Yeah I guess it just doesn't sit well with me. Nothing else.

Given the association they do between one thing and another (Zoe stuff) , would it really surprise you if they make the connection and shield themselves as victims of people calling them outright murderers/violent sexists in disguise?

They will play victim to any criticism whatsoever, so I really don't see that as a reason to not criticize them.

It's not making fun of the threats, it's mocking how the group is making threats but saying it's about game journalism ethics in the same breath.

If your reflexes are quick enough you might catch the point before it swooshes past.

I understood the point, i'm simply saying the GG side will not react well to it. If that's what these pictures want to do, then go for it. I don't really think mocking and ridicule will end the movement though, if anything (imo) it will make them deflect harder arguing the only way to contradict them (according to them of course) is tying their movement with murders and violent displays against females.

Man that mission in Splinter Cell was so bad. Like I think that's the only time Grim is on screen, and they gave her like boob jiggle, for the scene where you have to beat the shit out of her so she can maintain her cover (and she's wearing like a tight leather jacket so it made no sense in the first place).

Stop It

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.
Right, I'm just going to say this because I'm either having a severe logic fail or I just don't understand peoples mentalities at all.

Let's face it, outside of the façade of "ethics" in journalism, this has been a campaign to get women and gender issues out of not only the agenda when it comes to literary criticism but also trying to keep women out of the gaming industry period. This is because apparently "SJWs" will ruin gaming etc etc.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who just doesn't get that? Having women actually represented in the industry would be the best thing that could happen to it.

One of the misconceptions of the #gg movement is that more women representation = no sex, no violence, no nothing. Last time I checked, TV, Music and film all have far better representation in these forms of media (TV: 28% of "behind camera" roles are filled by women) and constant debates about the "golden age" of TV aside (Hint: It's when you were growing up), these industries are only getting stronger.

Now, gaming has a paltry 11% of women designers, and 3% of programmers, which is frankly shit.

Going back to the above, last time I checked, TV still had plenty of sex, violence, and all the other things that #gg people think will be somehow eliminated when more women enter the gaming industry. Not only is that laughable it actually is detrimental to actual, good content in these fields. Let's face it, leave it to a group of men to decide what is sexy, and you'll get usually no more sophisticated than "hurr, tits!". This shows so obviously in game design it hurts. Getting women actually involved in the creation of content means that you bring their understanding on what men actually like as well, and thus create better content.

If I had to list the people who understood me better than I did, they'd mostly be women. By shunning them in the gaming industry, we do everyone a dis-service and it's it not only women who miss out on opportunities that they deserve, but everyone misses out on better output for all.

Yeah, it'd be terrible for them to think that people are tying their 'movement' to threats of violence against women while saying it was actually about game journalism ethics.

I found a google doc with a ton of gamergate info, but I'm not sure if you guys can access it.
Here it is.
https://docs.google.com/a/mymacewan.ca/document/d/1R-m5FRF--CaL8_uCHtQ-r8TqS77iOZRw3WgQk4irAWU/edit

It's summarizes everything related to gamergate and a lot of the crazy conspriacy theories gamergates created.

Given how journalism sites like Kotaku, NeoGaf and other sites have shifted their focus on most gaming aspects in videogaming journalism, they still had enough readers to keep them up and running.
Oh man, turns out GAF actually is a press site. Someone tell E3.

IGN commented and well.. It's about as much as you'd expect out of them =/

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/10/24/on-the-problem-of-harassment

"The Movement"? C'mon, IGN, might as well go with They-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named at that point. Clown shoes.

I've decided that suggesting #gg-ers donate to Zoe Quinn to demonstrate how they don't side with the "trolls" is the shortest path to either exposing them, or actually helping the victims of their co-gaters.

Felt like sharing my thoughts on #GamerGate on my tumblr. GG is still incredibly fucking stupid, but eh. Click.

I tried my hand at explaining to GGers why their claims were conspiratorial, often debunked & not worthy of widespread media attention.

A large percentage of them refused to budge an inch. Even on obviously untrue claims like Anita lying about calling the police.

People report on the harassment cause ... it's actually real and significantly affecting and scaring many people.

Like how would you fairly report on #GG if not for the consequences of it?

"Many people believe untrue things on the internet!" ?

Is that the new Splinter Cell game? Looks out of character for Sam Fisher to do that.

Second newest. He has to do it because she's undercover and she needs to have an excuse for why he escapes her custody. Splinter Cell's been mired in this sort of aping Jack Bauer funk lately where they set up these scenarios.

That's Splinter Cell Conviction. Sam had been captured and Grimm is helping him escape though they have to make it look like Sam fought his way out. Also he is pissed at her so it isn't all fake. He's really pissed because his daughter is dead. Probably why it looks out of character.

This is after he finds out she's alive. He's pissed because she lied to him about it.

GG doesn't take anything lightly, if there is something they think is an exaggeration in the slightest they attack and dog pile like extremists. They even use common /b/ raid tactics.

If the parody of that meme upsets them I say "who cares". It accurately reflects their own actions and lack of self awareness. They just only go in large circles to skirt the issues of their own movement with hollow and pathetic words like parrots. I've tried having normal discussion (apparently one GGer was okay with me and wanted me on a stream or podcast) but I've had enough of that because it leads nowhere but the same giant circles. Following this since August and watching it escalate has been nothing short of terrifying.

I proposed this before but in the new thread, we should quote dLMN8R's exhaustive list of debunked GG statements in the OP.

Also, wow at Neorice having the most posts in this thread.

I think that would be fantastic, that way when the same falsehoods keep popping up time and time again people can just be referred to the original post.

Oh come on, there's no need for that passive aggressive comment. People get dogpiled for repeating tired and/or duplicitous pro-GG arguments that have been addressed over and over, not for slight differences in opinion.

Fine, I'll bite;

I think it's hypocritical that while we rightfully take GG to task for screaming "false flag" at everything; the second Milo claims someone sent him a syringe, multiple people immediately (in more nuanced words) yell "false flag!"

Post 19783 for stating that Milo said this on NPR, and posts 19794 tries to say "we don't know what it is", 19795 tries to change the subject, 19799 says "how do you know?", 19802 says "someone else could have done it", 19817 says "he is a known liar!!!" (pretty sure everyone alive has lied at some point), 19821 goes more in on the lying, as does 19825. So in 50 posts, we have 7 accusations of lying / false flag.

Why? Who cares if he got something? Why do we feel the need to try to pull the same BS that GG does with all of their false flagging. Congrats; there are insane people on both sides. You still can't be on board with a group that attacks women and the inevitable cultural shift that will happen when something goes mainstream.

ok, rant time

I remember having this argument with someone at PAX 2011. Look. We won. Gaming is mainstream. We have craved acceptance for so long. Why are we losing our collective minds over it? Celebrate the fact that lots of people are going to get into gaming. #GG isn't going to, and never had a chance of doing diddly squat to the dramatic increase and demographic change of our audience. The only reason it didn't happen (and why representation is such a big deal) is that these demographic changes happened during a time of historical corporate conservatism. (Screw shareholder capitalism). Companies are terrified of pissing off stockholders (because of our screwed up tax laws and compensation tied to said screwed up tax laws), and hedge funds are all about predictable growth with no risk-taking. If this happens 20 years ago; we would have seen an explosion in diversity and representation trying to take advantage of the changing demographics. Thankfully Frozen happened so all of these companies are like "oh hey, women will buy shit if you market it towards them". YOU JUST FIGURED THIS OUT??

No, no. You see, all those exclusively negative responses were from a small minority of gamergaters and people trying to make them look bad. All the True Gamergaters were, uh, busy out feeding the needy. Yeah, that's the ticket. Also Todd is a lying poopyhead.

I actually agree with you on this. I had actually started writing something up to call that out, but I was struggling to get my thoughts into proper, coherent words (Yes, even by my low standards). I see no reason we cannot accept that some people against gamergate are bad people that do bad things. I totally condemn that sort of act against any person regardless of who they are or what they've done. Some will say "But how is that different than the pro-gamergate people!?" to which I respond that entire undercurrent of most pro-gamergate discussions is clearly abusive whereas in the anti camp this sort of behaviour really is the exception to the rule.

Yes. I agree. This is why my response to the Milo syringe story was to immediately condemn this and all such vile threats. At the time I feared an escalation.

Whoa there.

The difference here being when GamerGate yells "FALSE FLAG!", it's after someone harassed specifically states that GamerGate supporters have harassed them. Many times these threats are actually sent via twitter with a GamerGate hash tag or GamerGate is mentioned in however the threat was delivered.

Milo has never said that it was anti-GamerGate people who sent him the syringe, nor has he said there was anything related to "anti-GamerGate" contained with it. All he has said was he received a syringe in the mail.

I never doubted the validity of the claim he received a syringe.

EDIT: If someone were to say "MILO SENT HIMSELF A SYRINGE TO MAKE ANTI-GAMERGATE LOOK BAD", then there would be some hypocrisy.

Ok, two reasons:

1) Some gamers were perfectly comfortable being in a "weird", unaccepted hobby. It was their thing.

2) Other gamers wanted gaming be accepted, but didn't want gaming to be embraced. They're unhappy with what they consider interloping non-gamers coming into the hobby that they've always defined themselves with.

Oh, hey I was post 19799...

I'm not saying he faked it or something (I think that's what false flag means). I was criticizing how it was used as evidence to support that people who are against GG act just as badly as those who are for GG, when there was no evidence in the first place to support that it was related to GG in any way.

Not one of the people who said that stuff about Milo, but just 2 cents:

1. We actually have zero information on the source of the syringe as it was a non-verbal non-specified threat.

I don't think pointing out that holding it up as the most undeniable evidence of "anti-GG harassing as well" is going a bit far for that reason. (does Milo even claim this himself?)

I think that timing-wise it'd make sense if it was related to GG, but "anti-GG" often gets described as a seemingly organized whole' which it isn't. So it's a slightly odd thing to blame.

2. I think the liar thing is pushing a bit as people use the exact same reason against Anita. Although his dishonesty is a lot easier to substantiate you're right in stating that you can't just assume everything's a lie as a result.

Outright denying someone got harassed/threatened even if they're known as dishonest/unpleasant just isn't a wise thing to do, largely because character assassination and villification are core parts of any bullying/harassment.

(For clarity: I do genuinly believe Milo got that syringe in the mail. But it shouldn't matter if I had strong doubts about it, you take harassment claims & threats seriously regardless.)

you shouldn't harass anyone even if they're contemptible human garbage like Milo and whoever sent him the syringe should be arrested. and I don't have any reason to believe that he's lying nor do I gain anything from accusing him of lying. because it doesn't matter. he's wrong and gamergate is wrong.

How many #GGer's does it take to remove a light bulb?

Two, one to send it rape threats, the other to insist it's not about light bulbs, it's about ethics amongst electricians.

Ditto. I'm pretty sure that's a sending it through the mail like that makes it a federal crime as well. I hope he presses charges on whoever did that because that's just weird and messed up.
