Definitely the best news of the show.

You don't want the PSP versions, though, even if you think you do. They're inferior versions. Lots of bugs not in the original versions, which are buggy anyway.

Ok GAF I need to know two things:

1. Can I play Suikoden II without playing I without seriously compromising my experience?

If no...

2. How long is Suikoden I (I have a backlog I need to get through so not too much time to add an extra game) and will the time I put into Suikoden I be worth the amount of extra enjoyment I will get out of Suikoden II?

Basically. A lot of dragging feet across the pond, but in particular a new hire from the last few months has been key to making it happen.

The same dude who's job it will be to get those other titles out on other platforms, so let's show Japan that there is a real thirst in N/S America for these legacy titles with S2.

Thank you ToraShiro for your efforts in making this happen. I can't believe I'll finally get to play Suikoden 2! The dream is real.

There are some characters that carry over from 1. I don't know how much of the plot and lore carry over as I haven't played 2 (yet!). I played S1 a few months ago and it took me about 25-30 hours I think, though that was with collecting all 108 Stars.

I am bummed that there is so much traction for digital releases of these games when there is not an external factor involved (ie: licensing an outside property).

But big ups to everyone that made it happen, hopefully it sells well and wakes up the suits to make their legacy software available where the option is there to make it available.

1) Yeah, it's a stand-alone story! The main plot revolves around the protagonist Riou and the political strife between the Highlands and the City State of Jowston. You don't need to play Suikoden I to understand the plot presented in Suikoden II.

HOWEVER, the experience is greatly enhanced when you play the first game because you'll see several characters from Suikoden I returning. Plus, some of the characters expand their character arc quite a bit. Finally, not to spoil it too much, but you'll see several Suikoden I cameos and references thrown in. Even so, you can still play Suikoden II without playing I. You are not going to get that "OH SHIT, moment!"

2) About 15-20 hours.

You can play suikoden II without playing I, but it's not reccommended. You'll miss out on a VERY powerful returning character that can only be gained by importing a saved game from suiko 1, and returning characters and quite a few references will be entirely lost on you. You COULD do it, there's just not a good reason to do so. II is a better game than I, but I is still very good.

If no...

I vaguely remember getting through it in 20-30 hours at the most, but I did use a FAQ for that one to recruit all the stars of destiny. Both Suiko I and II have bad-good-best endings that can only be gotten depending on how many people you recruit- and "best" generally means all of them. The "best" ending in suiko II in particular is impossible without a guide, there's a whole mess of obscure things you need to get in addition to a full army.

Straight ports for now, but we'll see where it goes after the first 3 mo. of sales come in.

Wait, so they'll have trophy lists? Yes!

The only thing that could make this better is if Suikoden III were ported as well. I'm still annoyed it never got a PAL release. :(

Wow, I somehow completely missed that since I was only half watching the press conference while playing Spelunky.
Awesome.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
I KNEW I should have watched this.

I'm happy for the long time fans!

With the second on the way, I definitely feel more motivated to play through the first.

...Though my backlog is kinda crazy right now. Doubt I could play through the first game before next week.

I know just one guy doesn't count for much, but if both games come out in Europe too that's a guaranteed double dip from me. (or is it technically a quadruple dip?)

Thanks for these answers, this is what I wanted to know. Looks like I will be downloading both I and II at this rate

JRPG fans around the world cry tears of joy. Scummy collectors trying to make a profit weep as the Suikoden 2 disc price plummets.

Not just Yuichi, but I and many others (particularly the digital software team) have been working for years to get this up and it is incredibly relieving to finally have the single most requested game in Konami's library available to fans old and new. I even called out those that joined us for the journey in our PSBlog post (on phone right now). Can't wait to talk to you all about what you think of it in the months to come as I replay them on my own Vita.

The best. Two of my all time favorite games on my vita. I am beyond happy about this and thanks to everyone who made it happen.

Yes! Thanks much, Konami. What a beautiful world we live in that Suikoden 2 is now accessible to all (...who have access to PSN).

I found it rather odd they mentioned Suikoden 1 again even though has been out for years.

I thought it was a Vita re-release which fits the Vita screen and trophies.

I have EU gets the PAL versions because the US has the import bug which kinds of ruins the experience.

Such a great announcement, glad I caught it. Probably the biggest reaction I got out of watching any of these conference things since they announced Suikoden V.

Although they are straight ports I really, really wish that the carry over data from S1 "name glitch" would be fixed. I don't mind the War music glitch, Luca Blight party glitch, not being able to hear Annalee's song glitch, Recipe #34 glitch(which has prevented my %100 runs), infinite potch glitch and so on nearly as much as the name glitch, it just really killed an otherwise amazing moment in the game unlike those other problems.

Regardless, thanks to ToraShiro, Yuichi and anyone else who's been involved in this process. I've been waiting so long for this release, it's my favorite game of all time!

I guess it was just PR wordplay meaning that you can actually buy it on a Vita now without requiring other PlayStation hardware (even though that should have been true from day one).

Weird question, but most of the recent PS1 Classics releases have still been downloadable to PSP, right? I recently bought a PSP Go for the express purpose of using it as a portable PS1 (I have a Vita but prefer the Go's size), and I'd be great if I could still get a little mileage out of it.

Yeah, they just don't mention PSP anymore, but it should play Suikoden 2 as it already does 1.

I wouldn't count on it, Sony was spitting on PSP owners when it came to PS1 games when the PSP was still on shelves.

I can check if my Go has a charge, which it probably doesn't.
