Heh, no. Abyss isn't even in the running. It's a great game, and one of the best Tales games. It's also my personal favorite, thanks to this guy right here.

Before people ask, yes he does have a Pac-Man belt.

Not really, Final Fantasy is still far more popular and has an actual legacy compared to that garbage bin series.
Don't you dare call tales a garbage bin series. That's completely untrue. If anything Final Fantasy is reliving old glory because every since XII. They been pumping out less than stellar games, delay after delay. Refuses to port games over or HD remake.

Tales > Final Fantasy

But the Tales series has an actual battle system.

Tales has a different battle system in every mothership game. That's what make Tales combat system so interesting. In Xilla you have the buddy system, in Abyss you have the Fonic system, etc. They have highly improved the combat since Symphonia. The last button smashing tales game. And I actually love Symphonia.

TALES GAMES FOR LIFE!

I've only played vesperia, I liked it enough to spend like 120hrs on it, although I think the story could've been done better (although I didn't find anything wrong with it), the characters were likeable. It's also the tales game with my favorite art direction and character design, I'm not sure what happened but I didn't find the later games to be that appealing visually despite vesperia was one of the older games last generation.

I think part of the reason why I liked vesperia was the world map and the game has a pretty big scale like the old jrpgs, it gave me the sense of adventure similar to blue dragon which I also enjoyed last generation. I have a feeling these games will be lost in time if they don't port them to new systems.

Only thing I dislike about vesperia is that you could easily miss most of the sidequests because they are triggered by backtracking, etc, I had to use a guide for that.

Well it's good to see Microsoft doing the 'anything Apple can do we can do too!' with Windows 9. Fingers crossed there's lots more infor tomorrow at that event they're holding.

Well folks, im offically 21 now :). I think I might get out of work early today so might actually be able to enjoy my day a bit (after my required nap, I wake up too early for this shit)

Happy B'day!

I just noticed the Pac-Man belt.

EDIT: Goddammit!

Tales > Final Fantasy

nope, not even close. Tales basically became annual middle to low tier series, that still hasn't produced a single must play game. They are good at what they do and cater to their fans, but FF13 still is a better game, at least for trying new things, which whenever Tales try (ToL, ToG), fans rage and throw fits. (><)

that's great (><)

I would say Tales of suffers from the "anime-trope" syndrome. After Vesperia almost each of the party members in Tales of games fit into a generic anime trope, which is kinda sad.

What do you mean after Vesperia, Tales always were anime influenced series, and not hiding that, also Vesperia is no better.
I don't see how vigilante is not anime trope too.

Tales of Symphonia
Tales of the Abyss
Tales of Vesperia
Tales of Graces
Tales of Xillia
Tales of Xillia 2
Tales of Zestiria(Upcoming)

I'm guessing these would garner the most interest?

I would buy all of those on Steam. Even Graces F, the one I hate the most! Just so I can support the series!

But my top 3 would be Vesperia, Symphonist and Xillia 2 in that order. Abyss is a close 4th.------
Also naming-wise. All Tales games has name that are subtly referring to something within the plot of the game.
Examples:
Symphonia:
about how Lloyd and the party try to make the two worlds coexist peacefully.
Abyss:
about the dark secrets surrounding Luke's past
Vesperia:
Vesperia is the name of the Guild Yuri is in, Brave Vesperia
Graces F:
about the graces and supplier of friendship. Friendship play a big role in the game.
Xillia:
Xillia is a play on words of "Zillion" which mean countless. Baba, changed it into an X to signifify that life is "unknown" and that going through life we encounter countless events, good and bad.
Zestiria:
come from the Japanese word Zest, which mean enthusiam or passion. Since we don't know much about the story. I can't comment more.

What do you mean after Vesperia, Tales always were anime influenced series, and not hiding that, also Vesperia is no better.

I know that. I just think Vesperia in terms of characters e.g. Yuri was a bit different from what we see in Graces.

I played Abyss and couldn't make it after I got to the desert area.
The jRPGS we need on steam are the Atelier games. That is some good stuff.

You're going to like Zestiria then, since its supposed to be much more open than Xillia. Back to old school style.

If you don't think Vesperia and Symphonia are a must play. Something is wrong there. Also FFXIII is better? Come on Arthea.. Comeeeeeee On. Bruh.

As Arthea say, tales games have always been influenced by anime, and it does it well. If you're not into anime, it would be hard to get into Tales game based on the look of it alone.

We don't talk about Graces F much. Its an abomination. The black sheep.

agreed to the core. I would so prefer to have them on steam. And considering there are not that much alchemy games in general, let alone lighthearted or comedic JRPGs, Atelier would do good on steam.
not gonna happen though (._.)

lol Ok, maybe that was a bit of a stretch
but I was talking about new concepts, new battle systems mostly, not like I'm saying FF13 is a good game, but bs is new and good.
And I wasn't being fair because ToX try new things, not that they are fun but still.

Ya, Graces has to be abomination, no game should be so fun to play!

Fingers crossed they don't mention games ... at all.

Other than the old Steam cross-buy dream, what good can possibly come of it?

I get the feeling it's more going to be directed towards Enterprise customers and OEMs than the general public so fingers crossed it's more to do with the OS at the core and not the ecosystem. Seeing as word and basic info of the Technical Preview leaked yesterday I guess we might get a lot more details sooner than later.

I still quite perflex that Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the best manga/anime ever and we still don't have a good jrpg based on it. So much potential with a story about alchemy, conspiracy and brotherhood.

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
I wish MS would bring ilomilo+ to Steam already. A port of an X360 XBLA game has no business being a WinStore exclusive.

Received a couple of
non Steam
games today that I've been wanting to play for a really long time. As much as I've completely embraced digital distribution for 99% of my gaming, I have to say that it's still kind of exciting to receive physical copies in the mail once in a while :p

I'm hoping it's not a dirty OS upgrade like the 8 to 8.1 transition. I still don't understand why they can't deliver updates as service packs through Windows Update like they've always done.

The original Binding of Isaac for 99c is a fantastic deal. It's a great game and I've sank so many hours into it, I'm sure you'll be satisfied with that purchase. It has a bunch of content, it's good fun, you'll have a great time.

However, it looks like Rebirth will be improved in every way, include a great deal more content and gameplay improvements, and is almost like a sequel and a remake mixed into one. I think that it'll definitely be worth the higher price. It's one of my most anticipated games this year.

I'd say play the first game and see if you like the style of it. Good news is that owners of the original game get a 33% discount on pre-ordering the game on Steam, so you'll actually still save money if you decide to pick up Rebirth before launch. Failing that, you can enjoy the original and wait for another sale somewhere down the line if you're not willing to commit just yet.

Well, by purchasing BoI, rebirth is now -33% for you. Right now it is cheaper to buy BoI, and then buy Rebirth then it is to just buy Rebirth.

But yes BoI is amazing and well worth that single euro.

Sell the cards and it's even cheaper. Also as a beginner consider disabling the WotL DLC as it makes the game harder.

Thank to you all for the replies! :)

Probably in my case is better to wait for a massive sale.

My game backlog (Wii, Ps3, 360, Wii U, 3DS and last but not least Steam) is growing exponentially... while my time to play games is decreasing at the same rate :(

I want a PC release for Eternal Sonata, played 360 version back in days, I know there's a PS3 version with some new features, I really liked it.

This please. Eternal Sonata was baller. For the record, I love both Tales of and Final Fantasy. But both have shit-tier games in their franchise.

.

I am totally into anime and manga. Otherwise I would have about 800 volumes of manga here.

The problem I have, that the characters in Tales of often are acting like they come out of a Shounen-Manga. You often have the "young hero", some spectacled intelligent guy, some tsundere, some really innocent one etc.

Sure, but before that let's have:
Shin Megami Tensei 3/Strange Journey/4
Shadow Hearts 1/2/3
Valkyrie Profile/Silmeria/Covenant of the Plume
Resonance of Fate

Yeah. These are the ones I would like to see. At least these offer more "mature" topics and characters.

Edit: Sorry for the double-post :D

I finally caved in and preordered FF XIII from GMG. Let's hope it's as good as it seems.

It you'll survive first 20-30 hours, it'll get better after that, getting to better parts that is the true test of perseverance. On the plus side, it's pretty and soundtrack is nice, even first 20 hours.

That's really not true.
For the first 20 hours the game is structured exactly like FFX was, then you get a big area full of optional monster hunts, making the game more like FFXII, than it goes back to linear (FFX) progression for the final dungeon.
If you were okay with FFX's hallways, you should be okay with FFXIII's hallways. Really.

I'm hoping it's not a dirty OS upgrade like the 8 to 8.1 transition. I still don't understand why they can't deliver updates as service packs through Windows Update like they've always done.

I get the feeling from a few of the slides and pics of the page that got taken down yesterday that the buzz words are around productivity, connectivity and usability so I don't know if there will be too many kernel based improvements but productivity and for me lack there of is my biggest head ache using 8.1 for work.

Over the last couple of OSes, Service Packs seem to be used a bit more sparingly. XP had 3, Vista 2, 7 only the 1 and 8 I suppose you could say 8.1 was as well. Though this might be due to the length of time each was in widespread use. Some Linux distros deliver a constant stream of updates and refreshes and Apple have been on OS X for 13 years now with regular updates almost on a yearly basis and at a enticing cost to update. The regular 5ish year and £80-£180 cost to update cycle with Windows doesn't look like good value to me compared to the other two so if the free upgrade for previous owners is true (and it's been rumored for several months now) then that's a step in the right direction for me. Though opening it up for free to anyone with a valid key from past versions might get some people off legacy OSes and move over to 64bit ones too.

Nope, that's not true at all, you get your leveling and full combat system at once in FFX, also you get bltizball almost immediately after first few locations, not to mention you get a plot and character introduction-development, something is happening all the time at the start. While in FF13 you get 20 hours long tutorial, where you don't even level, and basically not much is going on, to put it mildly.
FFXII doesn't change either, nothing is happening almost never after the start, that's probably 5-10 hours in, even if world is vast.
We are not talking about linearity here, at least I am not, I'm talking about boredom.

I don't see how anyone can call Borderlands 2 bland. I loved it. Loved the characters, the setting, the missions, the co-op. It was one of my favorite games the year it came out.

Now, the first one was bland. But the second one? Amazing. Though I suppose I should note I loved characters like Tiny Tina, who annoyed some people. I laughed my ass off at her nonsense. But even if you didn't like her, she (and many other characters) are anything but bland.

Some of the characters were okay, but the gameplay was fucking bland, as were the 3 enemy types per "genre".

Well folks, im offically 21 now :). I think I might get out of work early today so might actually be able to enjoy my day a bit (after my required nap, I wake up too early for this shit)

Happy birthday.

Awwww yiss! Tales love. I'm fairly skeptical it would actually happen, but I would love for the series to come to PC.

why do you believe it so easily? Abyss is one of the best Tales games, only playing it is a bit painful, on PS2 that is, it runs really bad.

Heh, no. Abyss isn't even in the running. It's a great game, and one of the best Tales games. It's also my personal favorite, thanks to this guy right here.

I like you guys. Never understood the Abyss hate.

I don't see how vigilante is not anime trope too.

The problem with a lot of the tales characters isn't that they are filled with anime tropes. It's that a number of the characters in recent games are pretty much 1-dimensional characters that are completely defined by anime tropes and have no depth beyond them. Sure, Yuri wasn't exactly free of tropes and cliches, but he felt like a developed character with his own hopes and motivations, rather than simply following a template. He was in conflict between his hope for a better future, and his cynicism that anything would ever change
(which is what lead to his vigilante streak)
. He's actually quite a rare character for a JRPG lead
(most vigilante characters are constantly bitter and obsessed with revenge, but that was not the case with Yuri)
.

Asbel was simply generic shonen protagonist, and never really did anything interesting or surprising. Cheria was as much of a cookie-cutter tsundere childhood friend as you could possibly get.

I feel like Vesperia probably had the biggest budget in the series. Namco really wanted to reach the western audience with that game (it even launched in the US less than a month after the Japanese launch), and Microsoft clearly gave them a money hat to put the game on the 360. Sadly, it sold terribly on the 360. I doubt we'll ever get a tales game with a large budget again, and the same goes for the localization budget.

It was a really beautiful game though. I still remember the town that was a giant cherry blossom tree quite fondly.

Only thing I dislike about vesperia is that you could easily miss most of the sidequests because they are triggered by backtracking, etc, I had to use a guide for that.

This is the one part of the tales series that I wish would die in a fire. I'm fine with backtracking if there is a reason to do so. But when I miss out on the majority of the side content, because I didn't backtrack to every single town in the game repeatedly at every possible point in the story. If you want me to go back to the first town for a sidequest when I'm halfway through the story, give me a reason to do so; don't expect me to do so all on my own, and then talk to a random NPC who has never had anything interesting to say, but this time gives me a sidequest that is only available at the exact point in the game that I'm at, and will disappear if I advance the story line even slightly (even when there is no story reason why). I don't want to have to read a guide to play RPGs, but they really design these games to force you to do that. For shame Namco.

If we're going to discuss games being brought to pc than my vote goes for bringing the good Ace combat games over. Is such a a feat possible? Hell if I know, but I would be very happy if it happened.
