Is Pikmin 3 discontinued?

eShop prices are absolutely silly. It's going for fucking 60 right now.

That's the price you'd likely find it at in a store as well as Nintendo never dropped the price on the game from what I could tell. Unless a store slashed it's price to clear out stock and I don't think they ever did with that game. At least on mass. Or you find it used which would result in a higher priced used game as well like many other Nintendo published/created games. One could hold out and see if they ever do a sale on the eshop I guess. There is the demo now as said and one could play that to see if they'll like the game.

I have been for 5 months now trying to buy a copy of Nintendogs for the 3DS for my daughter. EB, Best Buy, Future Shop, Gamestop, Walmart, Target etc...
No one has the damn game and are not getting it.

Like really Nintendo? They don't even sell it on their EShop thing.

I know general availability sucks, but I picked a copy up at Kmart for $30 new just a few days ago (Sunday) near Orlando.

It said they were out of stock everywhere online (it's been listed as $29.99 for a couple weeks now), but I was dropping a friend off at the airport and happened to pass one on the way home and for some reason decided to stop and check inside. Sure enough, there was a copy inside the game case underneath a couple other games. It had like 3 price stickers on it too, with the first from Nov 2013, so I guess it was sitting there for a while.

Probably a long shot and super YMMV, but might be worth actually checking a few places in store instead of just checking their availability online. Otherwise yeah, used or digital is probably your best bet.

Damn I just picked up a wii u too and was thinking about getting a disc copy. Looks like all thats left is used copies at gamestop for $54.99 or digital (still don't trust nintendo's online service). For digital if something were to go wrong with the console (ie: it fails or gets stolen), is there anyway to get your purchased games back? I assume the saves are good as gone but can I still access the games/dlc I bought?

Seems strange Nintendo hasn't printed new shipments, particularly to coincide with the Pikmin 3 push they began in November's Nintendo Direct. It sounded like they were trying to push catalog sales of the game to people that didn't own a Wii U when it first came out.

Everyone who wants the game could get it at the eShop or buy it used. The push with the new pikmin short movies happened at the eShop too. And everyone who watch Directs should know the eShop anyway :)

I think retailers want to use the small Wii U space for newer Wii U games because there will be not much sales of Pikmin3 so long time after release even with the "push".

Most sales of games aren't on the eShop, though. So if the goal is to increase catalog sales of Pikmin 3 by raising awareness of the brand, which it clearly is, then it would make sense to print more copies of the game to sell to people.

Seriously ? Fuck,i'm picking up a Wii U in January and this was one of my most hyped games, and it's already discontinued.

Why didn't you buy it earlier? It was available pretty cheap for quite some time.

I'm waiting for ZombiU to go out of print and then people complaining about that one. Maybe I should buy a few copies.

This is bullshit.
Between this, certain Amiibo and the Gamecube adapter Nintendo are really fucking stupid.

This was obviously going to happen after the movies and demo.

Imo its worth it so get eshop or retail version from Amazon.

Is Mario or Zelda in the name? Yeah, probably a rather limited print run then. Particularly sad since this was supposed to be one of their heavy hitters for launch/first year (and is a great game). Kirby's Return to Dreamland got screwed too, and you can't even buy it digitally since it's a Wii game.

If you see lesser-loved Nintendo franchise games cheap-ish it's often best to pick 'em up, unless they massively overprinted like Kirby's Epic Yarn they probably under-printed and these games never seem to show up as Player's Choice or whatever they call that now.

This was obviously going to happen after the movies and demo.

I would have hoped that "obviously" if they were making significant post-launch promotion for the game they would, you know, actually have (retail) copies available for sale. Digital only is kind of worst-case scenario for a Nintendo game, both because of the account system and because their games tend to benefit from being on store shelves to be seen.

Ubisoft games don't go out of print for a long time.

They are selling ZombiU for 5pounds since this year. I'm pretty sure Ubisoft won't print any more of them. It wouldn't make sense.

And the latest Ubisoft Wii U game - Watch Dogs seems to be low print. amazon-uk was out of stock within days and the only few 3rd party sellers, that are selling it, are selling it for 40-50pounds. This also makes sense. Ubisoft doesn't expect it to sell.

Pikmin3 was one of those games you could get for free on the eShop with Mario Kart 8.

And Pikmin3 has been cheap at retail for quite a long time until it sold almost out every last copy. I doubt there is really much sales potential at retail now besides some gaffer.

And I doubt these brief mention in the Direct was a real try too rise the awareness of the brand. The short movies had been only a "hobby" and a side project for Miyamoto. Perhaps preparing for some bigger movie that includes not necessary Pikmins.

Weird that this thread popped up because I was thinking the same thing this past weekend.

I was watching Newegg a few months back and they had copies for $59.99. I had a $50 gift card I was going to use, but was waiting for the holiday sales to start to catch the game at a lower price. The lower price never came and then all of the sudden they stopped offering the game all together at that price (now it's like $75), so I just said "fuck it" and bought one off of eBay this weekend.

They do, actually - just added it last month. $16.49+tax in Canada.

I got the digital copy from the Mario Kart 8 promo, looks like I made the right choice.

Same here. I'd still like to get a physical copy at some point since I'm weird like that, but it's hard to beat free.

This thread did remind me though that I need to grab the Pikmin 1 & 2 Wii re-releases sometime. They've been holding steady at around $40 each for a long time now so not in a huge rush there, but yeah.

I had a copy from before but I gave it away as a gift because I didn't own a Wii U at that time. I own one now and I totally forgot about the game so I went online to find a copy and it isn't in stock online anywhere. Gamestop, Target and Wal-Mart near me don't have new copies either.

Was it discontinued? Maybe they are prepping a new version of the game with all the updates on the disk?

It is hard to find but Best Buy has some new ones if you check the store locator to see if any are near you.

If you have a Gamers Club Card you get a 20% discount

My local Best Buy has some copies.

It looks like you can order one online and pick your local store.

It wouldn't make very much sense for Nintendo to produce another batch of physical Pikmin 3 copies. They know exactly how much it has been selling in-store since launch, which probably isn't all that much month to month. Not to mention the fact that they make a lot more profit when you buy it on the eShop... and I think that they would be pretty much correct in assuming that the kind of person who would actively be looking for Pikmin 3 now, a year and a half after release, is the kind of person who would know about and have access to the eShop to just download it. The "not until you get a proper account system, Nintendo!" people are a vocal minority who usually wouldn't be Nintendo customers anyway. Same as the "I'll jump in when the system is *current price minus $50*" crowd.

That says "Shipping: Not Available" to me. Anyone else see that?

You are right. I saw the green check mark for store pickup. There are some in stock at the Best Buy near me. Check the store finder. I will edit my original post. Thanks.

If they are going to do a disc reissue of it, it would be the 2.0.0 version. Unless there's another update arriving that we don't know about.

It's a really great game, and the 2-player modes are fantastic.

I wanted to pick this up this weekend when I bought a Wii U, unfortunately it doesn't exist any more. Oh well. Maybe if they do a reissue I'll check it out, but that's not likely at all so I just assume I won't ever play it.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Interesting.

I still haven't opened my copy. I want to play the first two games, and I dunno if I should just start from the beginning. Woe is me, etc., etc.

I have only played Pikmin 3 and never felt that I missed playing the 2 prior games.

Pikmin 3 stars a completely new cast of characters and you see everything from their perspective, so you are only missing out on in-joke types of things if you only play Pikmin 3.

I just picked up the last copy at Walmart for 60 bucks. It was in the Wii section (!?!). Thanks for the tip OP!

Phew, glad I picked up a copy when I did a month or two ago. I was looking to get a new Wii U game after beating 3D World and was looking at Pikmin 3 and a few others. Pikmin 3 was the only one that was actually a little difficult to find, so I figured I better go with it over the others just in case.

They're all pretty similar from a gameplay perspective IMO, so you're not missing much is you skip any.

Pikmin 1 has a 30 day time limit to the game which some people love for the added tension, but I wasn't a huge fan of it.

Pikmin 2 removes the overall time limit, added dungeons to the game, and a second character (to help with multi-tasking). You're also collecting some real world objects in the game (like Carmex and Duracell batteries) which I find pretty charming.

Pikmin 3 obviously looks the best overall and adds a third character for your team, but it seems to have removed the dungeons (haven't beaten it yet, but it seems like they're gone). It adds an overall time limit back in the form of the amount of juice you have left, but you end up getting so much fruit it becomes less of an issue pretty quick. Boss fights seem to be a big improvement overall too (but I haven't played them all the way through yet).

I haven't beaten any of them yet, but have played a lot of each of them. 2 is my personal favorite since I can play it completely at my own pace and take time to explore without any worry of wasting time. It's just the pace I enjoy for this kind of game and it seems to have a ton of content.

3 is still very very good, but it made a few core changes to the gameplay of 1+2 I'm not sure I prefer. You used to be able to guide where you want all your Pikmin to go; a little song would play and they would move around in a circular direction you move the wii remote (or c-stick) in. 3 lets you lock on to stuff and send all of them to attack at once, and there's a dodge roll you can get, but I miss manually guiding of them. I still haven't fully embraced multitasking with the 3 characters yet which seems like a good way of getting a lot done in a short time, but it doesn't seem like a requirement for the most part.

If you want Platinum in the separate missions, you need optimized multitasking of each character (specially for the single-player missions, but even for some of the co-op missions). But the main campaign is quite forgiving.
