GTA V on PS4/X1 Review Thread

Kotaku "review" with a lot of gifs.

Does anyone else find this gif jarring ? .. there's no 'splash', or displacement or weight in the way he dives..

yeah, probably nitpicking, but the way it just transitions to underwater is awkward ..

gif wizard dreamlock at your service and I'll take it from here. I opened the image and checked the timeline. Looks to me like they've skipped every other frame, probably why it looks sped up and so weird when entering the water...that particular frame during the transition was removed. It doesn't look like that usually.

Example - watch as he dives.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Thanks, that's a much detailed reply than I was expecting :)

I'm trying to think what sales will be.

Sales will def. be split between a ton of titles so I don't think they will be as high as they would be if this game released on its own, but it will have legs.

Thinking maybe 3m or so on the PS4 over the holidays? I'm sure most owners will buy this at some point or another. I mean GTAV did sell nearly 40,000,000 copies just a year ago so who knows lol.

I think that 5-7 million copies sold in its first week is a reasonable prediction.

I am watching the video review right now. I like this little bit of information they dropped:

"The game remembers your personal preference (first person and third person camera) on foot and in vehicles"

Sounds great. The game can automatically shift to third person in car and first person while on foot if you want it to. I can definitely see some of the issues with first person in car mode though, and I don;t see it as being a fault of the game. Just a limitation of the first person view. But it seems like something that could easily be resolved with an Oculus Rift headset. The game looks like it could be the ultimate VR experience.

That is AWESOME news. Didn't even know how much I wanted a feature like that until now. Permanent first person mode this time around on PC.

Anyone saying a 10 does not mean perfection... what are you on about?

A 9.9 doesn't mean perfection, a 10 DOES.
No discussion possible, that's how it is.

Reviews can be such a joke.

No game is perfect. What's the point in a ten-point scale if one of those numbers is never used?!

Also, it's a bit hard to believe some of the reviews when they claim it as the best GTA. It's not. The story was very forgettable.

All the GTAs have forgettable stories.

For me V is a solid contender for best GTA. It's only challenger is San Andreas and the main reason San Andreas possibly edges it is because it has 3 cities and 2 distinct countryside environments, an unfair metric for a game in the HD era of massive environments.

poor representations of women and frequent hard violence didn't appeal before

This seriously made my eyes roll, because I certainly feel well represented and proud to be a man when I am playing as a murderous meth fiend psychopath.

I preorderd the game for the $1 million cash bonus, but I am probably going to wait to actually play it until they release a few updates. GTA V on the PS3 was a bit better and had more options just a month after release due to updates.

GTA 4 had an amazing story, I actually liked it's serious tone.

I reckon so, yes. It's interesting that the only new IP (for MS) that they've had exclusive promotional deals for as we run up to Christmas, is ACU and that turned out to be terrible. And yet the two titles that Sony have marketing deals for FC4 and GTA5, turned out to be brilliant. That says a lot to me.

Forgetting about Call of duty?

Don't MS always have exclusive deals for COD?

So the keyword was "new". Don't see how that matters. Wasn't gta 5 on PS3 a marketing deal with Sony too?

Pretty sure previous installments of both far cry and assassins creed might of already had deals with Sony/Microsoft respectively. Singling out new makes zero sense.

That last gen framerate. I think I'll keep waiting for the PC version thanks.

Can't help but laugh at the glowing reviews from sites like Metro and Gamespot who seemed to be going out of their way in recent times to give more "critical" reviews to games though. Guess when it really comes down to it the advertiser's dollar is the most critical consideration of them all.

Metro Gamecentral is a small part of a larger non-gaming site & newspaper

They have no need for any "advertiser's dollar", not to mention the fact that both they and their predecessor Digitiser before them have been giving "critical" reviews for over twenty years, but I'm sure you looked into those points before casting aspersions, right?

Yeah, I have been reading their review for years, all the way back in school reading it in the morning on teletext. They have always been very critical.

I was thinking the same thing about the first-person driving mode... similar to most interior modes, even Driveclub. I never use the interior cam in Driveclub when I actually care about racing. But for having fun and immersion, it's incredible. GTAV maybe will be the same way... I mean there's a lot of lost FOV. It's hard to see inside. But I don't think that's the point. Hood cam (is there still hood cam even?) is for control and third-person driving is for view -- interior cams are always a bit of a gameplay-for-immersion sort of thing. I mean, that's a bit of the point... it's a tough balance to want to show as much FOV of the road as possible but still show the interior.

That's funny because for me it's the complete opposite. I driving best in cockpit mode. I stay more focused on the road and seeing the steering wheel helps alot not to overdrive. When playing in third-person mode I always have problems to stay on the road correctly and I'm often to fast in corners. (all Driveclub)

B2T: Reviews sounding good especially the almost solid framerate. I don't care if it dips sometimes when heavy shit is happening like 10 cars explode at once. As long as the overall experience is smooth I'm fine.

GTA V commercials in US state on PS4. I wonder if that will affect sales.

GTAV has a lot of life left in it. I believe this makes the re-release that much more desired. It was a huge leap in performance and the detail to the world is over the top. GTA has always had excellent commercials too. They give away the true spirit of GTA.

I want to see how it works when performing drive-bys. Is there any footage of this yet? Does it auto-switch to third-person or must you take your eyes off the road?

This might be a silly question but you can change the view on the fly right?, its not like an option you have to do at the start of the game?.

So if I go mountain biking, and I go tumbling down hill. Will FPS stay or switch to third? Cause first person tumbling, while a bit disorienting, sounds hilarious.

"The best writing and voice acting you'll see in a video game" - GameSpot

vfpmmHG.gif

Having played GTAV for 360 I think this is mostly true. While some of the writing is weak in the game, there are a lot of really strong moments for it. The "I'm not a hipster" debate between Michael and Trevor later in the game is extremely well written for a videogame.

And the voice acting is good. I can't think of any characters that stand out as being poorly voice acted.

It's really strange. SCEE seems to go all out too. Saw 3 PS4 commercials in just one ad block yesterday. GTA5 was one of them. I never saw PS commercials on Free TV over here in Germany and now there were 3 in under 15min. !!

Yes and Yes.
It will stay.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I haven't played the new one), but there is a setting to toggle it for when your character 'goes ragdoll' where you can have it instantly switch to 3rd person when you ragdoll, and then switch back when you have control. Same for cover, I believe.

In Short: An incredibly ambitious upgrade that not only improves the visuals and gameplay but, through the new first person view, offers a new way to play the best GTA ever.

Pros: Amazing next gen visuals and incredible attention to detail. New first person view works very well and is fully customisable. GTA Online is available from day one and looks just as good.

Cons: The story is as vague and meandering as ever, with not a single virtuous character in the whole cast. Gunplay and driving could still be better, and first person view doesn’t work in every situation.
I don't think this is a problem at all.
Infact, i think it's an interesting thing that GTA usually does, not giving you some obvious "good guy" to root for.

That said, there isn't a virtuous character in the main cast, because i would say the girl Franklin's after is a pretty "virtuous" character (probably the only one in the game).

Yeah the VO in this game is excellent. And the writing can also be sharp. It's the overall story that may be disappointing.

Yes. On the PS4 you do something with the touchpad (either click or swipe), on Xbox One I'm not sure as it's missing the extra input. I assume it might be a pause menu option, but either way you can switch.

I've always thought the VO in the GTA series was always great. V being no exception. Stories are subjective but I really enjoy all of them. I'm also really easy to please. I do think Vs story was a little "all over the place" and I miss having that one main villain you know you will take down. The bad guys in this game are just douchebags. They didn't come across as villainous to me. I prefer that clear conflict... if anyone understands what I'm even talking about.

Other than that I thought the story was pretty well done for having 3 characters. I thought they were developed nicely and I love the "action movie" feels of the game. Great stuff.

Have they tweaked the wanted system at all? Do helicopter still constantly respawn to an absurd degree? Do you still get a wanted level when you punch someone on top of Mount Chiliad? Do cops still have insane accuracy and inflict more damage than any other enemy in the game? Can you still die by falling off a bicycle at full health?

You can choose either. You can have the camera pull out to third person during ragdoll I believe or keep it first person.

Disappointed to see that that swiping up on the touchpad didn't 'make it rain' in first person.

That would have been great. Where's that Sheikh gif when you need it?

Disagree about bolded. GTA:SA main storyline was good. Sure, it was a cliche of "inner city hood story" from the 90s in every hip hop song or movie, but it was better than what they did with IV and V. It had a beginning, middle, and end. It had a bad guy that you cared about and a logical reason for doing the things that you did (mostly). The side stuff was silly and over the top, but that's fine for side stuff.

I agree that the GTAV storyline is mostly crap.
