowed to use per night (corporate budget cuts, you know). That means when you run out of power for the night- no more security doors and no more lights! If something isn't right- namely if Freddybear or his friends aren't in their proper places, you must find them on the monitors and protect yourself if needed!

Only SteamGAF's GOTY last year.
Okay so it was just Tesseract and I's, but still.

Sometimes we know what we're talking about

Hey, now, I wrote the blurb for IndieGAF Best of 2013
Trying to take all the credit, smh :p

That game is so addicting, I feel I improve in every run I try (except when I accidentally explode myself) like I discovered you can demolish some walls with your pistol and it has some good items inside these secret areas, or you can save ammo and explosives by luring the enemies into a glitch. The craft system, albeit simple, works really well and is easy to remember which items you need to craft another one.

The best thing ever is when you're fleeing for your life and then you craft a cangun and clear the entire room in one shot
