Destiny PS4 pre-load available now

Unlike Steam, Sony can't piss off retailers with 12et unlocks for all North America.
Steam has 3am, 12pm and 1pm Eastern releases as well. In my experience the 1pm releases are the most common, which is far worse than the 3am situation we're currently facing.

Pretty sure it's a publisher decision anyway.

First, why would the publisher want to give people reasons to abandon the digital versions since they stand to profit the most by getting people to have a version that can't be resold. Second, why would they use a contract to explicitly give retailers a 3 hour head start in an almost malicious fashion?
Answer to both questions: Because they need to maintain a good relationship with the retailers.

I have a question guys. I preordered the digital guardian edition for the ps4 a couple weeks back, and a few days ago the installers/vanguard add on was downloaded to my ps4. I can't figure out how to actually download the large 17ish gig file for destiny though. When I go to the app on the dashboard and the ps store, it gives me a countdown timer for destiny, but also gives me an option to preorder it for 60 bucks. Did my order not go through or something? I don't have an option to download. Can I delete the installer and reinstall it?

Press Options then Information. It'll tell you the status of the download.
As for the buy option, I'm pretty sure it'll go away come Tuesday.

The only thing they might have done is told Sony that they can't roll out a whole region based on the early time zone.

ok whhy would sony set different times for different games?

Is Sony not a retailer? If they had the ability to release per time zone, and not per region, why would they ever agree to such a contract?

Okay, then why would Sony release almost every other big PS4 game (Infamous, TLoU, Madden, NHL, etc.) at Midnight EST and suddenly choose Destiny as the one they wait until Midnight PST for?

Half of those are published by Sony, so they can break street date however they want. As for the other two, are they EA? Maybe EA just doesn't care if they break west coast, where Activision does care.

Edit: to maybe clarify my point, isn't street date just that, the day that it can release? What you're saying is that every physical retailer has a street date of 9/9, but Acti, specificity gave Sony multiple street dates. 9/9 for the west coast, and 9/9 3am for the east coast. Doesn't add up to me.

I should have just got PS3 version since I probably won't play at 3am on PS4. Could have had both versions for same price the next day.

I tried starting a Twitter campaign, but so far it hasn't gained any momentum. It just doesn't effect enough people here since most are enthusiasts buying physical copies, in different parts of the world, have to work the next day and really won't have a chance to play until the afternoon of the 9th, are willing to set an alarm for 3am.

I'm sure it's because they have no automated system for doing it. There is literally a person who probably has to change an option to make it available. Sony needs to seriously update their backend. I'm still waiting for an option to change my psn id.

I've noticed it tends to be based off where the developer is located. Bungie is in Cali which is PST. All of the Sony titles were dictated by Sony and I'm sure they said specifically they wanted midnight EST.
Sony has said many times, its up to the developer when the game unlocks. I bet anything most of these devs said to Sony, "midnight, date xyz" and Sony said, "ok, lets see midnight your time it is!"

To think Sony can't conjure a way to roll out digital game releases via rolling timezones is insane.

What's more frustrating is that they put out their pre-load feature as a way to get into the game as soon as midnight strikes, yet here we are.

Grade-A bullshit.

I live in Finland, and the counter displays 1d 02:22 right now, which is exactly at midnight here.

It's more of a US problem everyone there has to wait until PST. So it'll be couple of hours past midnight.

more specifically it's more of a "US/Canada with 4 times zones" problem. a problem a relatively small number of other counties have.

Ah, I thought it was at midnight everywhere.

Nope I'm one of the few that has to wait till 3 am. I'm just going to wake up earlier and play some before class.

You would think they could do rolling release by time zone.

problem is there's no real way to determine "where" someone is in the US that can't be gamed/tricked. Easier/smarter to just set a US unlock time as a whole.

I won't be buying digital on big console games unless it's midnight est. I'm use to it on steam but at least I could use a VPN to unlock it early. A couple of my friends won't be able to join me because of this. Smh

That sucks, but what can you do. I'd prefer an evening release myself, as I can't play it for long at that hour. If at all, in case the PSN gets overloaded.

There *are* ways to do it that would make timezone spoofing too much of a nuisance to bother with but then we'd get threads a few times a month from the handful of ppl who legitimately moved between timezones complaining that they wait an extra hour or two for a game to unlock.

Of course there will always be some complaining, going back years any big digital release on PC would always see a few ppl bitching that they can't unlock it early. Like the fact that it's "tomorrow" in Europe already and they can play is an outrage. I wonder if that's why some companies, especially for mmo's, use 12am pacific time as the start and make the release date the next day for Asia/Europe etc.

Just the vanguard pack and if you pre-order at Gamestop, a red sparrow. Nothing important. The vanguard pack just makes the beginning of the game a bit easier.

Red Sparrow isn't even really a thing. If you read the fine print, all of its performance enhancements can be matched on the other sparrows without DLC just by in game progressions, and the skin is available starting after January 15.

Glad I started today. Been going since noon and only at 10GB. Poor PSN. I remember downloading Knack and KZ:SF at launch at 30mb. :(

honestly as sad as I am that I cant play it midnight, I probably only would have created my character and gotten to the Tower, and that's it. I have a busy morning. So all this means is that I have to do it the day after/

I'm sorta confused: I have my Vanguard Armory installed, but how do I get my Guardian content?

I'll add to that. I think the Guardian stuff is part of the main game, but only unlocked for those with the Guardian edition.
Like on disc DLC that they'll sell later? Or like its part of the game and this is more of a paid shortcut to use it without earning it?

Everyone has this issue. It will be unlocked when the game is unlocked. No worries.
I'm having the same problem as him, it's not that we got an error code like everybody else and it still shows up as installed under add ons. We standard digital owners got nothing at all, no download error, no vanguard notification that shows it's downloading, no add ons tab under related items, no add ons under library, we got nothing.

You won't get the ps4 version until you unlock the ps3 version. Sorry :(

You'll probably be able to do that when the game is unlocked.
