DSFix 2.3 taken down after DMCA complaint [Up: Was mistake; being resolved]

Definitely feels like this was more just a general wave of takedowns torwards anything Dark Souls related on dropbox that might be piracy, which, with so many people uploading Dark Souls .exes (due to the Debug Leak), wouldn't be surprising. Perhaps Namco Germany thought it was a crack?

I feel like if this was targeted really at what DSFix is and does, the DMCA notice wouldn't come from their German department.

Durante, you mentioned Dropbox has the counterclaim form option. Is that free, and is there any reason for you not to do it? Have you submitted it yet?

Since it seems very likely this is automated and/or a mistake, there should be no downside to submitting the counterclaim and getting your dropbox back.

The only exception I can think of is if they included any DMCA specifics such as reverse-engineering, and I did not see that mentioned in the claim email.

I refuse to believe this is intentional, unless they've gotten pissy about the Japanese mystery man who helped with the memory address in the new fix.

They have to know that DSFix is why the game has gotten at least 50% of its sales on PC (as reflected by the quality of the DS2 port).

It must be a case of, as others said, an intern taking down any 'mods' for Dark Souls after the debug, and not realising.

I only bought it because everyone was saying that it wasnt garbage with Durantes fix. This was at least a year ago now mind you.

Yes, this sucks, but all I hope for is that people dont overreact too much. We all have had our DSfix for a while now. It's not like they completely erased it off the net. DS2 was a much more competent port, and yelling and screaming at NamcoBandai isn't going to do anything positive now...assuming this isn't a simple mistake.

Yes, Durante's work has shown us all what that game could look like, and how it could run like. It is sad to see that work go seemingly unnoticed/unappreciated by the developers/publishers. Durante is DEFINITELY responsible for sales and spreading positive reviews and sentiment about the PC version specifically over the console versions. However I choose to look at the fact that DS2 was a much more competent port as due to Durante's work. Hopefully they realized they have to do this work themselves, and continue to do so.

His work was not done in vain.

Oh get real. Regardless of the game, they filed a DMCA takedown request for something that contains no code that they hold the copyright on. It's wrong on its face regardless of anything else.

This is fucking insanity.

Also, how fucked up are our copyright laws when corporations can just take down what ever the fuck they want without even owning any part that thing?

So Durante can just counterclaim, correct? I don't see what the huge issue is if he can just do that and have NamcoEU back off.

So then it's a mistake... don't fly off the handle buddy.

Haha, you're the one telling people not to "overreact", and by reading the rest of your post it's obvious you mean not react at all . . . as if anything ever changed because people just took everything lying down and never made noise. Please.

What the hell?

Why would they do this?

This was the reason why so many people bought Dark Souls in the first place D:

He was calm in that text, thought.

Making noise is to ensure they realize filing this claim wasn't right to begin with. It's all well and good for them to be forced to back down because of a counterclaim, but if no one took them to task for it there's no one telling them this just isn't cool to do to begin with.

Did you read about what Durante said about people's responses to this shit on his blog? That's what I mean about overreacting... posting your dismay on GAF is one thing. Don't be stupid and send threatening shit to NamcoBandai is what I'm referring to. You understand now?

Dark Souls 2.0.1 patch notes:

  • Improved stability
  • Now includes Bandai Souls fix (BSFix) developed by our own Burante

lol!

A game publisher would have to be pretty dense to do this intentionally. All the same, I'm going to disable auto updates for the game until this shakes out. Hopefully it was just a dumb mistake.

On metaclassofnil I'm not seeing anything, but all the tweets I've seen have just been people saying they won't support Namco products in the future if this isn't reversed which is the proper course of action to take, and to communicate as such to them.

Genuinely bought Dark Souls on PC because of DSfix.

Already had it on playstation too so was extra cash in Namcos coffers.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

You aren't seeing anything because Durante isn't approving those messages...

Anyway, I didn't mean to not express your irritation about it. However not fully understanding the situation, I think it's a little early to start blasting them for what might be an unintentional mistake.

Assuming it was a mistake, I'm sure Durante will take the steps necessary to defend his work and have them correct their error. With all this Debug shit going on, chances are it's a mistake. If it turns out to be actual bullshit, then we can let NamcoBandai know that we aren't happy with them.

It should be noted that the only reason I even bought Dark Souls was because I knew DSfix would make it playable for me. I would not have purchased it otherwise nor would I have talked my friend into getting it later on.

A thank you letter or a cheque would've been a more appropriate response from Namco.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen a company do. How in the world do you go out and Lynch someone who literally created sales for their broken ass phone and PC port. I would not have bought the game if it weren't for the fix that was put out.

This actually is more upsetting and said such a bad precedent with Namco doing this to someone who really it's only trying to help.

Has any representative from that company ever acknowledge or thank the community including Durante for doing what he's done? I know for a fact, at least 5 people on my close friends list but the game due to the game fixes Durante provided.

I'm glad you decided to make this thread and not keep it to yourself because it is upsetting for me and I don't even have an investment in this. I couldn't imagine how utterly frustrated and disappointed you must feel at this stupid move.

Fuck you Bamco. First the bait and switch and now this. Probably going to sell a 1080p enabled version of Dark Souls for $60.

Fuck you. Just fuck you.

Can we revote on fail of the year? I don't feel like giving Namco any of money going forward if this isn't fixed

If anything they should send him a royalty check.
