Just Cause 2 is one of the most "pure fun" games I know of. I thought it did well enough on Steam especially with the fan multiplayer mod, but this news is pretty rough.

If it's not F2P but doesn't have a "traditional" release, then I don't really see any positive directions it can go. Monthly fee? Surely not.

For context, Shinobi recently said this was going to be F2P and they were toying with the idea of rolling out the content on an island-by-island basis.

I could dig that.

Give us a smallish (by Just Cause 2 standards) starter island, and then offer story-line chains (which also come with co-op play and some versus modes) which each come with a new island, or you can go ahead and just buy the entirety of Just Cause 3 for $59.99.

Something like that would actually be a cool way of doing it.

But not with microtransactions. Not like that.

I'll go ahead and sound like a broken record:

JC2 was one of my favorites from last-gen, but fuck this f2p micro-transaction bullshit.

They said a few months ago that they liked the idea of microtransactions

I can see why not, gross

Got jc2 on ps3 and steam but will never buy the third or support it in any way.

That "Buy Now" prompt has me very concerned, I can't see any circumstances where the prompt would be worded that way unless you needed to buy the crystal currency with real money.

Let's just say it may not come out in one piece.

Hmm....

The only thing I can think of is.. Parts of the island in that screenshot aren't unlocked until..you buy...them?

This is likely made by their new American Studio. Original JC2 team is making Mad Max it seems.

I hope this is the case because those screens look like a last gen game. I really can't see a developer of such a great looking last gen game making a below average looking current gen game. I also hope Mad Max isn't also f2p bullshit.

F2P has me terrified. I love JC2 and still play it pretty regularly. If JC3 is a stripped down open world cash grab I will literally cry

Square-Enix isn't going to exist for much longer with all the stupid decisions they've been making recently. If a brand is popular enough to sequalise then surely that popularity is owed to the game being X. Developing Y instead defeats the purpose of capitalising on a brand name.

Renting cars? Alternate currencies?

Just Cause 2 was one of my favorite games of last generation. If they've botched a sequel with F2P mechanics I'm gonna be upset.

Please don't be F2P. Please don't be F2P. Please don't be F2P. Please don't be F2P. Please don't be F2P. Please don't be F2P. Please don't be F2P.

It's not going to be F2P, guys. You'll have to pay £50/$60 first, in order to make use of their innovative and generous microtransaction system. That'll go down well, right?

In 3 pages I went from salivating to wanting to find out who's publishing this mess.

Square Enix. Making everything online F2P is their plan for their western properties going forward.
So far Sleeping Dogs, Legacy of Kain, and Just Cause.
Next is Deus Ex, Hitman, and eventually (sooner rather than later if the next one doesn't launch on other platforms fast enough) Tomb Raider.

even if it's f2p that's fine. Soul Calibur: Lost Sword is probably the best game this year. And that's f2p. Embrace it.

Ah, paymium. By principle a mutation far worse than F2P, because at least the latter doesn't necessarily mean you get swindled.

I can see it now.

*pays good money for the game*

"Ah, brilliant! I loved the previous game and I cannot wait to cruise around in this one and cause unmitigated havoc for Chaos just to unwind from a shitty day at work before I tackle the story missions for rea- ooh, hold on. What's this about getting new vehicles?"

*game suggests you rent virtual vehicles using diamonds*

"...Oh, okay, I guess that's just the currency of this game's fictional countr-"

*the horrific realisation is reached that diamonds are a second currency, the more valuable one in the game that requires real life people*

"You're fucking joking. I've already paid good money for this, you cunts. Not content with what I already gave you, you're trying to psychologically batter me into giving you more spare change now? Fuck you.

"Never mind, I'll just hijack a vehicle and casually drive around the whole place and see how big the world is this time round."

*hits a bizarre invisible wall just before a long bridge leading to a large, hazy landmass on the other end. The game announces to you that the area is currently unavailable, but will be available to buy and download shortly*

I think Saints Row needs to work on a bigger dildo to compete from the looks of it.

Game looks sick!!

Naw, if Saint's Row had a F2P edition, they'd do something hilarious with it, like make it so when you try to enter an area you haven't paid for, an overpowered thug pops up and breaks the fourth wall, holding you up at virtual gunpoint to pay for the zone.
