NYCC: Grim Fandango on PS4 is Pretty Much the Best Thing Ever

Yeah I'm also curious. It always gets so much praise.

Its a hilarious adventure game with a really cool film noir meets Day of the Dead world, filled with a lot of fun characters and a compelling puzzle-filled plot. It was also a big bomb sales wise and led to LucasArts canning the adventure games they put out, so its got the cult classic thing going on, too.

Day -5825.

But alas...

We wait.

Why would Sony publish that game or even Grim Fandango on PC?

When Shin-Ra said "port it across," I took that to mean a Full Throttle remaster for PS4 and PS Vita "and make it easily available for Mac/PC too."

As for the matter of the Grim Fandango remaster on PC, Sony made that possible.

I kind of wish tank controls were still an option. Overall great to read the positive feedback from the demo. Can't wait to see shots of the remastered backgrounds and characters.

What makes Grim Fandango so great? Never played the original.
Interesting setting, it has personality up the wazoo, great characters, great writing, fun art style (though obviously a bit dated graphics-wise, at least the original) and there are some pretty tricky yet well designed puzzles. It's definitely in the GOAT & God Tier of adventure games.

I haven't been able to find any articles about Sony except that partially funded the game to be released on Playstation and that was after Double Fine had made a deal with Disney to re-release it.

Hmm, I found this "Talk about other platforms soon! Sony's been a great help making this happen & we're excited to be working with them on the console version!"

Ah, I hadn't seen anything about the IP licensing after the initial announcement thread on GAF. Speculation was that Sony had helped in negotiations.

Thanks for the correction. If Double Fine funded the remaster on PC themselves, then perhaps they can do the same for Full Throttle.

Wtf, this was all explained on Giantbomb e3. Adam Boyes got the whole thing going.

Alright so forgive me here, but in layman's terms what are the differences between tank style controls and analog controls?

With tank controls, forward and backward movement of your character is relative to your character's current facing direction (as opposed to the camera's point of view). Left and right movement rotates your character in those directions (as opposed to making your character move to the left or right relative to the camera's point of view).

Tank controls don't require the player to be able to move the camera. For this reason, tank controls are usually used in games with fixed cameras, such as games with pre-rendered backgrounds.

Basically old Resident Evil games before 4 and old Alone in the Dark games.

Yeah, I'm probably the only gaffer that doesn't pay attention to GiantBomb (not that I don't like them).

Boyes getting the ball rolling was my initial impression.

Gone are the tank controls, aka the bane of existence. Now you can navigate the Day of the Dead-themed world as you would any other modern 3D game. This makes puzzle solving and exploration even more enjoyable than it was before.
Err, this was already present in the original game. You could always toggle between character-relative and camera-relative.

One thing I want from DF is for them to implement the mouse-controls option that was modded into the original release, I'd prefer that over tank/analogue controls.

Ok, I'll listen to it when I get a chance. I did find another video about that :

still not very many details

When Disney and LucasArts began licensing their properties to other developers last year, Double Fine reached out to arrange a deal that would allow them to resurrect Manny Calavera, travel agent to the recently deceased, and all the other skeletal inhabitants of The Land of the Dead. With the assistance of a passionate team of believers at Sony, that day has finally come. New audiences and dedicated fans alike will now have the opportunity to play the original classic, remastered for modern platforms.

Well when you take one of the greatest games ever made and make it even better, then yeah, it pretty much is the best thing ever. Can't wait to play this masterpiece again in all its remastered, reworked glory.

Realistically speaking, and coming from a Grim Fandango virgin I have to ask: how difficult/impossible would've been to get the game running in true 16:9? It's a remake, why couldn't they add that extra space?

Depends on how much they're investing in the remake, but the backgrounds are all pre-rendered and I imagine they don't have access to the original 3D models anymore. So it'll be like the REmake situation.

If the game is priced decently I will definitely be getting it for Vita. I did just replay it in 2012, but it should be worth it for the commentary alone.

Looking forward to FINALLY playing this game in all it's glory after all these years (played a demo as a kid when I was very, very young and was never able to play it by normal means, until now).

This will be a day-one buy on my PS4. I hope this eventually finds its way to the Xbox One as well. A game like this should be available for everyone to play.

Can't believe there still aren't even any teaser screenshots... I want to see what the new effects look like.

4:3 ratio = no buy.

Yeah, they're not taking full advantage of the PS4 hardware. Needs 1080p 60 frames with all the gigaflops. When was this game made, the 90s? Save me the time, nothing made before 1,000 P's was standard is worth playing. How a game runs is more important than anything else by a factor of ALL. What trash.

I can't wait for this, although "wow, they look just like their cutscene models!" is, uh. Well. Maybe not the best way to sell me on visual upgrades.
