Its fortunate for Sony that they are on track to win this year's holiday season despite it being one of their weakest years for their first party output*. Especially when MS is at full stack. Of course, we still have 3 months and few of the bigger MS games have yet to launch. Anything can happen.

Talking quantity, not quality.
1st party games (unless Nintendo) do not decide which platform sells more. Majority of sales come from the big third party games w/ big budgets. Naughty Dog put a lot of effort into making Uncharted awesome, yet Assassins Creed on PS3 managed to outsell it. CoD would outsell any first party FPS Sony put out.

It's hard to see where Xbox One goes from here: MORE pack-ins, MORE bundles? Wait for Master Chief Collection? Work on reducing cost so you can do a 'real' price drop?

Nothing is obvious to me at least.

Buy parity for all 3rd party games.

And damn, my prediction of ps4 doing only 50k more was waaaay off.

I have no idea what you personal preferences are. I am talking generally: I'm saying that many people use a specific framing because it's convenient for their argument, and that as soon as that framing is no longer convenient for their argument, they will alter it immediately.
You really have no need to know what my personal preferences are to address the main question I asked which was about what made this particular framing all that convenient or abitrary? You said we can stratify any way we want but that glosses over stratifications that truly exist outside of fan rhetoric and can be corroborated by market data.

Sport is slightly different though, there are a lot of teams therefore much more likely competition to keep the sport interesting, it is easy to hate and wish for your direct rivals to do worse.

If for example Nintendo and Microsoft both did disastrously and left only Sony with the console market share it wouldn't be so great hence wanting all three to succeed.

I don't understand the people wanting any other console to fail because of the one they've chosen, my initial question was poorly worded, of course people will want their own to do well other wise you wouldn't buy it or there wouldn't be follow ups to it. I don't think sport is a great comparison really but yes I imagine most fans of their respective consoles don't get on like idiots unfortunately can just be very vocal.
It's not about wanting a console to fail, its about yo ur console of choice succeeding. It's self-validating and if you have the most popular console it just makes you feel better. Who wants to be the only one in a circle with an Xbox One or Wii U?

It really is just like sports. Maybe smartphones would be a better comparison though.

I don't think AC outsells UC on PS only unless you taking about UC1.

Definitely, I don't think there is very much chance they get close to Sony this time around barring something monumental like a ridiculous price drop, but I imagine they'll still be wanting to keep the Xbox brand relevant and perhaps learn from their awful mistakes for next time around.

Will be interesting to see how long this generation lasts for both, although I think what Nintendo does next will be of most interest
I fully expect Nintendo's next home console to be more like Vita TV and less like PS4. Small, compact, affordable and powerful enough to get the job done.

Microsofts output is nothing special either. They're holiday title is an HD collection.
2015 is when the real next-gem titles release.(Uncharted 4/Halo 5)

Only 3M, how terrible. Kotick am cry. What is this nonsense?

Also, I'd have to look into it more, but I don't think we're anywhere near the holiday sales spike. This is September NPD, it's not even CYQ4.

Meanwhile, I have to agree with kaching, segmentation is useful, from stock standard demographic segmentation to more nuanced segmentation focused on behaviours and psychographics. I don't really understand the opposition to using it as a tool for analysis.

I honestly thought bone was going to win March with Titanfall. I was ready to place money down on it. But then it didn't. So honestly, now, I don't know what to think.

I'm thinking again the Xbone will win November with MCC, but I am doubting myself. But then again, Sony is pretty much tapped out this holiday. They have jack shit while MS still has Sunset and MCC. So yeah, Sony has the momentum, but MS has the exclusives.

Fuck, its 50/50 for me right now.

I'm a serious Halo fan but Halo 4 multiplayer left a foul taste in my mouth. It felt like COD with a Halo skin. I'm not sure a remaster can give Microsoft that shot it needs. Hopefully I'm wrong. I'm actually kind of glad this happened, Microsoft is paying attention to their consumers more. You can tell from each firmware update.

Do we have Xbox One numbers for September?

Indeed. If you take away the bundle, Sony would have still sold more than 238K PS4s and the Destiny bundle sold more than X1 despite being more expensive and one less free game thrown in for that week. That's the level of perceived value disparity that's being dealt with here.

AC does not outsell Uncharted. UC sells more and will shred AC if it were multiplat. Hell TLOU would have shred AC if multiplat. It sold 7 million on one console. Imagine if it were on all consoles.

Third party games matter most to a game library. Case in point, it allowed MS to coast virtually free of charge for a large portion of last gen.

First parties in the long run make the console more attractive, but for the average audience, playing their mutiplatform games on the 'best' unit is what they like most.

I think the most logically consistent explanation for the PS4 outselling the XboxOne in the territories where the 360 outsold the PS3 are that the PS4 was cheaper at launch, had the positive mindshare of having better multiplats, and the positive publicity of having exclusive marketing deals for huge releases like Watch_Dogs and Destiny. Even after the PS3 dropped down to an equal or lower ASP than the 360 and eventually closed the gap on multiplatform games, it didn't matter, because consumers had already made up their minds. MS made the mistake of believing that the 360 fanbase was made of people loyal to their brand, rather than people loyal to what their brand had previously embodied (high end graphics and superior online play at competitive prices).

The Xbox One isn't doing nearly as poorly as the PS3, but it is currently in some grey area between it and the 360 in NA. I think that not having a true Gears or Halo sequel for this fall will really hurt its trajectory going into next year (I'm as excited as anyone for MCC, but remakes gonna remake). And they have the added bonus of every multiplat they advertise working against them, as it simply makes the PS4 more desirable.

The console will end up with tons of good games and multiplats are selling well enough that it won't lose support, but dreams of winning the online sales wars are pretty much over barring a miracle.

Off topic: PS3 was one of the best comeback stories in video game history.

On topic: I actually agree with this post. I honestly thought Titanfall had the best chance of throwing Xbox One ahead of PS4. It had amazing showcases on showfloors, serious hype, amazing (somewhat biased) reviews, and a ton or marketing cash behind it. Not to mention that it was a fresh new IP. Neither Watch_Dogs or Destiny had the reviews going for them like Titanfall did. It's not the price or the games. September proves that people would rather spend more money on a PS4/Destiny Bundle than buy an Xbox One and get Destiny for free. Granted Microsoft's promotion only lasted for a week.

People grow up with a certain brand or franchise and want to do it well. I grew up with Nintendo and my teenage period was dominated by Playstation. I think that's why I'll root for them the most.

Everyone has favorites and prefers something over something else.

Using the words grow up while rooting for your console like some cheerleader seems like an oxymoron to me. It amazes me how adults can get so emotional with an object that cost $400.

Oh great, Aqua got banned.

Wth? What is the cause of this?

OT: exclusives matters more in part generations because it seemed like the majority of 3rd parties were making exclusives for each console. In some cases, games like Aladdin and Lion King, had completely different versions released on each console. Those days are long gone. Exclusives add value to a console, but aren't what define them as much as they once did

Nothing is obvious to me at least.

It is a difficult situation and it's clear MS doesn't have the answer yet. They had a serious perception problem since before launch that has slowly improved but not nearly enough to overcome the PS4 momentum. They need to do something drastic to get a big push which may not even work in the end. They should probably do a $100 real price cut on both SKUs at a minimum, but they may not want to take the financial hit of that.

Technically, she had herself banned.

Because there seems to be some sort of idealized view of what this forum should be, that we shouldn't resort to any obfuscation to prevent the loss of information that informs our discussion. That doing so is like pushing the button in The Dark Knight. Something I don't really understand since... it's just an internet forum.

What are Disney Infinity's numbers?

dSC6L.gif
Do we have Disney Infinity numbers? How about Diablo 3 or the sims 4?
So it's possible that DI 2.0 sold less than 200K even with the Marvel characters!?

edit:

Disney Infinity 1.0 sold 294K so if the numbers are lower that means interest in the franchise may be decaying.
Yes, if they ever give us numbers again.
Aquamaqueen, please spill the tea on Disney Infinity 2.0

Did Aquamarine or cream sugar show the Disney infinity 2.0 receipts yet?
Seriously, what is your major malfunction?

What..? =< Aqua and Cream gone? I liked and quite enjoyed the e-mail tag method Aqua came up with. So stupid that we lose potential numbers over that.

well npd threads going to get smaller if she gone and cream don't have a source anymore.

Yeah, hopefully her break treats her well. Perhaps when she comes back she uses the system that was discussed and with the reduced risk of the information spreading, we could get more information (or at least the hardware sales, I'm not sure what would happen to the prediction thread without those getting leaked).

I find the sales of Sony's PS4 to be both extremely pleasing and somewhat worrying. Of course, the best console will obviously rise above and win, but it does worry me when the competition is being crushed so much.

People talk about arrogant Sony of the past, and while I doubt such a stance will ever make a return what with their company's current financial situation, I do feel like some arrogance may bubble up. Sales are well, extremely well in fact. However, with competition being smashed to the ground and no real way of picking up and actually competing, is it possible for the industry to continue on the road of innovation?

Again, I am happy to see the better product succeeding. It was clear from the start that the Xbox One's design process faulted at some point, bringing us to where the product is now. Will it climb up and gain a better position? Who knows. I don't think we will see third party support dropping like we are with the Wii U and Nintendo, due to Microsoft still having a quite "next-gen" appropriate console. However, we may see a continued approach of PS4 first, everything else second (outside of PC of course which is usually given free reign approach).

TLDR; Sony has done well, will be interesting to see where the industry goes as a clear "victor" is carved.
